%% Fortune asks the Orange Star COs what happens when an army takes a lot of damage at once. Surge replied that the pain of the soldiers would charge a CO Power, and John says that with battles going on all across the continent, CO Powers only charge locally. Sturm's grand experiment is about experimenting with CO Powers, and developed a method to implant them into normal citizens, and his Black Hole [=COs=] were his first successful ones. Lash was totally ecstatic over this.

'''Advance Wars Alpha: Back in the Black''' is a hack of [[VideoGame/NintendoWars Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising]] made by [=Ephraim225=]. With 20 new commanding officers, new gameplay mechanics, and units from other games introduced to ''Advance Wars 2'', this ROM hack is probably the closest thing to a proper sequel (first written before ''Dual Strike'' and ''Days of Ruin'' came about, but further updated long after those games were released) and takes place between the first and second games. - complete with two campaigns of 33 missions apiece and 30 brand new War Room challenges.

[[https://forums.warsworldnews.com/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=14255 You can find out how to get the hack for yourself here]].

* BigEater: Rocky apparently eats a lot, and it shows on his rotund belly.
* BookDumb: While a decent CO, John has problems with reading stuff and staying awake during Field Training simulations.
* BrilliantButLazy: After Reiji wins the mission "For Honor", Rocky invites him to do the next mission, but Reiji rebuffs him by saying that he needs to gain experience if he wants to stop relying on others.

* CasanovaWannabe: John. He even considers Fortune cute, to Summer's frustration.
* CloningBlues: The Green Earth tunnel mission features [[spoiler:Clone Andy]] once again. This time, they know for sure it's a clone after asking it what an airport is [[spoiler:(the real Andy apparently doesn't)]], and are only the slightest bit daunted.
* ConfusionFu: Fortune's Super CO Power, '''Show Time''', allows her direct attack units to swap places with whoever they're fighting, leading to some tricky plays if the player knows what they're doing.
* ContinuityNod: Apparently, Sakura is responsible for Kanbei's missing sock that he was looking for in [=AW2=].
* CoolMask: Sakura has a white fox spirit mask, though she doesn't actually put it on her face.
** Mantis has a gas mask over his face [[spoiler:to hide the scars he got from Irene's disaster]].
* {{Cowgirl}}: Bessie's aesthetic in mirror to Grit.
* CoolOldGuy: Treant, the Green Earth forest CO.

* DarkLordOnLifeSupport: [[spoiler:Sturm turns out to be on this, having been put on it by his forces long ago when they were the Meteor Legion]].
* DiscountCard: Richie's units cost 10% less, but also get 10% less ATK and DEF, worse than Colin.
* DitzyGenius: For all her wackiness, Fortune is the one who's behind the development of new weapons.

* ExpressiveMask: Variation: Fortune's makeup gets a purple tear painted over whenever she's in a negative mood, and disappears whenever she isn't. [[spoiler:It's later implied that Sturm's mad genius (probably Lash) was responsible for Fortune's face being ruined and looking like what it is now permanently.]]
* EyepatchOfPower: Irene sports one over her right eye, which was injured after a bombing accident, when she set up explosives on Sturm's own ships once, but made the mistake of setting the timer too low, costing the lives of her men while she got off "lucky" with only a lost eye. She swore to never handle explosives again after that, but Condor trusts that she won't repeat it on the mission "Detonation". And it seems Mantis is privy to this incident, [[spoiler:since he was Irene's munitions expert]]

* FailedASpotCheck: During the first mission "A New Start", John is busy flirting with Summer to not notice the Black Hole troops in the area until she points them out at him.
* Fiction500: Richie is rich enough to deploy a sizable army just as an ''intel team'', as seen in the mission "Mud Flood".
* FightingClown: Fortune is a version of this, though she calls herself a jester.

* AGlassOfChianti: Xabat has a glass of wine in one hand, and a sword resting on his shoulder in the other.

* HonorBeforeReason: Reiji's first response to hearing of a scouting party captured is to rescue them posthaste, despite Rocky saying they don't have enough men to pull it off. And then he deduces the real reason; given how expensive they are, Reiji cannot afford to let them go to waste.
* HotBlooded: Condor.

* IOweYouMyLife: Mantis joined Black Hole after [[spoiler:the incident that damages Irene's eye because Sturm came to him with that offer in exchange for reviving him

* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: After Summer's first battle against her, Fortune retorts to John that their battle is a game called war, but a little more advanced than that. An ''advance war''.
** Earlier than that, Summer asks John if he read the README file. Which you should too since there are a few changes from the vanilla.
* LongRangeFighter: Bessie serves as the indirect combat specialist for Orange Star after Grit defected to Blue Moon. She desires to eventually surpass him in this forte.

