''Franchise/{{Disgaea}} 4'': ''A Promise Unforgotten'' is the fourth game in the TurnBasedStrategy series ''Franchise/{{Disgaea}}'' by Creator/NipponIchi, released on the UsefulNotes/PlayStation3. The game revolves around Valvatorez -- a vampire who forbade himself from drinking human blood due to a [[ThePromise 400-year-old promise]] -- and his campaign of reformation against the corrupt government of the Netherworld.

An UpdatedRerelease for the UsefulNotes/PlayStationVita with the title ''Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited'' (''Makai Senki Disgaea 4 Return'' in Japan) has been released. In addition to including all of the DownloadableContent from the original game, it also contains a new bonus story. A new version called ''Disgaea 4 Complete+'' released in Fall 2019 for the UsefulNotes/PlayStation4 and UsefulNotes/NintendoSwitch, and in Fall 2020 for PC.

* BonusBoss: In the postgame, you can fight and recruit Axel, [[spoiler:Flonne, [[VideoGame/Disgaea3AbsenceOfJustice Raspberyl]], [[VideoGame/DisgaeaHourOfDarkness Etna, Laharl]], Asagi, and [[VideoGame/MakaiKingdom Zetta]]. Prinny Kurtis]] can be fought and recruited as well, if you encounter him enough times in the Item World then pass a bill in the Senate. Pringer X and its other versions also serve as bonus bosses, except they can't be recruited. Finally, there's a bunch of DLC characters you can fight and recruit.

* DemotedToExtra: Surprisingly, [[spoiler:recurring BonusBoss Baal. Unless you played ''[[VideoGame/Disgaea2CursedMemories Disgaea 2 Dark Hero Days]]'', then you know that Pringer X IS Baal. He does show up as a DownloadableContent battle, though.]]

** And finally, a downloadable BonusBoss battle against [[spoiler:[[DemotedToExtra Baal]]]].

** Unlocking all of the above characters, as well as defeating all of the Pringer X battles, is a requirement for unlocking the fight with [[BonusBoss Baal]].

* {{Feelies}}: The US Premium Edition comes with an artbook, a OST, and a Fuka figurine. The Super Premium comes with all that and an additional 9 figurines.

* LawyerFriendlyCameo: The Spell Keepers for the Omega spells include Anime Tenchou (Fire), [[Literature/SpiceAndWolf Holo]] (Wind), Lotte (Ice), Bikkuriman (Star), and [[LightNovel/ACertainMagicalIndex Index]] (Heal). * TriangRelations: According to Fuka, it's either a type 7 (Artina<->Valvatorez<->Fenrich) or a type 4 (Artina<->Valvatorez<-Fenrich).

* AsskickingEqualsAuthority: Essentially how the president remains in office. He stays president until he is defeated, at which point the position is open to the victor or whoever the victor chooses. [[spoiler:It eventually goes to Axel, since Valvatorez didn't care and was more concerned about Nemo. And then Torn Desco came in...]]

With Valvatorez is Fenrich, his loyal demon wolf servant; Fuka Kazamatsuri, a deceased middle-school student who was sent to the Netherworld and should have been turned into a Prinny (because of budget cutbacks, she just had a Prinny hat slapped on her instead); [[VideoGame/DisgaeaHourOfDarkness Vulca]][[NamesTheSame nus]], the [[OnlyInItForTheMoney Angel of Avarice]]; Emizel, the son of the Netherworld President; and Desco, a [[CuteMonsterGirl monster girl]] whose ambition is to become the FinalBoss.

** Also, unless you do the aforementioned boosting, [[AnAxeToGrind axe-wielding characters]] tend to be like this [[LightningBruiser (except Fuka).]]

** The Information Bureau Chief subverts this. Having just lost, she denies the fight and the outcome happened, to convince the Netherworld that the rebellion isn't working. Val changes her mind by [[TheDeterminatior threatening to defeat her over and over again]].

* DifficultySpike
** Episode 7. Always outnumbered, flooded with Reapers that hit hard and eat your SP, and crippling geo symbols everywhere.
** Then you go to the X Dimension of Episode 7. Ouch. [[spoiler:To make matters worse, you need to capture one of the Reapers to obtain a part needed for the Land of Carnage.]]
*** One could make the argument that Episode 8 is even worse. Same problems as Ep. 7, outnumbered, crippling geo symbols, but also Geo Puzzles and enemies with long ranges. And at the end, you have to fight the boss once, and then a giant version of her a second time without the opportunity to heal up in between.

* DiscOneFinalDungeon: Taken UpToEleven with [[spoiler:''four'' so-called final chapters in a row]].

* DualWielding: You can magichange two monsters onto a humanoid character, allowing the humanoid to attack twice. [[UpToEleven You can even dual wield giant magichange weapons]]!
