Perhaps IIs biggest legacy is the "Ancient Cave" sidequest, a roguelike with recycled assets and enemies. It starts you off at Lv. 1 and with only the barest of gear; items found in the rare blue chests remain in your inventory when you die, allowing you to plunge deeper into the cave next time. The Ancient Cave is a standalone game which has recently been inserted into ROMhacks of other popular [=RPGs=], from VideoGame/SecretOfMana, VideoGame/FinalFantasyV and VI, to and even VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaBreathOfTheWild. It is not be confused with a "randomizer" mod, which uses the same campaign as the main game but changes the content, such as item placements or the dungeon order. The version breaks up the action with Bizarrchitecture towns and shuffles all of the sprites around (e.g. party members, save points, [=ATMs=], and NPCs); the result is even-more gloriously nonsensical.

Lufia II threw out the random encounters from the first game, replacing them with PreexistingEncounters. Said monsters only move in response to the footsteps of the player, adding an element of strategy a la VideoGame/Mother: ambush them from the back and they'll fall more easily, but be sure to watch your own flank. Combat is also switched up for the sequel: As characters take damage, their IP increases, allowing them to activate Limit Breaks built into their gear. As if that weren't enough, the player can recruit a series of Mons who evolve into formidable assist characters (acting as an AI-controlled fifth party member).

Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals is the second in the VideoGame/Lufia series and the prequel to VideoGame/LufiaAndTheFortressOfDoom. The conclusion to this game was known by anyone who had played at least ten minutes of the first one, but the whole story had more to tell. Legendary swordsman and progenitor of heroes Maxim is a simple monster hunter at the outset, eking out a meager wage with his companion Tia. On a trip to the caves near the town, Maxim encounters a mysterious woman named Iris, who hints at his great destiny. With Tia tagging along behind him, Maxim embarks on a quest to stop the Sinistrals, forming his soon-to-be-legendary party (Guy, Selan, Artea) along the way. Tia is just the first of several heretofore-unknown allies, including the happy warrior Dekar and Dr. Lexis Shaia of the recurring Shaia clan of inventors.

These story and gameplay elements made Rise of the Sinistrals the agreed-upon high point of the series, though not enough to rescue it from obscurity. However, it led to a brief revival in 2010 with VideoGame/LufiaCurseOfTheSinistrals, a loose remake of this game which was redesigned as an ActionRPG.

This game is most-remembered introducing puzzle dungeons to the series, similar to those seen in the Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda games. With a series of tools (and liberal usage of the Reset spell) at the player's disposal, Lufia II's dungeons are a good deal more memorable than the former's dungeon crawls.

Combat is also switched up for the sequel; as characters take damage, their IP increases, allowing them to activate Limit Breaks built into their gear. As if that weren't enough, the player can recruit a series of Mons to evolve into formidable assist characters (acting as an AI-controlled fifth party member).

This game is most-remembered introduced puzzle dungeons to the series, similar to those seen in the Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda games. With a series of tools (and liberal usage of the Reset spell) at the player's disposal, Lufia II's dungeons are a good deal more memorable than the former's dungeon crawls.

Legendary swordsman and progenitor of heroes Maxim is but a simple monster hunter at the outset, eking out a meager wage with his companion Tia.

With Tia tagging along behind him, Maxim learns of the Sinistrals, four mighty gods who seek to take over the world. Now on a quest to stop them, Maxim gradually forms his soon-to-be-legendary party (Guy, Selan, Artea) along with some heretofore unmentioned allies, including BloodKnight Dekar and Dr. Lexis Shaia (of the recurring Shaia clan of mad scientists).

Lufia II threw out the random encounters from the first game, replacing them with monsters you could see on the map. Said monsters react to the movement of the player, adding an element of strategy (a la VideoGame/EarthBound), and can even be frozen with use of a tool. More notably, the game also introduced puzzle dungeons to the series, similar to those seen in the Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda games. With a series of tools (and liberal usage of the Reset spell) at the player's disposal, Lufia II's dungeons are a good deal more memorable than the former's dungeon crawls. Combat is also switched up for the sequel; as characters take damage, their IP increases, allowing them to activate Limit Breaks built into their gear. As if that weren't enough, the player can collect a series of Mons to raise into formidable assist characters (acting as an AI-controlled fifth party member). These additions would help make Rise of the Sinistrals the agreed-upon high point of the series even today, though not enough to rescue the franchise from obscurity. However, the series' brief revival in 2010, VideoGame/LufiaCurseOfTheSinistrals, was a loose remake of this game, albeit redesigned as an Action RPG.