* MalevolentMaskedMan: Besides Sturm, there's also his new right-hand man Mantis, who essentially serves Hawke's role (and is essentially him mechanics-wise).
* MildlyMilitary: As per the norm for the series. Most egregious is Fortune, whose attire is not just out of code for military, but for the ''circus'' too.
* MythologyGag: During the mission "Clean Sweep'', when Surge introduces the new unnamed plane type Nell wants to have tested out, John decides to call it the Duster (after changing his mind from naming it [=LiteFight=]). When Surge disagrees...
--> '''John:''' What were you gonna call it? Fighter B? Interceptor? Tomcat? (Interceptor is what it's called in Dark Conflict, and Surge perfers the name Tomcat).
** After driving off Black Hole from Blue Moon, Evan tells Richie of a pair of orphans [[spoiler:whose named start with "Co" and "Sa". Upon hearing that they have CO Powers based on wealth, Richie jumped in at the chance to back them for the sake of his legacy]].
** While ranting aboue Ayano's newspaper, Reiji makes an aside that the next article will be about a little girl and her teddy bears attacking. A sort-of reference to Penny and Mr. Bear, though she only has one of him.
** When John is in awe of [[spoiler:Sturm's grand plan using Clone Andy, Fortune states that he's actually a commission, and that Black Hole paid some tech lab called "Intelligence (something)" to make it for them. IDS, Caulder's company, it seems.]]

* NeverLiveItDown: When [[spoiler:the real Andy shows up]], Surge asks him what an airport is in order to confirm that [[spoiler:it's the real him]]. Andy is tired of everyone thinking he doesn't know that.
* NiceHat: Fortune sports a red non-tasseled fez. Bessie sports a stetson just like Grit (in the Japanese version). Jack has a top hat as part of his magician ensemble.
* NoodleIncident: Apparently, Kanbei's statue was graffiti'd once, and it had made Sakura upset, as much as when the Staff ends up stolen by Xabat.

* ObligatoryJoke: At the mission "Verdant Fortress", upon cornering Mantis, Condor declares it's time for him to start "praying". Mantis argues it's time for him to start "preying" instead. Freud calls him out on his lame pun.

* PirateGirl: Eph is a self-proclaimed one who ended up joining Blue Moon from parts unknown.
* PubertySuperpower: Apparently, this is how CO Powers manifest, and why nutjobs like Fortune and kids like Andy, Sonja, and Colin can become [=COs=]. Prospective [=COs=]' potential can be figured out not long after they turn 13, and most civilians don't have powers, which makes those who do valuable. [[spoiler:However, Sturm has been experimenting with these Powers, and managed to make new officers such as Fortune and Mantis by implanting a weak CO Power. And unlike natural-born [=COs=], none of them have very strong powers (and have far less potential than natural-born [=COs=]), and there's also a chance that they'll go mad, but they use less energy, which is to Sturm's advantage as the rest of that power goes somewhere else entirely.]]
* PungeonMaster: Evan is all about the winter puns, to Eph's consternation.
* PurpleIsTheNewBlack: John identified the enemy soldiers as colored deep violet, which he calls tacky while reporting it to Nell (who is not amused given that is her default outfit color).
* PsychicLink: Apparently, [=COs=] have a minor level of {{Synchronization}} with the units they command, feeling some of their pain as they take damage. Gifted commanders channel that pain into a boost for their men as a CO Power.

* RagsToRiches: Downplayed since Richie didn't actually start out poor, but he didn't use to be as rich as he is now. but investing in the stock market and the right people paid dividends for him. [[spoiler:While that is the truth, he became a billionaire thanks to a deal with Sturm, who wanted to instigate war in Cosmo Land, but needed Olaf (who was forcefully recruited to Orange Star at the time) in Blue Moon first (since Blue Moon was no threat to them without him). Once Richie made that happen (having been from the same hometown as Olaf), he invested in arms dealers and that's how he became who he is now. Oh, and he also did this as revenge for Blue Moon conscripting Jack into the army.]] Despite his scheming, Richie still genuinely cares for Jack.
* {{Revenge}}: Despite Irene being responsible for [[spoiler:Mantis's facial condition]], he doesn't hold it against her, but he considers it a bonus for becoming a Black Hole CO.

