* MsFanservice: It's be easier to mention the characters that don't fall into this. Some champions are less extreme, such as Ash wearing a [[SensualSpandex skin tight suit]] under her armor, to Kinessa and Inara [[BareYourMidriff baring their midriffs]], while others are more extreme, such as Betty, Imani, Io, Skye, and Evie rocking AbsoluteCleavage, with Skye always assuming a BoobsAndButtPose and talking in innuendo's, Lian, Saati, Seris, Vora, and Ying's outfits are all decidedly {{stripperiffic}}, among so many more fanservice tropes. Though this is somewhat subverted with Cassie and Furia, as Cassie used to show her midriff with a skintight top, but was later redesigned with a more modest costume, while Furia used to lack pants and had a LeotardOfPower. [[DoubleSubversion Both are still available as unlockable costumes, however]].

taken and adapted from the OW example on the page, but it still feels relvant to the game.

Added DiffLines:

* StatsDissonance: Lots of the attacks are heavily based on context, with so many playable characters and so many permutations of damage numbers and healing numbers makes it very tricky for any one player to work out what loadout, item picks, and talent to go into battle with for any situation they find themselves in. For example, almost any hitscan weapons' damage drops sharply with distance, meaning an attack that would normally be fatal at close range is more survivable at long range. Some characters have abilities that allow them to soak up more damage than expected; Raum can gather souls to act as a secondary health pool, meaning working out exactly how much damage it will take to put him down is hard to do. Part of why the "Burst Meta" has been so resiliant is because players tend to pick characters that have the highest chance of killing a character before they can be healed or protected.

*** Corvus and Moira were both originally part of their games' respective major groups (the Magistrate for Corvus, Overwatch / Blackwatch for Moira) where they were involved in particularly dark work (researching the Abyss for Corvus, general immoral experiments for Moira). Their work was largely unknown to the general public until later notable events (Raum being summoned for Corvus, the aftermath of the Venice Incident for Moira), ultimately led to people learning of them and causing them to leave their groups, turning elsewhere to continue what they believe is right (Corvus forming the Shadow Tribunal and using the Abyss' power to try and save the Realm, Moira continuing her research in the hopes of making a scientific breakthrough). Both additionally appear to lack morals (though Corvus does supposedly still have his), leading to them making huge sacrifices and questionable choices for the sake of their goals and own greater good, and overall being rather arrogant characters. The two also additionally played a part in the reconditioning of specific characters (Terminus for Corvus, Widowmaker for Moira) into living weapons for their groups (the Magistrate for Corvus, Talon for Moira) and continue to monitor them (Corvus controlling Terminus, Moira simply monitoring Widowmaker).

Added DiffLines:

*** Furia and Mercy are both supports with angel-like designs, notably despise and are in conflict with a dark immoral researcher (Corvus and Moira), and are often shipped with the bright green wearing ninja of their respective games (Koga and Genji) by the communities (the former for no apparent reason, the latter due to it being heavily implied in-game).

Before Dribble has a mental breakdown, let me remind him that this is only comparing the two, not saying Paladins is bad for sharing these things in common. Regardless, if the trope needs to be moved to another page such as the trivia or YMMV, then I'll move it over, but the trope itself wasn't listed as one, so I put it here. Also fairly certain this is the most accurate trope for the topic. Not enough time for Follow the Leader to apply, and Serial Numbers Filed Off is a bit too extreme for the general comparasion.

Added DiffLines:

