The game is a multiplayer arena brawler with similarities to games such as ''VideoGame/NarutoToBorutoShinobiStriker'', and ''VideoGame/DissidiaFinalFantasy'' (the co-producer of the latter is also part of the game's staff), with a focus on [[LeParkour parkour]] and a variety of different weapon and ability options. The latter is enabled by "ninja gum" -- scientifically-engineered chewing gum designed to allow people to use various ninja skills (including bubblegum that can be used as a weapon or to traverse the map, and [[HiddenInPlainSight disguising yourself as inanimate objects to ambush opponents]]).

''Ninjala'' was first unveiled during E3 2018, appearing in a montage of third-party titles during the Nintendo Direct, and accompanied by a full trailer (set to music by Music/BabyMetal) and a multiplayer demo on the convention floor. It was subsequently delayed to 2020, re-appearing in a March 2020 Nintendo Direct Mini with new gameplay footage, a release date, and the announcement that the game would be free-to-play. This was followed soon afterward by a new [[https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCktV7qvOqmyYrNRKOI2mgoQ CGI short]], which began to establish aspects of the game's lore and main characters.

When an opponent is trapped in a ninja gum shot and then [=KOd=], the player who dealt the killing blow scores an IPPON, which is worth more points than a standard KO; in addition, an attack that would normally become an IPPON deals a lot more damage than regular attacks, even if the target isn't defeated.

''Ninjala'' is a free-to-play online video game created by [=GungHo=] Online Entertainment and scheduled for release on the UsefulNotes/NintendoSwitch on May 27, 2020. The game is an action game where up to eight players can compete in ninja matches.

The game focuses on the World Ninja Association, who have invented a special new bubble gum that allows humans with ninja DNA to perform ninjutsu. By using bubble gum, players in the game can generate melee weapons in varying size. Smaller weapons aren't as powerful but perform faster. Larger weapons take longer to use but are more powerful. By using bubble gum, players can also trap opponents in goo, or make use of parkour techniques to navigate the map.

The game was teased in E3 2018 with only its name revealed, planned for a 2019 release before it got delayed. During a Nintendo Direct on March 26, 2020, it was announced as a free-to-play title. It will be released on May 27th, 2020. A mini-series detailing the game's backstory was released on Youtube, with can be watched [[https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCktV7qvOqmyYrNRKOI2mgoQ here]].