* ScrewTheRulesIHaveMoney: At least according to Mantis, Richie doesn't ''actually'' have CO Powers, but merely uses his wealth to simulate them.
* SeparatedAtBirth: [[spoiler:John of Orange Star and Evan of Blue Moon, as revealed by the latter in the final battle. In fact, John was originally from Blue Moon just like Olaf before being drafted into Orange Star.]] %% Olaf said not to tell Nell he authorized Evan and co. to follow the tunnels.
* ShoutOut:
** Evan is mostly a reference to the NES game ''Slalom'', which is the name of his CO Power. Him being a skiier, the penalty to woods, the bonus on mountains, and his Super CO Power being called ''Mount Nasty''.
** While Ayano's newspaper and it being unreliable is a reference to [[Franchise/TouhouProject Aya Sameimaru]], her CO theme and Super CO Power ''Tornado Hold'' is a reference to [[VideoGame/MegaMan8 Tengu Man]].
** At the end of the Green Earth tunnel mission, [[spoiler:Clone Andy]] had this to say when Condor and company corner him: [[VideoGame/FireEmblemTheBlazingBlade "This is a message from Lord Sturm. 'I await you in Black Hole.'"]] He says this three times, then ends with [[spoiler:"Also, I'm Andy!", which he had been ending his sentences with at the start of the mission. It's annoying enough that Condor chooses to let him go.]]
* SleevesAreForWimps: Surge, just like Max.
** Subverted with Nell's current look, as it's apparently as a result of Max tearing them off by accident a while back. At least, according to John, whom Surge is skeptical
* StageMagician: Jack, on top of being a Blue Moon CO. In fact, before the joined the army, Jack was trying to pass off his CO powers as stage magic, and it lasted until his conscription.

* ThisCannotBe: Once again, Sturm is in a breakdown when his enemies defeat him once again at the final battle. He retreats once again and vows to return, with his [[spoiler:Andy clone]] to bring his troops to full once more.

* UniquenessValue: John's gimmick in that his units are stronger the less of each of a single type there are, and get weaker the more you have. For example, If John has just 1 Tank, it has +20% ATK, if he has 5, no bonuses, and if he has 9 or more, -20% ATK. His Super CO Power, '''One For All''', grants all of his units +5% ATK for each unique type of unit in his army.

* VillainousBreakdown: After spending much of the main campaign composed, he starts crumbling after losing the last Green Earth mission, bemoaning his lost chance of revenge.

* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: At least in the Normal Campaign, the fates of [[spoiler:Volkner, Xabat, and Mantis]] are undetermined at the end, unless you interpret some of the dialog as involking ScrewThisImOuttaHere for [[spoiler:the first and third]], and [[spoiler:the second having been disposed of by Sturm]].
* WildCard: Despite being in Black Hole, Fortune is pretty unpredictable, going so far as to ''leak intel to the enemy''. Volkner doesn't know why Sturm allows her to get away with this. And as the game goes on, it's apparent that she ''hopes'' Black Hole's enemies defeat them, [[spoiler:[[HeelFaceTurn and she eventually betrays Sturm to help his enemies win]].]]
* WingedHumanoid: Ayano has a pair of black wings on her back to go with her tengu motif. Whether or not it's actually just a backpack accessory is not said.

* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: At the start of the last Green Earth mission in the campaign, after listening to Sturm, Mantis requests to eliminate the Green Earth officers [[spoiler:given that Sturm is already so far along in the plan that they're surely no longer needed.]] Sturm calls him out on [[spoiler:using this as an excuse for vengeance]], but allows it anyway. After Mantis takes his leave, turns out [[spoiler:Sturm doesn't count on his survival, win or lose, like with Xabat]].
* YouShallNotPass: At the end of "The Reveal", [[spoiler:when Sturm orders his Clone Andy to use his CO Power on all of his troops, Fortune tells the Orange Star [=COs=] to retreat while she holds them off, allowing them to eventually make a comeback.]] Fortunately, [[spoiler:Fortune comes back alive and announces herself upon hearing Andy calling out for a party, and expresses her tiring of the whole army business.]]

%% Instead of an all-out invasion like in ''Black Hole Rising'', Sturm decides not to use trickery like last time in Cosmo Land. Instead, he intends to set a trap of sorts, for he still has one particular resource to call upon as his subordinates commence with Project Alpha.

%% The story begins with Nell telling Summer that Sami reported unusual sightings during a patrol.

%% John fell asleep during Field Training around Mission 11 or so, and when he woke up, the computer froze.

%% Fortune claims clowns were once tactical masterminds of the kingdom (she may be referring to jesters).

%% Summer hates clowns because the one she hired ruined her 16th birthday.

%% Fan Nod: When Surge states Max has bigger muscles than him, John claims that's because of steroids, and that Nell made him stop taking it after he accidentally tore her sleeves off, not that Surge believes him.

