Paul Yan later clarified Crash 4 actually takes place before the post-ND pre-revival sequels. This makes sense as there's absolutely nothing in the game's text itself to imply those sequels exist specifically as alternate timelines. If anything, there's subtle details alluding to those games being later events within the main timeline, like Cortex's blueprints to make a Scorporilla from Titans within the background of one of the Cortex Castle levels. https://youtu.be/FwjW10ADGnE?t=875

** If calling it ''Crash Bandicoot 4'' isn't enough indication[[note]]''[[VideoGame/CrashBandicootTheWrathOfCortex Wrath of Cortex]]'' was called ''Crash Bandicoot 4'' in Japan[[/note]], the reveal trailer confirms that ''It's About Time'' takes place directly after ''Warped'' and before any of the post-Naughty Dog games. That's on top of Crash and Coco claiming they only stopped Cortex three times at the end of the trailer. However, [[https://press-start.com.au/features/2020/06/23/crash-4-interview-retro-mode-doctor-neo-cortex-quantum-masks/ the developers have stated in an interview that the post-Naughty Dog games still exist in some form and may have some impact in Crash 4's adventure]].

''Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time'' is a 3D [[PlatformGame platformer]] developed by Toys for Bob and the eighth installment in the ''VideoGame/CrashBandicoot'' series[[note]]if you only count home console platformers[[/note]]. It is the series' first original platforming title since 2008's ''VideoGame/CrashMindOverMutant'', and is a direct sequel to ''VideoGame/CrashBandicoot3Warped'', using a similar art style to ''VideoGame/CrashBandicootNSaneTrilogy'' (though with some changes in character design).

* AdaptationalSeriousness: While Crash and Cortex were the key comic characters in previous games, many titles (especially the later ones) made a point that the entire cast was a CloudCuckooLand. By contrast, in addition to the above AdaptationBadass entries, most of the other characters tend to be playing the StraightMan role against the two leads, with very few jokes at their expense (gameplay deaths aside). It is a recurrent plot point that the others on both sides are getting sick of Crash and Cortex bumbling around while they try to handle things more competently, something that was largely HypocriticalHumor originally.

to:

* TotallyRadical: TogglingSetpiecePuzzle: Lani-Loli is the Quantum Mask of Space, and his main ability in the levels is to swap the physical state of objects, crates and obstacles, allowing Crash and Coco to interact accordingly with them (for example, when jumping between such platforms to avoid falling down). The objects that are phased out have their positions marked with hologram-like replicas, while those currently phased in have ghostly blue wisps floating around them. The toggling can be done by pressing a specific button in the controller, since Lani-Loli is accompanying the characters as a sidekick (like Aku Aku and the other Quantum Masks do), so employing the power is a matter of good timing.

* KnightOfCerebus: While N Tropy was ultimately as much a comical SmallNameBigEgo as Cortex in most earlier games, this game reimagines him into a far more chilling and fearsome villain, taking his machinations ''far'' more seriously than the other bungling scientists. Ultimately Tropy betrays both Uka Uka ''and'' Cortex to claim the world for himself, deeming them beneath him and having outlived their purpose. Their replacement partner turns out to be an alternate dimension version of Tropy himself, who is ''even worse'', having ''killed'' her universe's version of Crash and Coco. While they still get a slapstick defeat in the end, the Tropys remain treated as the bandicoots' most legitimate threat, with their threat level PlayedForDrama far more than nearly anything else in the Crash games.

In the aftermath of ''Warped'''s events, Dr. Cortex, Uka Uka, and Dr. N. Tropy were left stranded in time and space with no way out... but of course, that didn't stop the villains from trying. After ''decades'' of fruitless attempts, they eventually escape their makeshift prison. But there's even worse news-- namely, the fact that in the process, they ''tore a hole in the space-time continuum'', which not only exposes an entire multiverse, but puts all of it at terrible risk. Crash and Coco Bandicoot catch wind of this disturbance and set out to fix it by traversing the many universes to gather the four Quantum Masks; their powers will not only repair the rift, but aid the two on their journey. All the while, Cortex and his associates endeavor to stop them so that the multiverse can be theirs for the taking. Where will this adventure take them? One thing's for sure: it's gonna get ''weird''.
