Added DiffLines:

* BondVillainStupidity: In both Scorpion and Sub-Zero's endings, Quan Chi just cannot resist gloating with an enemy only knocked out nearby and it always goes badly for him. In Sub-Zero's, the sorceror says aloud that he never had any intent of fulfilling his ending of the deal with Scorpion, causing the ninja spectre to kill him. In Scorpion's, Quan Chi outright tells Scorpion that it was he, and not Sub-Zero who killed Hanzo's family and clan and while he quickly sends Scorpion back to the Netherrealm, Hanzo manages to drag Quan Chi with him.

Added DiffLines:

* DidYouJustScamCthulhu: As shown in his ending, Quan Chi gave Shinnok a worthless duplicate of his [[ArtifactOfDoom magical amulet]] while keeping the original for himself and using it to supplant Shinnok immediately after. He even fooled Raiden with it. Quan Chi managed to hold on to said real amulet from ''Deadly Alliance'' all the way up to ''Armageddon'' too so that was some impressive scamming.
-->'''Quan Chi:''' I am in possession of your once sacred amulet! Years ago I delivered to you an exact duplicate, while I retained the original. I even fooled Raiden!

Added DiffLines:

* DraggedOffToHell: Done in Scorpion's ending. Quan Chi, having admitted to murdering Scorpion's family and ninja clan, magically sends Scorpion back to the Netherrealm...only for Scorpion to grab and take Quan Chi to the depths with him, much to Quan's horror.

In order to test its "virgin" 3D engine, Midway released a "test game", ''VideoGame/WarGods'', which was panned by critics and allowed Midway to learn from its mistakes before finalizing ''[=MK4=]''. Midway changed the engine to allow only two slow movements on the z-axis (the side steps, which only worked to dodge beam-attacks), which made ''[=MK4=]'' similar to previous games (and thus helped it to avoid hitting the PolygonCeiling). ''[=MK4=]'' also introduced the weapon fighting system to the franchise.

* PolygonCeiling: A weird case. Even though it's fully 3D, the gameplay is not greatly altered from the previous games (with only one limited way to move on the z-axis), making it very faithful to the original 2D games. * AcidAttack: Reptile retains his signature acid spit from previous game, but now the acid is affected by gravity; this isn't a problem, because the range of the spit is still wide.

* AntiFrustrationFeatures: The game introduces a Maximum Damage cap regarding combos. In previous games, some characters (like with Kitana and Scorpion in ''VideoGame/MortalKombat2'' or with Sub-Zero and Noob Saibot in ''[[VideoGame/MortalKombat3 Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3]]'') were capable of 100% combos, which would effectively guarantee a victory if pulled off, and some of them (''especially'' Noob Saibot's) were rather easy to perform with practice. ''Mortal Kombat 4'' instead forcibly makes both players backflip away from each other if 20% of an opponent's health is drained in a single combo.
* BattleBoomerang: Tanya uses one as her weapon during fights. It only returns to her when thrown if it connects to the opponent.
* BigHeadMode: This is one of the Kombat Kodes. For some reason, it also affects the skeleton hands that Shinnok summons in his fatalities. In one of them, they get ''too big to fit through the portal''.

* DropTheHammer: Although Raiden usually uses a staff for a weapon, in this game he uses a hammer, then leaves it on top of a tall tower, where anyone who wants to can use it.

* GuiltBasedGaming: The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ts-i3D8GNuw continue screen]] has your character falling down a pit. In the arcade version, if you don't insert quarters to continue, they get impaled by spikes at the bottom of the pit; five seconds of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EB_GI7ATE-w this music]] are more than enough to make you pop in another quarter. In the home console versions, the countdown will be based on how many continues you have left (usually three at most, but a secret menu can raise the number to up to nine), motivating you to press Start ASAP to save your character if you have too few continues (or even just one) left.

* HomeStage: In addition to bringing back Goro's Lair, the game also introduces Reptile's Lair.
* IgnoredEpiphany: Scorpion discovers that the elder Sub-Zero (whom he killed in the first game) was never involved in his family's deaths, that he had been framed, and that Scorpion's thurst for vengeance were uncalled for. That would mean Scorpion would not make any more poor decisions based on revenge, right? No, as Scorpion instead transfers his hate towards the ''actual'' culprit: Quan Chi. Scorpion's vengance would make him spend most of [[VideoGame/MortalKombatDeadlyAlliance the following game]] torturing Quan Chi until he escaped from the Netherrealm and formed the deadly alliance with Shang Tsung, [[UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom basically kickstarting the events of that game]].
* KukrisAreCool: Kai uses the "Gurkha Knife" or kukri as his weapon of choice.
* LaserBlade: In ''Gold'', Cyrax has the [[Franchise/StarWars "Sabre of Light"]]. Later on it's given the name of "Pulse Blade" in ''VideoGame/MortalKombatDeadlyAlliance''.
* LoveRuinsTheRealm: This is the reason why [[Franchise/MortalKombat Liu Kang]] refuses to become Edenia's king, alongside Kitana, in his ending.
* MiniBoss: Goro serves this role in the home console versions of the game, right before Shinnok who's the FinalBoss. In the arcade version, it was Quan Chi. It made sense from a storyline perspective, but he was a selectable character from the very start already.
* MovesetClone: This is actually the first game in the series to defy this trope, due to fan backlash regarding clones in the previous games. The only straight example is Noob Saibot, who still borrows some moves and Fatalities from various characters (most notably from Reiko).

* ObviousBeta: The initial arcade release wasn't technically supposed to get out to the public because it lacked among other things, endings, the Kombo Limiter system, as well as certain characters and Fatalities.

The console versions add Goro and Noob Saibot, both of whom are playable by selecting Shinnok or Reiko respectively while using the Hidden option. Reception stuff don't belong in a work's description (and the game obviously wasn't a Franchise Killer, as a spinoff was released two years later and was followed by a new mainline installment in 2002). Did other fixes — this page feels like a relic of old-era TV Tropes, and many of the refined standards of the wiki have yet to be reflected here

The game performed well in arcades and was deemed a success, although it reached nowhere near the levels of success of its predecessors and it was clear that the glory days of ''Mortal Kombat'' were over: people were starting to lose interest in the series due to overexposure and the series' "cool-factor" having worn off. In hindsight it tends to be seen as the weakest entry in the series, and has gotten a (not quite deserved) reputation as the series' FranchiseKiller.

** In the original game old characters were last-minute changed for new ones. Kitana (returning in ''Gold'') in favor of Tanya, Noob Saibot (although he's still playable via a code) in favor of Reiko and Kano in favor of Jarek. This explains why these new characters have moves/fatalities similar to the older ones, particularly noticeable in the case of Jarek, whose second fatality is shooting an eye-beam when he doesn't have a robotic eye like Kano does (and he shoots it from ''both eyes'').
*** Kitana is playable in the Nintendo 64 version via Game Shark code; even then, she's clearly a recolor of Tanya with a different face model. Also, Noob Saibot was completed for the home releases and made into a secret character.
** There was also a stage called Skull.
** ''Gold'' had an unreleased character called [[http://mortalkombat.wikia.com/wiki/Belokk Belokk.]]
** In ''Gold'', via Kombat Kode, it's possible to play in the Stage Selection arena, which is called "Ladder?".