%% In this game, after capturing a Lab, the foot soldier is converted to a full HP Neotank.

%% Surge volunteered for the army. Others aren't so lucky. Who knows what the situation was for Fortune?

%% Bessie looks up to Grit, despite also resenting him for defecting to Blue Moon, which serves as incentive for Bessie to try and surpass him. Summer believes Bessie isn't upset at him for leaving Orange Star, but for leaving ''her'' before she could talk to him.

%% Bessie hopes to find a giant cannon on a turret, and Fortune agrees with the idea and decides she'll call their resident mad genius to invent one (and inevitably also become part of ).

%% How [=COs=] of different sides can talk to one another? Fortune claims everyone's been on public radio the entire time, and Summer wonders if that's been the case. Subverted in that Fortune was just messing with them

%% Mantis is a reference to Metal Gear'sPsycho Mantis in regards to Memory Cards and Player 2 [[spoiler:the way to defeat him]].

%% Fortune claims the white in her face isn't actually make-up at all, but part of her skin.

%% Naval units don't spend fuel daily while on Shoals.

%% Apparently, Sturm's orders take into account the discovery and retaliation of Orange Star, but Volkner doesn't think Black Hole should be pushed back as early as they did.

%% Summer and company are suspicious over how Sturm can easily steamroll them, yet is performing this covert operation. Naturally, Fortune isn't telling. After defeating her, when the clown congratulates them, the company realize that they've been able to access Labs before Black Hole, which means Black Hole has been doing this on purpose.

%% John asks Fortune if she's sure she wants to throw her lot in with Black Hole, and she seems to imply that she's under Lord Sturm's thumb, that nobody opposes him, ever. She then tells him and the others that if they want to stop Black Hole, they should find the tunnels to their headquarters, which are found in cities all over the world. Thankfully, mission dialog will hint when there's a city in a map, so there's no need to scour through every city in every mission just to get a better ending.

%% Over at Blue Moon, Evan reports sightings of building a new sewer line without authorization (which is apparently for deploying Fortune's new weapon, the Piperunner), and immediately assumes Richie is behind it, calling him a shady miser, and seems to imply that Richie is behind "something" Evan and Eph know, and Commander Olaf was involved. According to Volkner, this also has the side effect of dumping the excess mud in the rivers, making them not freeze in snowy weather and giving Black Hole the advantage over Blue Moon. Volkner also seems to know, and he's familiar with Richie because [[spoiler:Sturm requested help from the Blue Moon CO in order to instigate the Cosmo Land conflict. Richie claims to have used Sturm instead. Orange Star and Blue Moon were bitter rivals, and Olaf was forecrfully recruited into the former. Sturm was willing to back Blue Moon Richie if Olaf rejoined his home country, and it was Richie who negotiated Olaf's defection back. That said, he wasn't counting on Olaf or Sturm winning against Orange Star in the end. And so he got revenge on Blue Moon for conscripting Jack]].
%% The reason for the sewer line construction is to create Piperunners

%% Mantis calls out Volkner for pretending to be more brilliant than he seems to be.

%% Ayano runs a newspaper, but Reiji doesn't find it worth reading, given the latest one covered ''vampires'' infintrating Yellow Comet. Rocky's reported a lot of stolen fuel tanks. Ayano actually writes in code so that there's no panic rising amongst the public.

%% Apparently, magnets on the pipelines make planes go haywire when they try to fly over them, as demonstrated when Richie's private jet tried. It's only thanks to taking an escape jet and Jack that they survived. This explains why even air units cannot go over it.

%% When Richie asks why Jack saved him despite hearing of his dark dealings with Black Hole, the stage magician states he's not sure either, except that he wants to understand why Richie did what he did. Richie replied that he had done them out of spite.

%% Evan seems to know John as a friend. In fact, they're actually brothers separated at birth

%% Just before the "" battle, Evan was contacted by an orphanage that housed war victims, more than even he knew about, that comfirmed that two of their children have CO Powers, which are based upon wealth... that they don't have. Evan figures Richie could do that orphanage some charity, as a means of throwing off his suspicions. And it turns out their names might be '''Co'''lin and '''Sa'''sha. Richie jumps at the chance to provide support... in order to add to his legacy.

%% Xabat's reason for being at Yellow Comet is for revenge on behalf of his ancestors when the nation cheated them out of their reign. (Clue: Consider the name Yellow Comet)

%% Buried under the crater in Yellow Comet is the key to an ancient superweapon: the Staff of Amaterasu. It goes all the way back to the first Empress whom the staff was named after. She had been engaged in a war with the rebellious Meteor Legion. Unable to win conventionally, a superweapon was commissioned; a staff that could pull down a (fragment of a real) comet from space upon the land. Though it could ultimately only pull down a frament of a real comet, it devastated both sides, and it brought eternal shame on Amaterasu. The crater is the site from where the weapon was fired, and why the nation is called Yellow Comet. The staff had been presumed buried under the destruction.

