** "Seer" and "Guardian" medals were retired due to bad player behavior (See WhyWeCantHaveNiceThings below).behavior.

* WhyWeCantHaveNiceThings:
** The "Seer" medal that used to be awarded for having 10/50/200/500/5000 portal submissions approved. The medal attracted huge amount of poor quality portal submissions which overwhelmed Niantic's portal review staff. Due to the huge backlog, portal submissions were temporarily disabled in 2015 until Operation Portal Recon went live in 2017. Portal submitted after the disablement period no longer counted toward the medal. Some examples of poor quality portal submissions were documented in a [[https://plus.google.com/communities/107249931769628353735 Google+ community]].
*** Reverted, to a certain extent, with the advent of Niantic Wayfarer - formerly known as Operation Portal Recon - and the "Recon" medal (which counts how many times a given reviewer's opinion of a candidate is in agreement with other reviewers who've seen the same candidate). However, that hasn't stopped people from submitting low-quality candidates... which, with the closure of Google+, [[https://www.reddit.com/r/IngressPortalCoal/ are now chronicled on Reddit]].
** The "Guardian" medal that used to be awarded for holding a portal for 3/10/20/90/150 consecutive days. For years, this attracted many griefers known as "Guardian Hunters" who used illegal hacks, scraping tools, and/or location spoofing tools to track and find portals that were close to 90 or 150 days old, and then destroying them. Due to such player behaviors and the ensuing drama, the medal was retired on 2018-04-02. Players who had longest portal held time of 80+ and 140+ days (10 days before the milestone) were retroactively awarded Platinum and Black medal tiers.
** Similarly, you can't have single letters in the icons for multi-part missions any more, because players would intentionally do the mission segments out of order so that the icons would spell something obscene or offensive.

** Abandoned portal clusters turned into Machina infestations can become this if you're willing to spend the Dispersers (and Cubes) to clear them out. You can either reclaim them for extra AP or leave them neutralized and leave one Machina portal active so [[TheVirus they can be reinfected]] and you can do it again.

Added DiffLines:

* TheVirus: Machina portals spread like this. The first one is spontaneously claimed out of nowhere, a portal untouched for a while. But after that, periodically, the Machina portal links out to another neutral portal within an area, claims it for the Machina, and levels up. Now both can do the exact same thing later, and the leveled-up portal has a greater linking radius to do the same. Letting a single Level 1 Machina portal go unchecked can turn an abandoned area into an utter infestation of high-level Machinas in a matter of days.

Added DiffLines:

* GlassCannon: Machina portals are noted as somewhat frailer than regular player-made portals of the same level, but ''much'' more responsive when it comes to counter-attacks. Clearing them out is relatively fast, but you ''will'' need to consume Power Cubes to make up for the sheer thunderstorm of counter-zaps you'll get.

* MyRulesAreNotYourRules: Player portals have a limited amount of links towards other portals. Machina portals, however, [[https://www.reddit.com/r/Ingress/comments/150oiyp/28_links_from_machina/ can have as many links as they want]]. Rather than a gameplay-related excuse, it's explicitly noted as one of the ways the Machina violates all known rules of how XM and portals work.

* TheSpook: The Machina, the game's "third" faction. Even knowing its ''name'' took months, being listed as "UNKNOWN" when first introduced. Other than that, neither of the factions seems to have a clue about the entity other than its modus operandi of taking over portals like a cancer, and its apparent hostility.

* PinataEnemy: To make up for the fact Machina portals barely give anything when hacked, destroying them drops a whole bunch of items of the portal's original level before attack. And due to their growth speed, that level is ''usually'' 8.

More specific tropes

* ColorCodedForYourConvenience:
** The two factions in the game are most easily identified by the color of the entities they control: Resistance entities are blue, while ones under Enlightened control are green.
** Items are color-coded by their potency;
*** Level 1 items (the weakest) are yellow, Level 8 items (the most powerful) are purple, and everything in between consists of incremental hues of orange, red, and magenta.
*** Common portal mods are green, Rare ones are purple, and Very Rare ones are pink.

Up To Eleven is a defunct trope

* UpToEleven: [[https://plus.google.com/u/0/+NianticProject/posts/Mbhpd3hiKgM Invoked]] by P. A. Chapeau in the wake of the Resistance coming out victorious after a dual anomaly during Operation: Cassandra, a two-week-long in-game event.
--> ''"If you were watching earlier today, you saw a corner turned. From overwhelmed and ensnared in an Enlightened Megafield, the Resistance in Washington D.C. '''turned it up to 11''' and claimed the day. After a victory like that, I hope Resistance morale is high. It's proof that under the toughest circumstances, we are nimble, powerful and united."''