* AlternateCompanyEquivalent: Paladins shares ''a lot'' of similar ideas with Overwatch, both in regards to gameplay and lore. While most first saw the light of day with Overwatch, some did surface in Paladins first. Some notable examples of similarities include.
** Gameplay related:
*** Atlas and Tracer both share an ability that rewinds them a few seconds into the past, moving them to a previous location and restoring their health to the highest amount it was at during the rewinded period.
*** Barik and Torbjörn both serve as TheTurretMaster of their respective games, supporting their team by laying down turrets, though the two do differ by Barik being more focused on defense, while Torbjörn leans towards offense.
*** Bomb King / Dredge and Junkrat share similar primary fires, notably Dredge and Junkrat with their projectiles being affected by gravity and utilizing physics, while Bomb King and Junkrat both possess an ability that lays down a unique bomb that when detonated, launches nearby enemies, and Bomb King / Junkrat themself if close enough, into the air. The two also both have ultimates consisting of taking control of a much larger bomb that explodes either on impact with an enemy, when specifically detonated, or after enough time has passed, all of which result in huge damage to any nearby enemies, though the two do differ in this regard by Junkrat becoming stationary as he uses the ability, while Bomb King himself fittingly becomes the bomb.
*** Cassie and Cassidy / McCree both wield fast firing weapons, can quickly roll in any direction, and possess an alternate fire that can mess with enemies (Cassie by knocking them back, Cassidy by stunning them). Cassie additionally shares the same ultimate as Widowmaker, both allowing their team to see all enemies for a brief period through walls.
*** Drogoz and Pharah both maneuver through the air with rocket thrusters controlled via the space bar, with hovering using a fuel resource that though recharges incredibly quickly, will cause the two to drop out of the air when it runs out. Both also wield rocket launchers, an ability that allows them to launch into the air to more easily begin their flight, and an ability that allows them to fire a barrage of multiple rockets at once, though this is limited to an ultimate ability for Pharah and is expectedly much deadlier.
*** Evie / Inara and Mei share some similar abilities, with Evie and Mei sharing one that briefly encases themselves in ice, temporarily making them immune to damage, with both additionally sharing an ultimate that summons an ice storm which slows down enemies caught, though Mei's can be thrown, while Evie's is summoned around herself. Inara meanwhile, shares a similar summonable wall with Mei, though unlike Mei's, Inara's isn't separated into several pieces.
*** Fernando / Terminus / Azaan and Reinhardt all share some similarities, Fernando being the most notable. Both Fernando and Reinhardt are equipped with large rectangular shields that lock them out of other abilities while active (though Fernando can still dash) yet allows them to protect their allies. Both shields eventually end up destroyed after taking enough damage, after which they can't be used for a short time. Both characters additionally possess a dash that allows them to displace enemies, though Reinhardt's travels further and is overall deadlier. The two additionally are only largely effective in combat within an incredibly short range, but both have an additional ability that allows them to launch a single large fireball to compensate.
**** Terminus shares some of these traits with Reinhardt as well, such as a shield and ranged attack, though they function notably differently from Reinhardt and Fernando's. Terminus does however bear a much stronger resemblance to Reinhardt in regards to their basic attack, both of which being melee swings from a massive melee weapon.
**** Azaan meanwhile also shares a type of shield, though his too functions notably differently from the previously mentioned characters, being more along the lines of Inara / Mei's walls. However, his dash does bear stronger resemblance to Reinhardt's than Fernando's does, being capable of dragging an enemy with him and stunning them if a wall is hit.
*** Grover and Lúcio are both supports that passively heal nearby allies within a radius around themselves, though while this healing is slow, it can be temporarily increased with the usage of an ability. The two additionally both possess an ability that allows them quicker movement around the battlefield (Grover's vine, Lúcio's speed boost and skates), and both additionally have ultimates that temporarily increase the survivability of themselves and nearby allies (Grover by quickly healing those around him, Lúcio by applying a huge shield to those around him).
*** Jenos and Zenyatta both serve as more passive supports that heal their time via marks that can be applied from greater distances than most supports, as well as both possessing an ability that theoretically makes finishing off enemies easier (Void Grip for Jenos, Orb of Discord for Zenyatta).
*** Kinessa and Widowmaker both serve as the first snipers of their respective games, with their rifles additionally firing faster when unscoped. The two are also able to easily reach higher ground with the use of an ability (teleporter for Kinessa, grappling hook for Widowmaker). Strix and Ana also serve as additional snipers in their respective games, with Strix also possessing an alternate fire for closer ranged fights, though Ana differs from the other snipers by being largely focused on support.
*** Koga / Maeve / Vatu / Zhin and Genji all share many similarities. Koga, Maeve, and Vatu all share a dash with Genji that can be aimed anywhere and deals damage to enemies caught in the way, with all additionally going through enemies with the exception of Maeve, who bounces off those hit. Maeve and Vatu additionally share a similar type of basic fire with Genji, throwing out sharp weaponry at a short range. Meanwhile, Koga and Genji can both climb walls and have a type of stance system, while Zhin and Genji can both deflect nearly any attack with their counter.
*** Lian / Octavia and Ashe both wield shorter range rifles with abilities that allow them to effectively deal damage from long distances, Octavia notably wielding a scope similarly to Ashe, with the two additionally both possessing an ability that allows them to leap into the air.
*** Makoa and Roadhog both wield hooks that briefly stun enemies and pull them in for further damage. Both additionally wield short range weapons which the hook helps maximize the potential of, as well as abilities that allow them to survive a bit longer under fire (a shield for Makoa, a heal for Roadhog)
*** Ruckus and D.Va both pilot mechs with a number of similar abilities. The two both utilize fast firing miniguns as their default attack, with a quick burst of rockets available as their alternate fire. The two additionally both possess an ability which allows them to briefly survive under fire (a shield for Ruckus, a projectile absorbing barrier for D.Va), and both have ultimates which can be extremely deadly to anyone nearby, but can also be easily avoided by simply hiding behind a small piece of cover for a short period.
*** Sha Lin and Hanzo both wield bows that only reach full power after being held back for a short time. The two additionally both possess an ability which briefly allows them to fire multiple arrows in quick succession.
*** Skye and Sombra are both capable of turning invisible to sneak into enemy backlines.
*** Torvald and Zarya support their team by applying shields to their allies and themselves. The two also have abilities capable of displacing enemies and potentially resulting in easy kills (Torvald by sending enemies flying off the map, Zarya by locking enemies in place for allies to easily shoot).
*** Viktor and Soldier: 76 both serve as the "Call of Duty" character, wielding assault rifles with an alternate fire allowing for some burst damage, with both additionally being capable of endlessly sprinting, as well as both having ultimates that allow them to deal massive damage to nearly any enemy they can see.
*** Yagorath and Wrecking Ball both shift between a damage focused mode, as well as a more mobile secondary mode that packs their limbs away. The two additionally both have personal defensive abilities they can activate to increase their survivability, as well as abilities that allow them to increase their speed while in their mobile modes, allowing them to deal damage and knock back any enemies caught in their paths.
*** Both games featured a mechanic (though Paladins' has since been removed) that attempts to highlight the most notable play of the match (Top Play in Paladins, Play of the Game in Overwatch), with these highlights often being credited to those who obtained many kills in a short period of time, often leading to these highlights in both games being a character using their ultimate ability in the most standard manner possible and killing a few people, leading to damage characters and a few others with massive damage dealing ultimates (such as Jenos for Paladins or D.Va for Overwatch) dominating these highlights.
** Lore related:
*** The general main storyline of both games is oddly similar. Both begin long ago (a century for Paladins, 30 years for Overwatch) when a huge war is spreading chaos and destruction (Goblin Scourge for Paladins, Omnic Crisis for Overwatch), eventually causing the formation of a specialized group of heroes to stop this threat (the original Paladins and the original Overwatch strike team), which after awhile, they succeed in. After stopping the threat, both groups restructure themselves with new leaders taking charge (the Paladins reforms into the Magistrate, leadership moving from Valera to Karne, while Overwatch simply restructures itself, with Jack Morrison replacing Gabriel Reyes as leader), leading to a new golden age of peace and prosperity under their leadership.
However, new threats begin emerging and threaten the safety of the world once more (the discovery of crystals for Paladins, terrorism and conflict as a result of Talon, Null Sector, and omnic rights movements for Overwatch). While the two groups attempt to resolve the issues, making some progress on the matters, they're ultimately powerless to completely resolve the new growing conflicts, and at some point after a massive explosion (crystal explosion caused by criminal in Paladins, Swiss Overwatch base exploding with Jack and Gabriel inside for Overwatch) the event ultimately leads to members of the original groups (Valera for Paladins, Winston for Overwatch) deciding enough is enough and reforming the groups to fight the new conflict, though this action technically classifies them as breaking the law, ultimately putting them at odds both with the new conflict, as well as old allies. However, the chaos continues to grow (the Abyss and Maw becoming active in Paladins, Talon and Null Sector becoming more aggressive in Overwatch), which the newly reformed groups with a handful of new members fight against in the name of what the groups originally stood for.
