** Maxima from ''KOF' 99'' shares a name with the hero of ''VideoGame/RoboArmy''. In fact, Maxima is modeled after the earlier game's hero, both of them being {{cyborg}} soldiers.

** Chang and Choi were originally meant to debut with another fugitive character back in their debut in ''KOF 94''. But Kim was added in instead, starting the rehabilitation plot. Come ''KOF XIV'' however, this idea would be realized by pairing the two with newcomer and fellow convict, Xanadu.

* RealLifeWritesThePlot: Nakoruru's Another World Team faces this issue, as after ''VideoGame/SNKHeroinesTagTeamFrenzy'', SNK ended up losing the ownership of both of her teammates, Love Heart and Mui Mui, and so Nakoruru had to sit out the ''XV'' initial roster despite being one of the more knowledgable people about Verse. [[spoiler:Though if the content leak was true, then Nakoruru may return as DLC, bringing along Haohmaru and Darli Dagger for her team.]]

* [[FanNickname/TheKingOfFighters Fan Nickname]]

* [[TalkingToHimself/TheKingOfFighters Talking to Himself]]

* FanNickname:
** In order to differentiate Kyo from his clones, fans often refer to his NESTS depiction as "Shin Kyo" ([[MeaningfulName as in]] "True Kyo").
*** In Japan, the clones Kyo-1 and Kyo-2 are known as Mero and Hoki after their respective favorite foods (two different kinds of fish), while Kusanagi is abbreviated to Nagi.
** [[HoYay Yaoiori]] for Iori, thanks to all of his FoeYay with Kyo. The infamous "Yagami is I'm-a-gay backwards" joke didn't help in this regard; his tendency of throwing out ambiguously gay lines in his special intros with Kyo probably helped even less. This is [[ShipTease teased]] to no end by various official/fan works.
** Fathena or Athiccna for Athena's appearance in ''XII'' and ''XIII'': {{Moe}}ness and chubby legs.
** Yuri's parody of the [[Franchise/StreetFighter Shun Goku Satsu]], the Yuri Chou Enbu, is sometimes called the Shin Yuri Satsu.
** Kim is sometimes nicknamed as The Beijing King, thanks to the WebVideo/MyWayEntertainment fan dub of one of the ''Fatal Fury'' [=OVAs=].
** [[ThoseTwoBadGuys Chang and Choi]] are sometimes referred to as "WesternAnimation/TomAndJerry".
** Ralf's Neo MAX from ''XIII'' has been christened as the [[RatedMForManly MAN]]retsuken (a play on Ryo's Zanretsuken), due to the [[AwesomenessIsVolatile overflowing abundance of GAR]].
** Robert's [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1U_5rCax8Y Hien Shippu Ryuujin Kyaku Neo MAX]] is alternatively called ''[[VideoGame/TonyHawksProSkater Robert Garcia's Pro Skater XIII]]'' and [[Series/KamenRider Rider Kick]].
** Firstly, there's Rugal's "Rugalspin" (Dead End Screamer DM, 1998 only). This owes a lot from ''{{VideoGame/MUGEN}}''.
** Adelheid is mostly known in Spanish-speaking communities as Rugalito.
** [[SNKBoss Cheesenitz]] and Goenadz for the Goenitz himself, as well as the Goenitzpin, another [[MemeticMutation meme]] spawned in the wake of the Rugalspin thanks to his new HSDM/[=MAX2=] in ''2002: Unlimited Match''.
** Geese is usually called [[SNKBoss Geeser the Cheeser]] and [[JustForPun Geeseter Bunnie]]. As for his Raging Storm DM, there's the Pretzel due to the move's [[SomeDexterityRequired absurd input command]] that was made that convoluted ''just'' for the sake of nostalgia.
** Due to having the most tournament wins in ''KOF'' canon (as well as his tendency to be on the Hero team in every saga in some capacity[[note]] Fought alongside Kyo and Daimon for the Orochi saga, was in ''[='=]99's'' Hero Team alongside K', Maxima, and ''Shingo'' of all people, was a part of the Rival Team alongside Elisabeth and Duo Lon (the canon winners of the ''XI'' tournament), and is now joining Shun'ei and Meitenkun as part of ''XV's'' Hero Team. [[/note]]), Benimaru is sometimes jokingly called the UsefulNotes/LeBronJames of KOF.
** Krauserspin or Gigatech Cyclone for Krauser's Gigantic Cyclone SDM. Again, blame ''{{VideoGame/MUGEN}}''.
*** Also there's Betty [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMMJkvY4OUc for an]] [[DummiedOut unused DM]] for Krauser in ''[='96=]''.
