* Combat. ''Beta'' contains a number of different AI-controlled monsters which will attack you on sight, forcing you to run or fight. Once defeated, they drop various valuable resources, as well as experience orbs which the player can collect and level up, becoming stronger. Generally the AI is poor, and direct unmodded combat is rather limited, consisting of either using a sword or a bow; however, [[CriticalHit critical hits]] and over-charged bow shots are possible, and there are plans to expand combat further. The difficulty can be adjusted to make monsters more or less powerful. The [[EasierThanEasy "peaceful"]] setting removes monsters altogether. Conversely, the [[HarderThanHard "hardcore"]] setting locks your world onto the hardest difficulty and doesn't let you respawn, so you have to start a new world if you die.

* Construction. This is the part of the game that has the most in common with ''Classic,'' described above. You take the stone and other materials you get from mining, and build houses, towers, or any other structure that take your fancy. Given that Minecraft's environment is cube based, this forces a bit of creativity for players looking to build something other than "giant cube #258". However, due to the large number of different blocks, and the fact that players can dye wool blocks a variety of colorful hues, players can get very creative indeed.
* Engineering. Minecraft has a substance called "redstone". Redstone dust, when placed by the player, manifests as circuit-line trails that are able to carry signals. The redstone system is essentially an emulation of RealLife non-integrated electronic circuits, which you can use to control the behaviour of certain blocks and items in the world. For example, a player can wire a pressure-activated plate to trigger a locked door to open, or can wire an on/off switch to a floodgate that allows them to turn a waterfall on and off like a light.
* Exploration. Minecraft's world, and its various landscape and "biomes", are procedurally generated as the players ventures into unexplored areas. Thus, the map is, for all practical purposes, infinite (though it's often said that, due to technical limitations, the engine would crap out at around 8 times the surface area of Earth). Additionally, players are eventually able to craft their own PortalNetwork of {{Cool Gate}}s, (apparently inspired by the Wheel of Time series) which allow players to travel throughout the world at eight times the normal rate, [[HyperspaceIsAScaryPlace if you don't mind the risks]]. Of course, some people build portals just to explore [[FireAndBrimstoneHell the "Nether"]], which contains several unique resources like netherrack, a strange mineral that can burn forever, and glowstone, which is a useful light source.

It's worth noting that they deal the most damage per hit out of any monster (aside from creepers), and one blow can easily take off a quarter of your maximum health on easy. ** [[http://twitter.com/#!/notch/status/39722654491611136 1.8 adds introduces Hunger]]. Unlike [[WizardNeedsFoodBadly most games that use a Hunger Meter]] which influences hunger meter]], Minecraft's meter doesn't drain at a fixed rate. Instead, it uses a complicated system where different activities burn calories at a different rate. You become a little hungrier every time you receive damage, break a block, or move around. A running jump is equivalent to two regular jumps, or running four meters, or walking forty meters, or sneaking forty-five meters, or breaking sixteen blocks. When you're full, health regeneration and dashing.regenerates at a rate of half a heart every four seconds. If the hunger meter drops below 30%, you can no longer run. If it reaches 0%, it adversely affects your health, to a different extent depending upon the difficulty.

** Beta. The /infdev/ update that first allowed the spawning of creatures would often create groups of 5 or 7 monsters ''right next to another group of 5 or 7... during all hours of the daylight!'' Simply going outside for wood was difficult. Fortunately it has been fixed.
** Minecraft is just a hard game in general. Spiders climb walls and move faster than you and can jump at you over and over again once in attack range. Skeletons attack you with an endless supply of arrows instead of melee, negating your one big advantage over other mobs, and even if you have your own bow and arrows, skeletons will strafe and jump unpredictably while still firing at you with considerable accuracy. Creepers formerly made absolutely no sound before the iconic "SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS-", can be exposed to sunlight without issue, and ''explode'' when they get within striking distance, which can easily destroy obstacles like your house's walls. Even if you manage to deal with all of that, ''at the same time'', chances are the zombies that you were momentarily ignoring are about to kill you instead, assuming you didn't already fall off a steep cliff and/or into a pool of lava because you were too focused on what you were running from and not on where you were running to. The Nether is no easier, where you have to deal with the gigantic Ghasts, which often fly out of range of your arrows while shooting fireballs at you that tear up the ground, making it harder to maneuver. The Nether's only other mob is the Zombie Pigmen, who are initially peaceful, but will rush you and slice you to pieces even in diamond armor should you attack them. There's a reason people are sorely tempted to switch to [[MercyMode Peaceful difficulty]] when they want to focus on [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin mining and crafting, which is a pretty big part of the game]].

** The upcoming realm known only as "The End." The sky is grey tv-style static, it has a featureless gray, dull green ambience to it, the world is nothing but floating islands in a black void, giant obsidian-like pillars dot the otherwise featureless landscape, and giant black dragons fly above. It's also [[CaptainObvious home to Endermen]]. And once you enter the Ender, ''you cannot leave without dying.''