*** Both games feature a race that suffers from FantasticRacism as a result of something that occurred during the initial conflicts, for Paladins, this is the ska'drin (hated due to not helping during the Goblin Scourges), while for Overwatch, it's the omnics (hated due to causing the Omnic Crisis).
*** Both games feature an area that was once a regular location, but became an irradiated wasteland due to a massive explosion in the past, with the area now largely only being inhabited by one specific group (the Shattered Desert being destroyed by Yagorath shattering the moon and killing everything around her when she landed in the Realm, with only the Followers of Io continuing to live in the area, while for Overwatch, Australia was destroyed by the country's omnium exploding, ultimately leading to the construction of Junkertown, inhabited almost exclusively by the Junkers).
*** Both games feature an elite unit (Sentinels for Paladins, Blackwatch for Overwatch) within the restructured main groups (the Magistrate and Overwatch), but after a disastrous final mission (never explained for Paladins, Venice Incident for Overwatch), the group was ultimately disbanded, with some members leaving the group altogether (Buck, Kinessa and Tyra for Paladins, Moira and Cassidy / McCree for Overwatch), others staying in the organization (Strix for Paladins, Genji for Overwatch), but the majority of blame fell on the groups' leaders (Viktor and Gabriel).
*** Both games feature a group of monks (Tau-Kor for Paladins, Shambali for Overwatch) that originated from individuals negatively affected by the initial major conflict (those ravaged by the Goblin Scourges for Paladins, outcast omnics from the Omnic Crisis for Overwatch) that both have their roots in a notable individual who ascended to a higher power (Jenos for Paladins, Aurora for Overwatch). They're largely peaceful individuals, but ultimately end up attracting notably unwanted negative attention that ultimately turns violent (House Aico leading to Siege of Ascension Peak for Paladins, Talon and Null Sector leading to Mondatta's assassination and King's Row Uprising for Overwatch).
*** Both games feature a criminal empire with Asian inspired aesthetics (Thousand Hands for Paladins, Shimada Clan for Overwatch) and are also notable for nearly every single revealed member of the groups having left them.
*** Many individual characters have lore notably similar to others from the opposing game as well. Some notable examples include:
*** Androxus and Reaper (Gabriel Reyes) are both former members of the restructured main groups (the Magistrate and Overwatch) that were initially extremely dedicated to ensuring judgement was cast, but after encounters with specific individuals following a notable event (fighting an unnamed Abyssal entity for Androxus, Moira worsening an already present condition after nearly dying in the Swiss Overwatch explosion for Gabriel), the two changed, becoming darker, more sadistic, far edgier looking, and now being opposed to the very groups they once devotedly stood alongside, notably putting them in conflict with their former partners / best friends (Lex for Androxus, Jack for Gabriel) where both sides don't hesitate to attempt and kill each other.
*** Barik and Torbjörn are both short irritable inventors that are responsible for many inventions found throughout their respective games (notable examples include Drogoz's wings and goblin mining suits for Barik, and various types of omnics for Torbjörn). Both additionally end up working alongside a member of their games' respective hated race (Talus a ska'drin for Barik, Bastion an omnic for Torbjörn).
*** Betty La Bomba / Bomb King and Junkrat are all notable unhinged criminals with an obsession for explosives, yet despite being a bit off, they all share an actual knowledge of explosives.
*** Buck and Genji were both once part of their games' respective criminal organization (Thousand Hands for Buck, Shimada Clan for Genji), but ultimately ended up leaving and eventually joined their games' respective elite units within the main groups of the games (the Magistrate's Sentinels for Buck, Overwatch's Blackwatch division for Genji). However, following the disastrous final mission of the group, the two eventually left the organizations altogether and ended up wandering the world, now damaged on a spiritual level (Buck for reasons never explained, Genji for struggling to accept his new mechanical body). The two would eventually encounter a notable monk (Jenos for Buck, Zenyatta for Genji) who helped heal their spiritual wounds and find a new path in life, before the two ultimately ended up joining their respective games' illegal LaResistance group (Resistance for Buck, Winston's reformed Overwatch for Genji).
*** Fernando and Reinhardt are both glory seeking knights that experienced the death of a notable superior before ultimately taking up a position not initially meant for them, though Fernando did this all in secret, while Reinhardt's situation is public knowledge. Additionally, while Fernando still chases glory, Reinhardt learned to prioritize justice and the safety of his friends.
*** Jenos and Zenyatta are both notably unique monks (Jenos having ascended and gained cosmic power, Zenyatta by disagreeing with the other omnic monks) and former members of their respective games' monk group (Tau-Kor and Shambali). The two also have their abilities based on power not perfectly understood by most other characters. The two additionally also helped other characters find their way and heal their spirits after notable events in their past (Buck for Jenos, Genji for Zenyatta).
*** Koga and Genji are both bright green wearing former ninjas of criminal empires (Thousand Hands for Koga, Shimada Clan for Genji), but the two ended up betrayed, attacked, and chased out of their former homes. They returned years later and fought with one of their former family (Zhin for Koga, Hanzo for Genji) with both members ultimatley surviving before Koga and Genji leave and join the illegal LaResistance group (Resistance / New Resistance for Koga, Winston's reformed Overwatch for Genji).
*** Raum and Doomfist are both high ranking members of villainous groups (Abyss for Raum, Talon for Doomfist) that have been referred to as a "scourge" (Scourge of the Realm for Raum, Scourge of Numbani for Doomfist), but during one event where they were causing destruction, they were ultimately defeated by an individual who had exactly what they needed to defeat them (Tiberius having an "anti-evil" sword for Raum, Orisa being designed specifically to combat Doomfist).
*** Skye and Sombra are both extremely untrustworthy individuals with an association with purple and a playful personality. The two specialize in stealth operations and were once part of criminal groups (Thousand Hands for Skye, Los Muertos for Sombra) before eventually finding their way into notable positions in major groups (the Magistrate for Skye, Talon for Sombra), yet the two aren't loyal to the groups in the slightest and only care about abusing their resources to get what they want.
*** Talus and Zenyatta are both members of the oppressed race (ska'drin and omnics) that are at odds with the way others of their species act (the ska'drin hiding away in fear, the omnics spreading their beliefs through religious teachings), with Talus and Zenyatta instead believing the best way to mend their race's reputation is to focus on building personal relationships with others to show them their race isn't worth hating.
*** Terminus and Widowmaker were both initially not directly involved in games' conflicts, but were ultimately taken away by one of the games' groups (Magistrate for Terminus, Talon for Widowmaker) with both being presumed dead, but later resurfaced as agents of these groups, their original personalities largely suppressed, though still somewhat present, replacing them with cold and sadistic killers devoted to carrying out orders.
*** Viktor and Soldier: 76 (Jack Morrison) are both former high ranking members of their respective groups (Magistrate / Sentinels for Viktor, Overwatch for Jack) that were both originally highly respected, but after certain events (Sentinel final mission for Viktor, various reasons for Jack), the two lost a lot of respect. Though the two do differ on what happened after, with Viktor remaining with the Magistrate attempting to regain his position, while Jack became a vigilante working tirelessly to uncover the truth behind Overwatch's collapse.
*** Zhin and Ashe both originally lived in the lap of luxury, but due to events in their lives, ended up robbed of inheriting it, leading both to form their own criminal gangs that ultimately united once conflicting smaller groups, as well as serving as their own makeshift families.
** Other:
*** Ash and Ashe clearly share nearly identical names, being pronounced exactly the same, with the only difference being the additional E for Overwatch's Ashe.
*** Corvus and Echo were both characters that initially only appeared in a cinematic, only to end up becoming highly anticipated characters in-game (though they do differ in regards to Corvus not being initially planned as a playable character, while Echo was largely always planned in some form). Both were also originally anticipated to be released as a specific class, and were in fact originally intended to be released as such (Damage for Corvus, Support for Echo), but ultimately ended up releasing as the exact opposite (Support for Corvus, Damage for Echo).
*** Furia and Tracer were both involved in controversies relating to sexualized content not fitting the character which were both ultimately replaced (Furia originally not wearing pants and was soon given some, while Tracer originally had a victory pose which drew a huge amount of focus towards her butt, which was soon changed for something a bit more fitting Tracer's character).
*** Makoa and Roadhog both share some similarity in their names, notably with Roadhog's real first name being "Mako", just one letter off from Makoa.
*** Both games were accused of being rip-offs (Team Fortress 2 for Overwatch, Overwatch itself for Paladins) which ultimately ended up creating a lot of hate towards the games (TF2 fans hating Overwatch, many non-Overwatch fans hating Paladins, and Paladins fans themselves also hating Overwatch), yet despite the hate, both games ended up surviving alongside their claimed rip-offs and doing decently well for themselves.