%% Fortune isn't happy with Xabat planning to actually ''use'' the Staff of Amaterasu. She prefers possession of it as a ''deterrent'' since firing it would ''destroy Black Hole as well''. Besides, unmanned weapons won't contribute to Sturm's plans. But Xabat cares only for victory, not results.

%% Volkner lampshades that the Staff of Amaterasu replicate's Sturm's own power. However, long ago, according to Xabat, Emperess Amaterasu stole it and used it against Black Hole, which seems to be what the Meteor Legion is now. They could not afford to lose their leader, or their powers, so they made great advances in life support technology. Xabat also implies that life support technology was used

%% Age brings with it vast knowledge, but the elderly often cling to what little they have left. Black Hole lack unity as its oldest leaders squabble for power. Xabat intends to claim the staff to unite the nation under its unmatched power. Volkner notes that there still needs to be someone on top, and asks Xabat if that was his plan all along. He doesn't deny that being in mind. Despite offering a respectable position, Volkner privately declines.

%% Despite losing the battle in the YC battle vs. Ayano OR Sakura, Xabat managed to unearth the Staff anyway.

%% Rocky wonders why Amaterasu didn't just dispose her Staff in lava or something. Reiji explains that they didn't have the means to destroy the metal it was made out of. After all, why create something so easily destructible?

%% Upon being cornered, Xabat appears to use the Staff even if it isn't fully charged to escape Sakura and company, leaving them with having to try to stop the comet he summoned. Ultimately, Sakura only managed to slow its descent down to a crawl and not arrive for a long time (nine years to be exact). And by then, it would more likely arrive in a million pieces, somehow paving the way for ''Days of Ruin''.

%% Condor doesn't get what "he" sees in "him". Condor thought he was talking about Andy's skills, but turns out Condor was bothered by Eagle being picked as the Orange Star CO's rival since he's the better pilot.

%% Freud is more into the beauty of nature, mainly roses (''precisely'' beause they have thorns) and wine, while Treant appreciates all of it, even the weeds. Treant has been tracking enemy movement in the woods, checking for tank tracks, the smell of oil, and signs of bathroom breaks (to Freud's disgust)

%% After being defeated by Treant in "Treant's Treck", Mantis warns that there is an unpleasant surprise in store, which might trigger a few unhappy memories.

%% At the end of "Demolition", Irene sets the timer to 30 seconds, but ended up being 5 seconds fast, were it not for Mantis disarming it, though he had to retreat anyway due to the basing already taking too much damage.

%% Sturm would've been against Xabat's plan, since his goal is to have something left after the war is over. That end is the basis for his plan for Wars World.

%% Freud has a picture if Irene, having feelings for her. Treant finds it weird.

%% Condor finds Mantis's reason for staying with Black Hole absurd and asks why he won't defect. He replied that destruction is far from what Sturm wants, and wants conquest with as little wreckage as possible.

%% Volkner is apparently undercover.

%% Fortune had gone M.I.A. weeks ago since Sturm called for her.

%% Prior to Sturm, Mantis wasn't an officer among Irene's men, so he didn't have CO Powers, until Sturm's experiments

%% Fortune and the others having weaker CO Power has a story reason. And it's still to Sturm's advantage in the end as it uses less energy.

%% Sturm's end goal is to conquer Wars World and essenially turn it into a machine. No more resources blown on warfare, just an empire of workers under him. To that end, there's one final key to his entire stratagem. (The OS guys) guesed that a CO Power is being charged, and it turns out to be Clone Andy's. Sturm plans to use the clone's CO Powers to restore all his damaged units back at full fighting force. Clone Andy is a commission

%% but whose? Hint: The army is far too damaged for a full invasion. (Clone Andy?)

%% Come his turn 4 in "The Reveal", Clone Andy will always have his CO Power ready... even if you managed to build up his meter all the way to Super CO Power. THe OS [=COs=] are baffled either way, and FOrtune realizes that Clone Andy is drawing on the stored CO Power energy. He'll be able to do that again every four days.

%% At the end of "The Reveal", Sturm shows up, outs Fortune as a traitor, then has his Clone Andy use up all his CO Power to repair all of his damaged troops.

%% John guesses Andy was fixing up their units behind the scenes while they were busy fighting Sturm.
