* AdaptationSpeciesChange: Mantis is portrayed as an alien, as in the MCU, but rather than retaining a more human skin tone, she's portrayed with bright pink skin. Similarly, Drax maintains his AdaptationSpeciesChange initiated in the movies, though he's a Kathatian rather than a Kylosian this time around.

** A minor example in the first chapter: Peter constantly drops pop-culture references, but doesn't see anything out of the ordinary about one of the groups the team's divided into being called "[[Franchise/{{Pokemon}} Team Rocket]]". Why? Because he hasn't been back to Earth since TheEighties and ''Pokemon'' is after his time.

* BrokenAesop: A central theme of the narrative is dealing with grief and loss and having to let go of loved ones who have died. The galaxy is almost destroyed because [[spoiler:a twelve-year-old girl couldn't cope with the loss of her mother.]] This theme is somewhat diluted by the fact that [[spoiler:Groot is able to perfectly resurrect people, namely Fin Fang Foom and our protagonist Peter Quill, with little to no issues. However, it's implied that it only works on the very recently deceased.]]

* RegeneratingShieldsStaticHealth: Peter has two health bars, one for his shield and one for his actual hit points. The shield bar increases back to maximum over time, while his actual hit points don't recover unless you collect green health orbs from defeating enemies.xf