My edits are not over the top complaining or exaggeration, but quite the contrary with your edits being over the top defense of the game; honestly, most of your edits often come down to praising the devs for basic things that would be ridiculous if they hadn't done, phrasing issues so that they don't seem to actually be problems, or adding lines pretty much saying "but it's not a big deal, so it's not an issue". As for the specifics of your edit comment, yes, Ash is flanderized, just listen to the lines of skins like Star Sister Seris; makes her out to be a violence loving sadist and completely ignores everything else about her character. As for Tiberius, yes, he was a deus ex machine, as he came out of absolutely nowhere and easily defeated Raum, who everyone else was having issues with. It's even more notable for Tiberius since he's supposed to be this legendary pinnacle of tigron values, yet he was completely unheard of and not referenced in the slightest prior to his random appearance.

* AbortedArc: Many individual character plots such as the revenge of Koga or the redemption of Androxus often end up cut short with no advancement or resolution, but a major aborted story arc would be the iconic Crystal War that ultimately kicked off the game's modern lore. The game's first lore cinematic, ''A Realm Divided'', made it clear the conflict was a huge deal, with most character bios of the time referencing it in some way, often tying the other characters that were absent in the cinematic into the war. However, while this story arc was still present in the background, occasionally being brought up, most characters began to stop being tied to the war while the focus was shifted to fighting Yagorath and the Abyss. The latest lore cinematics, ''A Conflict Reignited'', which showed the aftermath of Yagorath's rampage, instead of resuming the Crystal War, instead wrote Karne out of the plot, didn't even mention the Resistance or Valera, before beginning a brand new conflict related to the racism towards the Ska'drin.
* AbsurdlyHighLevelCap: The maximum level for any character or account is Level 999. Player accounts are there for decoration and all you get for levelling up your account is 3000 gold, which quickly becomes useless. Character mastery levels do give out rewards. Levels 2 and 8 unlock other talents for that character, Level 30 unlocks a character title, and Level 50 nets you the champions' Golden Skin. Some of the older champs, such as Bomb King and Tyra, also have Mastery Poses, Emotes, Cosmic, and Obsidian Skins at varying levels below Level 30.

