** The game frequently has party members jump in and out of the story whenever they choose, with each party member getting two chapters to themselves and someone else (except for Darwin, who is half of two chapters and the entirety of a third). Though the game ''will'' forget attribute boosts if these party members were given honeys before their final appearance, the game ''won't'' have the party members [[SoLongAndThanksForAllTheGear run off with the equipment you worked so hard to buy for them.]] This is especially useful since most party members leave at the end of the current chapter they're in, just as shops update their wares, so Rooks has some spare change he can use to equip his newest allies with weapons and update his own armor.

* LinearWarriorsQuadraticWizards: Spellcaster enemies can basically attack the entire party at once whenever they feel like it, but the lower level spells tend to do less damage than the more physical capable enemies. Once enemies start learning higher level spells and inflicting status ailments, though (especially the Attribute spells,) they're far more dangerous than even the strongest purely physical enemies.

Instead, he's KilledOffForReal, and it's Darwin who can equip the weapons and armor. enemies.
** This is also present in the party. While physical damage will outstrip magical damage as a result of ''Arcana'' running off ''Franchise/DragonQuest'' logic with spells, where there isn't a spellcasting ''statistic'' but rather a flat range the magic can hit at, that damage always updates to be appropriate for the newest spell level gained in a given area - in other words, so long as Rooks is leveling up properly, his spirits will always deal great damage with their spells. Since magic alone can target multiple creatures, this gives Rooks' spirits a notable niche no matter the party configuration, and endgame spells shared between Rooks, [[spoiler:Teefa, and Darwin]] are likewise substantial in their own right, often finishing off opponents in a single hit while being held back solely by the fact the non-spirit don't regenerate magic power. Above all else, though, magic is a multiplicative force because even warriors benefit from having debuff and healing spells. The 'warrior' in the equation, Axs, is held back by the fact he only learns ''the'' most basic spells, making him a beatstick and not much else in a game that rewards avoiding damage by quickly dealing with crowds of enemies.
* ManualMisprint: The Equipment section lists a bunch of weapons and armor Ariel, TheDragon, uses, giving the impression he undergoes a HeelFaceTurn and becomes playable. Instead, he's KilledOffForReal, and it's Darwin who can equip the weapons and armor. It's worse because not only is Ariel's name abbriviated, but the translation shows his full name instead, leaving Darwin completely unmentionedunmentioned.
* MasterOfAll: By endgame, Rooks will deal the most damage, be by far the most resilient of the party members available, and only slightly lag behind [[spoiler:Teefa]] in terms of Intelligence and [=MP=]. He also happens to get the second most powerful series of spells at endgame, putting him only behind [[spoiler:Teefa]] in terms of magical might.

Added DiffLines:

* TheRedMage: What the spirits amount to as gameplay functions. None of them hit harder than a stiff breeze physically, but all have both incredibly powerful damage spells they can use with impunity given their regenerating MP and two associated party-wide buff spells; a spell that modifies the element of the party so they deal more and take less damage to and from enemies of opposing elements, and a spell that buffs one of their statistics. Marid and Ifrit take it a step further, in that they also use healing magic. (And, in Marid's case, can awaken sleeping party members.)

Misuse of the page/link

* NintendoHard: A high encounter rate and the fact that you get a GameOver if ''one'' party member dies both contribute to this trope. The game's difficulty is still overrated compared to other first person [=RPGs=] though, such as the Wizardry and Megami Tensei series; enemies lack any sort of insta-death spells and there's plenty of opportunity to train your characters before each boss, meaning any deaths are generally caused by carelessness.

Removing outdated Five Man Band tree

* FiveManBand:
** TheHero: Rooks, who can use the cards for a variety of effects. He can also cast powerful healing magic, and is the strongest physical fighter in the game.
** TheLancer: Darwin, an elven swordsman who also knows a lot of magic, most of which helps to weaken his enemies' attacks. At first he joins Rooks only because they're headed in the same direction, but later on it turns out that he's searching for [[spoiler:Teefa]], who he was given to protect after King Wagnall was murdered ten years ago.
** TheBigGuy: The dwarf warrior Axs is one of the Knights of Lexford, and an old friend of Rooks's father. He raised Princess Salah as her protector after King Wagnall's murder, and later joins Rooks in an effort to stop Galneon.
** TheSmartGuy: Adopted by Axs after King Wagnall's murder, Princess Salah trained as a priestess, a warrior and a magic-user. When she nurses Rooks back to health after he's nearly killed at the Balnia Temple, she decides to join him to overthrow Galneon.
** TheChick: Teefa is apparently one of Ariel's apprentices, who accompanies Rooks on his initial journey to the temple in Balnia. She later [[FaceHeelTurn betrays him]] and steals the Crystal Sword. Later on, it's revealed both that [[spoiler:she's the missing princess]] and that [[spoiler:she was brainwashed by Galneon and Ariel into working for them]]. When Rooks and Darwin free her, she joins the struggle against Galneon.

* NiceHat: Practically a requirement to be a playable character. Rooks has a decent military-style cap ([[AnachronismStew which is a little odd given the apparent development level of the setting]]), Teefa has a big poofy beret, Salah has a rockin' priest's miter, and Axs has a viking helmet as befits a dude who uses an axe.
