* ShortLivedOrganism: Bob-Ombs are said to have incredibly short lifespans, being bombs and all. After all, they were built to blow up, which would kill them shortly after being built. According to Bobby, a Bob-Omb knows that their life is short, so their ultimate goal is to make something of themselves in the limited amount of time that they have.

* CapsLockNumLockMissilesLock: The machine room in Bowser's castle have two buttons next to each other. One unleashes the secret weapon while the other shuts the power off and causes the castle to pummel to the ground. This is already bad enough, but then some idiot thought it would be a good idea to make the signs below them say what the button next to the one it's below does, which runs the risk of someone pushing the wrong button even more.

* FlameSpewerObstacle: Fire jets mounted on rotating circles are among the hazards in the Earth Vellumental Temple. Guts of fire "breathed" out by phoenix-headed statues are also common in the Fire Vellumental Temple, both as stationary and moving hazards. In one section, one pops down from the ceiling to burn away items that Mario tries to use.

* OrigamiGag: It should be no surprise that this game does quite a bit with the origami motif. Many standard Mario enemies appear as origami versions of themselves, while King Olly transforms other characters into intricate shapes like a dog, a beetle, or a fried egg. Meanwhile, Bowser is reduced to a basic rectangle, hopping around like a greeting card.

* ConvientlyPreciseTranslation: To complete the Scorching Sandpaper Desert level, Professor Toad must translate ancient markings to give the player clues on where to find key items and how to complete tasks to progress the game. The translations all are in perfect rhyme and even use wordplay, like conflating “feat” and “feet.” Assuming they were written to rhyme and play on words in their original language, it’s extremely unlikely that translating them into English (or other language selected by the player) would wield the same rhyme schemes and puns.

** Choleric: Bowser, though nicer than usual, he is still the hot-tempered Koopa King trying to get his kingdom back.
** Melancholic: King Olly, pun aside, the cold and serious villain who will do anything to gain an Origami Kingdom, including steal Bowser's minions and . spoiler:Though depending on how one interprets his motivation, he could be either choleric (if his motivation is interpreted as purely petty) or melancholic (if his motivation is not interpreted as purely petty). He is also one of the two titular characters.

Added DiffLines:

* BossAlteringConsequence: Scissors starts out his boss fight by putting on his sheathe so that he can have more fun with the fight instead of just killing Mario instantly (given that everyone is made of paper in this game, Scissors' blades can cause a OneHitKill if they are touched). The player can decide to either destroy the sheathe or let Scissors keep it on until the 2nd phase. If the player spares the sheathe, then the fight is easier, since it gives the player opportunities to freeze him, thus easier to attack. If the player decides to break Scissors' sheathe, not only will the player be less able to freeze him, but his attacks are also much harder to dodge, as he'll sometimes perform fake-outs, making it harder to predict when he'll actually strike.