** ''Paladins'' runs the gamut when it comes to naming the Champions. Some names are plain, such as Cassie, Lex, Vivian, Evie, and Buck. * AntiClimax: This has happened a number of times:
** Siege of Ascension Peak was a lore cinematic and entirely new game mode, and both were introduced to being a huge change to current and future lore, bringing the entirety of the Magistrate and Resistance against each other as Ascension Peak is put under siege; developers around the time of the event (and for some time following it) would also continue to hype it up, making the event out to have huge effects on current and future lore. However, none of that ever happened, and the event was slowly revealed to not be as grand as players expected. The conflict involving the entirety of the Magistrate and Resistance was revealed to actually just have been House Aico against Jenos, with the latter having dealt with the siege without much difficulty by himself as Dragon's Call was occurring. The event, now being a minor background scenario, didn't affect the Realm or any characters really, with the only references to the event following it being an offhand comment by Jenos in the written story to promote End Times, as well as one of Rei's (currently unused in-game)[[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/paladins_gamepedia/images/4/4e/Rei_SP_SpawnChatter_Champion_Jenos.ogg spawn chatter lines]] having her upset with Jenos and telling him he needs to apologize.
** The introduction of Raum, who was hyped up as the most feared and unstoppable of the Abyssal Lords, with his various cards showing him causing chaos and destruction all over the Realm, with it being said he forced the Magistrate and Resistance to drop everything and fight him to stop the carnage. However, not even a month later, Tiberius' teaser was released, which showed Tiberius appearing out of nowhere, toying with Raum, with the battle ending in a tie, with Raum himself becoming forgotten and not being mentioned anywhere in the lore for around two years, where he hadn't been doing much for the past year while Yagorath was on her rampage.
** Speaking of, Yagorath, rather similarly to Raum, Yagorath was also hyped up, though this lasted a lot longer, starting with a warning in Siege of Ascension Peak, followed by Atlas coming back in time from a BadFuture devastated beyond repair by her. Eventually, Yagorath was released and began causing chaos and destruction throughout the Realm, though Atlas had recruited many characters to fight her, notably those on different sides, with numerous more also battling Yagorath in her cards and further trailers. With how powerful Yagorath was shown, being able to defeat other powerful characters such as Karne, Valera, and Io among others, it was largely expected that Yagorath's defeat would be huge, likely involving most of the roster uniting to stop her, maybe even a new in-game event launching to coincide with her defeat. The resolution to this was that nstead, Azaan, a literal DeusExMachina, came out of nowhere and easily defeated Yagorath in a single hit. The following story arcs have not dwelled much on the rampage that had lasted for the past year in-universe, [[WhatHappenedToTheMouse nor the fates of Atlas and Vora]].

** Corvus is constantly painted as this, most notably when he was desperate to defeat the Resistance after believing they had the power of gods on their side, leading to Seris tricking him into making a DealWithTheDevil and summon Raum, and getting him exiled from the Magistrate.
** A meta-example: The developers added a commendations system into the game in Patch 3.02, which allowed players to give commendations to other team mates. However, a glaring design flaw in the UI was that the button to activate the commendations menu looked like a crystal, which was perfectly fine as a design choice thematically, but it was non-distinct and looked like some decoration, rather than a menu prompt. This was fixed in Patch 3.05 to be an awards medal, which is more obvious to players, and when the players' mouse rolls over it, "commendations" would show up, making this menu easier to find, and better understood by players.

* MoneySink: Gold. This is the free currency used to purchase champions, their recolors (except gold), Mastery Poses and Emotes. It's a fairly easy currency to get in the game, being given out in the Event Pass in the free and paid tracks in 2500+ sums, as well as for playing the game normally. Justified in that if it wasn't easy to get, things would be quite hard to unlock. This does come with the problem of a not insignificant amount of the player base having more gold than they know what to do with, especially if said players got the gold via the refund given by purchasing the Founders Pack (when it was available) or the Champions Pack. Even if you buy everything you can with Gold, you could very reasonably still have a million gold left over. The games' initial solution to this problem was to let players purchase character levels (which was near-universally condemned by the player base, see the [[YMMV/{{Paladins}} YMMV page for why]]), and when this functionality was removed in Patch 3.02, it was replaced with the ability to purchase five super-expensive titles for One Million Gold each; those being ''"Has it all", "Live, Laugh, Frag", "Is a bot"'' and ''"The Edgelord".'' The last title is an eye-searingly expensive '''Five Million Gold''', and is aptly called ''The 1%''.

Doing a grammar, natter, complaining, and exaggeration cleanup of the page. Probably the last time I'll edit these pages for a while, considering the unnecessary edit wars that have sprung up. Ash is not flanderised in any sense of the trope, people know her for fighting a lot, so they include that as part of kill-directed lines. Similarly, Tiberius is not a Deus Ex Machina, as his fight with Raum did not end in his defeat, and it didn't feel like a writing cheat either.

However, while this story arc was still present in the background, occcasionally being brought up here and there, most characters began to stop being tied to the war while the focus was shifted to fighting Yagorath and the Abyss.
Player accounts are almost purely decorational and you get pretty much nothing for leveling up your account (except for a small amount of gold, which quickly becomes useless to most players), but character mastery levels do give you rewards. Levels 2 and 8 unlock other talents for that character, level 30 unlocks a character title, and Level 50 nets you the characters' Golden Skin, though at the moment, for some characters this only consists of a Golden Weapon. However, while this story arc was still present in the background, occcasionally occasionally being brought up here and there, up, most characters began to stop being tied to the war while the focus was shifted to fighting Yagorath and the Abyss.
Player accounts are almost purely decorational there for decoration and all you get pretty much nothing for leveling levelling up your account (except for a small amount of is 3000 gold, which quickly becomes useless to most players), but character useless. Character mastery levels do give you out rewards. Levels 2 and 8 unlock other talents for that character, level Level 30 unlocks a character title, and Level 50 nets you the characters' champions' Golden Skin, though at the moment, for some characters this only consists of a Golden Weapon. Skin. Some of the older characters, champs, such as Bomb King, King and Tyra, also have Mastery Poses, Emotes, and Cosmic Cosmic, and Obsidian Skins at varying levels below Level 30, but not all characters have them.30.

