* HateSink: Jeremy Blaire puts a human face to the utterly inhumane Murkoff Corporation, and as such he's the closest the game really has to a BigBad. In addition to being a slimy, arrogant corporate suit, he goes out of his way to KickTheDog in every single scene he's in. He doesn't even have the "insanity" excuse that everyone else has; he's just a repulsive bastard, through and through.

* ExtremelyShortTimespan: The entire game takes place over a single night - the [=DLC=] expands on this and reveals that it occur over ''a period of less than twelve hours.'' If you look at the clock in the room where you obtain the ''Variant Postmortem'' document, you can see it is 03:53am. The clock in the very first room you arrive in says 9:20pm. By the time you [[spoiler:die]], it's presumably just gone four am. You're only in the Asylum, as Miles at least, ''for just under seven hours!''

An expansion pack, "Whistleblower", was released on April 6, 2014. It follows Waylon Park, the inside source that tells Miles about Mount Massive, and takes place during the takeover of the asylum and after the events of the main game. Like Upshur, Park isn't physically equipped to handle the inmates and must run and hide while using a camcorder to see in the dark.

Independent journalist Miles Upshur breaks into [[BedlamHouse Mount Massive Asylum for the Criminally Insane]], which had been recently reopened by the transnational Murkoff Corporation, after receiving information from an inside source. Expecting a controversial scoop, Miles finds himself in a hell he could never imagine.

''Outlast'' is a SurvivalHorror game released for UsefulNotes/{{Steam}} on September 4, 2013 with a version for the UsefulNotes/PlayStation4 released on February 5, 2014, and an UsefulNotes/XboxOne version released on June 26, 2014. You control a NonActionGuy with no combat options but the ability to {{parkour}} his way over obstacles, hide in lockers and under beds, and lose pursuers amongst the twisted hallways of the facility. As an added mechanic, Miles has a camcorder with a NightVisionGoggles mode, which is useful in the asylum's many pitch-black sections but requires batteries to operate.

* MountaintopHealthcare: The game is set in the ''Mount'' Massive Asylum, and though you don't get much of an external view of the surrounding area, documents confirm that this is indeed a mountain. Hell Is That Noise is only for sounds that are noted in-universe to be terrible or scary.

* HellIsThatNoise:
** The creaks, bumps, and other echoed sounds that come from the long and winding corridors of the asylum. Most of them are purely ambient, but others indicate something sinister is coming. The chilling fact is you can't discern which until it's on your heels.
** Chris Walker's chains as he stalks you.
** Trager occasionally opening and closing his bone shears as he stalks Miles.

* HellIsThatNoise:
** The sound of Manera's buzzsaw revving. Which he does a ''lot''.
** Manera's two lines when he sees you. He either says "Dinner Bells!" or "Feed me! Feed me! Feed me! Feed me! FEED ME!" in progressively louder and higher tones.
** "''Darling! Whore!''"
** Gluskin's singing, particularly when you have to go back ''just'' after having escaped him.