* AntiClimax: This has notably happened a number of times.
** The first notable example would be Siege of Ascension Peak. A lore cinematic and entire brand new gamemode were both introduced highlighting how huge of a lore event it was, seemingly bringing the entirety of the Magistrate and Resistance against each other as Ascension Peak is put under siege; developers around the time of the event and for some time following it would also continue to hype it up, making the event out to be a huge one that would have massive effects on the Realm, with those changes showing up throughout future lore. However, none of this ever happened and the event was slowly revealed to not actually be as grand as it was initially made out to be. The conflict involving the entirety of the Magistrate and Resistance was revealed to actually just have been House Aico against Jenos, with the latter having dealt with the siege seemingly without much difficult by himself as Dragon's Call was occurring. As one may expect from the event now being a minor background scenario, the siege didn't affect the Realm or any characters whatsoever, with the only references to the event following it being an offhand comment by Jenos in the written story to promote End Times, as well as one of Rei's [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/paladins_gamepedia/images/4/4e/Rei_SP_SpawnChatter_Champion_Jenos.ogg spawn chatter lines]] seemingly referencing it, with the line just her being upset with Jenos and telling him he needs to apologize.
** The second instance came with the introduction of Raum, who was hyped up as the most feared and unstoppable of the Abyssal Lords, with his various cards showing him causing chaos and destruction all over the Realm, with it being said he forced the Magistrate and Resistance to drop everything and fight him to stop the carnage. However, barely over a month later, Tiberius' teaser was released, which showed Tiberius appearing out of nowhere, toying with Raum in a location that wasn't damaged at all, as well as no one else around attempting to fight Raum alongside Tiberius, with Raum himself becoming forgotten and not being mentioned in the lore whatsoever for around two years, where he seemingly hadn't been doing much in-universe for the past year while Yagorath rampaged.
** Speaking of, Yagorath is the next instance of this. Similarly to Raum, Yagorath was also hyped up, though this lasted a lot longer, starting with a warning in Siege of Ascension Peak, followed by Atlas coming back in time from a BadFuture that had been devastated beyond repair by her, among much other buildup. Eventually, Yagorath was released and began causing chaos and destruction throughout the Realm, though Atlas had recruited many characters to fight her, notably those on different sides, with numerous more also battling Yagorath in her cards and further trailers. With how powerful Yagorath was shown, being able to defeat other powerful characters such as Karne, Valera, and Io among others, it was largely expected that Yagorath's defeat would be huge, likely involving most of the roster uniting to stop her, maybe even a new in-game event launching to coincide with her defeat, or something grand. Unfortunately, none of that happened; instead, Azaan, a DeusExMachina new character that similarly to Tiberius, came out of nowhere and easily defeated Yagorath in a single hit. A new story was quickly moved onto following this, not dwelling much on the rampage that had lasted for the past year in-universe, [[WhatHappenedToTheMouse nor what happened to notable characters such as Atlas and Vora.]]

** Azaan. With Yagorath being nigh-unstoppable and defeating incredibly powerful characters, how is she defeated? By a brand new character Azaan appearing out of absolutely nowhere and one shotting her before vanishing himself and never appearing again. Though to be fair, there was setup for Azaan prior with the introduction of Raum, but this was hardly presented to the point Azaan still felt like he came out of thin air.

** Corvus is constantly painted as this, most notably when he was desperate to defeat the Resistance after believing they had the power of gods on their side, leading to Seris tricking him into making a DealWithTheDevil and summon Raum, getting him exiled from the Magistrate.
** A meta-example: The developers added a commendations system into the game in Patch 3.02, which allowed players to give commendations to other team mates. However, a glaring design flaw in the UI was that the button to activate the commendations menu looked like a crystal, which was non-distinct and looked like some decoration, rather than a menu prompt. This was later fixed in Patch 3.05 to be an icon of a more distinct, and significantly more obvious, awards medal. When the players' mouse rolls over it, "commendations" would show up, making this menu easier to find, and better understood by players.

This does come with the problem of a not insignificant amount of the playerbase having more gold than they know what to do with, especially if said players got the gold via the refund given by purchasing the Founders Pack (when it was available) or the Champions Pack. Even if you buy everything you can with Gold, you could very reasonably still have a million gold left over. The games' initial solution to this problem was to let players purchase character levels (which was near-universally condemned by the playerbase, see the [[YMMV/{{Paladins}} YMMV page for why]]), and when this functionality was removed in Patch 3.02, it was replaced with the ability to purchase five super-expensive titles for One Million Gold each; those being ''"Has it all", "Live, Laugh, Frag", "Is a bot"'' and ''"The Edgelord".'' The last title is an eye-searingly expensive '''Five Million Gold''', and is aptly called ''The 1%''.

It can, yes, but in this case it just comes off as an excuse to gush about the game. As mentioned, Paladins shouldn't be praised for doing things like making loadout cards and voicepacks free, as them being paid is ridiculous, OB 64 will speak to that for cards. Unlocking champions via gold is also extremely grindy, which you yourself admitted. Talents also wouldn't be locked behind mastery levels if the game really did avoid the trope at every turn, and more champions could be free, especially after they removed the champion pack because buying champions that way wasn't working out for them.

* EarlyGameHell: The game attempts to avert this trope at most turns new players would otherwise expect to find a large grind:
** Cards for your loadouts are not paid, and are free to all players, something that was changed after the 2017 [=OB64=] controversy.
** The unlockable talents are gotten in the early levels of character mastery (levels 2 and 8 respectively) meaning only a few matches are needed to actually unlock them.
** Gold has multiple avenues of earning in this game. This can be done by completing a Trial that rewards gold (30k - 50k), Daily quests (400 - 500 gold, depending on difficulty), [[AdReward watching ads]] (100 per ad), Event Pass rewards (50k; one in the free track, one in the paid track), Daily login bonus (200 gold on each day, but stacked 5 times so players get 1000 gold on day 5) and when levelling up your player account (2500 gold), and 300 gold for the first two matches of each game mode played per day (including Training and Ranked), and approximately 150 gold per match you play.
** While new players do have to deal with the limited champion selection, as only 7 out of 50+ champions are actually free, the selection you are given is not a bad selection meta-wise, with a few of those champs deliberately being designed to give free players a fighting chance (Viktor, Seris, Tyra etc.). Not only that, but all champions rotate in and out of a free weekly rotation, so it gives newbies a chance to play as them, albeit for only a week.
** Paying for champions is not entirely reliant on obtaining premium currency, and any champ can be bought with 30,000 or 60,000 gold each, which is about the only part of the grind that will be of any challenge to a new player (although DLC options exist to skip this grind). Voice packs for champions are also part of that price too (something ''VideoGame/{{SMITE}}'', another Hi-rez published game, currently doesn't do), after a ''long'' history of the game trying to sell them separately, and eventually giving up in Patch 3.01.
** Golden Skins are unlocked at Mastery 50, although Justified as the entire point of the skin is to show that you're dedicated enough to reach that level.

You can still list averted tropes on the page. "grind" does not mean "several matches", it means "Lots of playtime". This trope is here because, unlike other multiplayer games, it is notable for subverting the trope in how easy it is to get gold and champions. You do bring up some good points and Information I didn't know, however.

* LevelGrinding: Very prevalent in a number of ways.
** Each individual character has their own level, with the various talents that can alter how they function being locked behind these levels. While the level required to unlock all of a champion's talents are low, it still results in a massive amount of grinding, as this has to be repeated for every individual character. Cosmetics are also available at higher levels, most notable of these being golden skins, which are awarded at level 50. Getting just one golden skin is a huge grind.
** Event Pass (formerly Battle Pass) levels are another source of this, with it often taking many games to advance just a single level, and with each Event Pass only being available for a limited time, this naturally leads to level grinding.
** Every player also has their own individual account level, though this means little to most players. However, each level up does award some gold, which can lead to newer players grinding account levels in order to build up gold so they can purchase characters.

The difference in release date was more than a few months. The Overwatch portion is fine as is and doesn't talk bad about Paladins at all; changing it is just being over defensive.

On the surface, the game lead many prospective players to consider it an ''VideoGame/{{Overwatch}}'' [[FollowTheLeader clone]], a game that came out a few months earlier with a lot of hype surrounding it. However, while the developers did change certain mechanics to appeal to ''Overwatch'' players, the game was simply developed in concurrent development with ''Overwatch'' (heck, the Closed Beta for Paladins came out in ''2015''). Much like the VideoGame/{{Infamous}} and VideoGame/{{Prototype}} situation; both games just happened to be developed and released at the same time. Despite its similarities to both ''VideoGame/{{Overwatch}}'' and ''VideoGame/{{Battleborn}}'', the game holds its own in the HeroShooter genre.

the department trope is just taking up space at this point, especially considering how it doesn't actually apply for any trope. and Did Not Do The Bloody Research is about the language being used incorrectly

%%* DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment: With the amount of characters, it's no surprise several of them are incredibly redundant, as well as other aspects of the game.
%%** Androxus was the game's first explicitly dark character, and also had a bit of a tragic backstory, having been cursed and forced to abandon his duties and become one of the very criminals and supernatural forces he had originally been hunting down. However, this would end up becoming incredibly common in characters as time went on, notably with characters such as Terminus, Vora, Vatu, VII, Zhin, and more.
%%** Originally, the lore only had the Abyss as its group of violent and horrific monsters to serve as the explicit villains that everyone in-universe is opposed to, until a group of alien monsters known as the Darkness was introduced, with the only major differences between the two being the name, a desire to consume, being from space instead of another dimension, and not viewing itself as evil. The groups were so similar in fact, many in the community ended up incredibly confused as to whether the two were separate groups or not.
%%** Mal'Damba has been outright said the whole focus of his character is the mystery about him, what his backstory is, and what's under the mask, which ironically, aside from the fact this angle would be repeated constantly in the future with characters such as VII and Vatu, as well as prior with characters like Evie, isn't even unique, as every character lacks so much information it turns them all into mysteries, though even ignoring that, with the other specifically mentioned characters, makes them all struggle to stand out when they all share the focus of being mysterious.
%%** VII as well, is more or less the exact same character as Vatu, a mysterious assassin with a tragic past that fights for the good of a group of people through violent and deadly means, with the only notable difference between the two being the groups they're associated with.
%%** Vatu himself is also redundant, as he serves as a protector of the ska'drin whose efforts don't appear to end up making a huge difference in regards to their treatment, which is pretty much also the case with Makoa.
&&** Octavia falls into this for both Atlas and Viktor. In regards to the former, Atlas was originally the main uniting force against the Darkness, doing everything in his power to prevent it from winning once more, only for Octavia to suddenly appear and more or less take his position while Atlas vanished without much explanation. Meanwhile, Viktor was originally a well-respected Magistrate commander that deeply cares for his allies, but after an accident where most of the damages fell onto Viktor, causing him to work extra hard to try and regain his position as he continues to fight for the Magistrate and his allies; with Octavia coming along later and having an extremely similar backstory, though the only major difference is that Octavia was physically damaged by losing her leg, as opposed to having her reputation ruined.
%%** The amount of {{Stripperiffic}} designed female characters in the game is immense, with nearly every single female character being designed as such, and those that aren't often end up that way with skins.
%%** Similarly, the amount of over the top arrogant characters is also incredibly high, with it pretty much becoming the norm for new characters to be so stuck up, constantly gloating about themselves, and rarely complimenting anyone beyond the rare backhanded compliment.
%%** Many characters additionally fall into this when it comes to gameplay as well. While most characters do have their niches and unique abilities that can set them apart, many often end up feeling like repeats of past characters, such as Strix feeling like a repeat of Kinessa; Vivian, Tyra, and Octavia feeling like Viktor; Corvus feeling Jenos; Vatu feeling like Maeve; Saati feeling like Androxus and Lex; Betty La Bomba feeling like Dredge; Lillith feeling like Mal'Damba, and so on.

* DidNotDoTheBloodyResearch:
** The "Curses!" voice line for Lex, and the "Oops!" voice line for Clockwork Torvald has both of them exclaiming "Bollocks!", which is a very mild curse word in England.
** Embarssingly happens regarding the game's own lore, with the Corrupted and Frozen Moon skins for Io notably potraying the Darkness completely inaccurately, most notably by claiming it to be evil, despite developers in the past making it very clear the Darkness doesn't consider itself evil.
** Has also happened several other times, such as Mal'Damba being claimed to not be black, despite previous game developers stating he is indeed intended to be black.

** Koga's betrayal was treated as a huge deal when it was introduced, with Koga going so far as to attempt and murder Zhin, yet after many years of the plotline going completely ignored, the ''A Conflict Reignited'' cinematic showed the two working together without issue, despite having never addressed the two making up.

to:

** Koga's betrayal was treated New characters generally coming out of nowhere and having never been referenced at all prior to their introduction, which is more apparent with certain characters that are mentioned as being big deals in-universe, such as Vatu and Azaan, who are both part of Realm-wide legends.
** Speaking of Azaan,
as a huge deal when it was introduced, Pyre entity tasked with Koga going so far keeping the Realm free from the Abyss' influence, it's never explained why he never did anything for certain Abyssal events such as Dredge's awakening, as well as why it took him over a year to attempt show up and murder Zhin, yet after many years of finally stop Raum.
** Crystals were a major discovery in
the plotline going completely ignored, Realm, ultimately sparking the Crystal War shortly following said discovery, however, despite the fact they're stated to be a new discovery in the ''A Conflict Reignited'' cinematic showed Realm Divided'' cinematic, Karne can be seen seemingly wielding magic crystals earlier in the two working together without issue, despite having never addressed the two making up.same video a century prior to their discovery.

** Additionally, the Outer Tribunal had been established as being a group of merciless judges that battle supernatural monsters and horrifying threats to the Realm, yet for some reason, when VII released, these traits were treated as though VII was unique in these regards.

** Sarah attached the lock of Abby's hair she received from Corvus to her own following Abby being taken away, however, it was said she did this with the usage of Pyre magic, yet Sarah can be seen with the hair already attached prior to her even entering the Pyre church and becoming Furia.
** Kinessa used to wield a more sci-fi themed weapon when the game's setting was intended as more advanced, with this weapon being changed to a more setting fitting one later on. However, her old weapon randomly reappeared in one of Saati's cards with no explanation years later.
** Several members of the Resistance don't make much sense being part of the group. This notably includes Grover and Makoa, who intend to protect nature and the Temple Isles from the chaos of the Crystal War, making little sense for them to join either side. Moji has additionally been seen with the Resistance, despite this similarly making little sense, though she's since been mentioned as not being part of the group, yet her appearance with the group in Dark Tides was never explicitly deconfirmed. On top of these individuals, Evie, Koga, and Buck had joined the group, yet none of them seem to have much reason to, as they've never been shown with a notable opinion on crystals or a negative opinion of the Magistrate. Buck is additionally confusing due to Jenos fighting alongside the group against the Darkness, yet specifically isn't a member, meaning the possibility Buck joined to fight the Darkness unlikely.
** Additionally, Siege of Ascension Peak was originally presented as a big battle between the Magistrate and Resistance, but has since been changed to largely just being House Aico against Jenos, leading to confusion on how and why Jenos began fighting alongside the Resistance.

** On the topic of the Magistrate, it's been established Karne's main focus is ensuring peace. While Lex has been shown and mentioned to be going after Androxus, many other problematic characters are seemingly allowed to roam freely and engage in harmful activities, such as Bomb King, Drogoz, Maeve, Kinessa, Saati, and notably the Thousand Hands Guild.

to:

** On the topic of the Magistrate, it's been established Karne's main focus is ensuring peace. While Lex has been shown and mentioned to be going after Androxus, as well as Koga and Caspian being briefly mentioned as being wanted, many other problematic characters are seemingly allowed to roam freely and engage in harmful activities, such as Bomb King, Betty La Bomba, Drogoz, Maeve, Kinessa, Saati, and notably the Thousand Hands Guild.Guild.
** The ''A Conflict Reignited'' cinematic introduces several. The first of which relates to Karne. He's been said to be very stubborn (similarly to Valera), and has spent the past century ruling the Magistrate and working hard to keep the Realm peaceful, yet the cinematic shows Karne believing he had failed for reasons never explained, leading to him stepping down as Grand Magister, which comes off as rather out of character. Additionally, he decides to give the Magistrate to House Aico, who's been stated to not be very loyal to the Magistrate and often acts out of their own self interest, a fact Karne is well aware of due to events such as Siege of Ascension Peak, further making the decision extremely odd that Karne would trust the Magistrate to someone that he knows he shouldn't trust, on top of people that go against his goals of peace by resorting to violence when they don't get what they want as demonstrated by Siege of Ascension Peak.
** Koga's betrayal is a more confusing one. Koga's own lore makes it clear he only wants revenge against the one that spread lies about him and led to his exile from the Thousand Hands, which he doesn't believe to be Zhin. Despite this, when Koga eventually returned to the guild, he attempted to murder Zhin for some reason. However after many years of the plotline going completely ignored, the ''A Conflict Reignited'' cinematic showed the two working together without issue, despite having never addressed the two making up.
** The ''A Conflict Reignited'' cinematic also shows the continued discrimination of the ska'drin, yet the cinematic doesn't say anything about their discrimination has changed beyond House Aico now being in charge, leading one to wonder why exactly a resistance opposed to this discrimination randomly formed now after at least a century of this discrimination.

** Fernando launched as a flamboyant CasanovaWannabe, only for years later, despite everything so far pointing to him being a straight enjoyer of women, he ended up being revealed as gay. Though this was explained after the fact, even the developers admitted they didn't do the best job at hinting at this change.
** Jenos' bio originally said he returned for "some arcane purpose that only he understands", yet it was eventually revealed he returned to stop the Darkness from destroying the Realm, a goal that doesn't appear very complicated.

Added DiffLines:

** It was originally said that a future version of Vora is the character that tore off Atlas' arm in the future he originates, however it was later stated this version of Vora wasn't the same individual as the Vora controlled in-game, despite it also being made clear prior to this that Vora is her actual name and not a title, leading to this other character being referred to as Vora extremely odd.