** K9999 is [[CaptainObvious obviously]] known as the "[[Manga/{{Akira}} Tetsuo]] of KOF" as well as [=Tetsuo9999=], being [[GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff very popular in South America]]. Even in ''{{VideoGame/MUGEN}}'' there's a version of him with dialogs directly ripped from the movie and new moves that resembled ''AKIRA'', called as "Another K9999."
*** The same fans rejected Nameless as his replacement, calling him nicknames like KOF [[Manga/{{Naruto}} Sasuke Uchiha]] or NESTS EmoTeen as others.
** Shingo's notebook full of information on his techniques has been known as both the ''Manga/DeathNote'' and Website/GameFAQs thanks to his HSDM in ''2002: Unlimited Match''.
** Mongolia - Maxima, with one of his normal moves being a Mongolian Chop. It's from the Japanese ''{{VideoGame/MUGEN}}'' community where they call him such due to parody videos involving him doing that move a lot.
** Ass Crimson - Ash Crimson from ''2003'', who is so flamboyant that he might qualify as a GorgeousGeorge. He's also sometimes called Ass Crapson, Fish Crimson (stemming from an unfortunately squished uppercase "A" in one of the ''XI'' menus resembling the letter F) and Fist Crimson. [[ViewerGenderConfusion Ashley]] [[PrecisionFStrike Crishit]] and Ash [[PrecisionFStrike Shitson]] are less popular but still common variations of the above. You can tell that ''a lot'' of people hate [[ReplacementScrappy Ash]], but SNK ([[AmericansHateTingle and the Japanese]]) [[CreatorsPet just love him]]. Of course, all fan nicknames for Ash Crimson became discredited [[spoiler: [[WellIntentionedExtremist once his true motives were revealed]]]], and for his eventual return in ''XV''.
** Chuuni for Shun'ei in ''XIV'' due both to his design giving off vibes of the stereotypical {{chuunibyou}} teenager and the similarity of his name to the term.
** Some custom teams gain fan nicknames, too. From ''XIV'', we have [[HasTwoMommies "Team My Two Daddies"]], made up of Rock Howard, Terry Bogard and Geese Howard.
** In ''XV'', with Luong replacing Seth/Ramon as the third member of the Secret Agents team alongside Mary and Vanessa, a myriad of nicknames for this team have ranged from, "Team [[Film/CharliesAngels Heidern's Angels]]" to references to ''WesternAnimation/TotallySpies'', to "Team MILF", among others.
** With Athena, Mai and Yuri teaming together as the Super Heroine team in ''XV'', fans have given them the nicknames "Team Athena And Friends" and "Team Yuri And Friends", referencing Saigado's (in)famous doujinshi series.
** Due to an unfortunate case of PopCulturalOsmosis as the character hasn't been seen in a fighting game for ''25'' years, in ''XV'' Yashiro Nanakase has been given the nickname of "Dancing [[VideoGame/StreetFighterIII Urien]]" or "Dancing [[VideoGame/{{Tekken}} Bryan Fury]]". This is despite the fact that Yashiro predates Urien by at least a few months.[[note]] ''The King of Fighters [='=]97'' released to Japanese arcades on July 28th, 1997 while ''Street Fighter III: Second Impact'' released just two months later on September 30th. ''Tekken 3'' on the other hand was released on March 20th, with Bryan predating Yashiro by four months in this respect. [[/note]]

* TalkingToHimself: Get yourself a snack, this could take a while.
** Brian Battler shares a seiyuu with Kensou, Eiji Yano. Yano was also the announcer for ''2002'', as well as Krizalid's voice in ''2001''.
** Toshimitsu Arai, the voice of Rugal, also voices Heidern, as well as Original Zero and Saisyu (only in ''[[VideoGame/TheKingOfFighters95 KOF '95]]'', though).
** Jeff Manning voices Andy, Ralf, and Shen Woo in the English version of ''XII''.
** Satoshi Hashimoto voices both Terry and Kim.
** Hiroyuki Arita, the voice of Chang, also voices Silber in ''XI'' (though Chang doesn't fight in this entry). Yoshinori Shima, [[TheOtherDarrin his original seiyuu]] from ''[='94=]'' and ''[='95=]'', also voices Clark, Eiji, and Goenitz.
** Toshikazu Nishimura voices Chin and Heavy D! in ''[='94=]'' and ''[='98=]''. Josh Keller (who voices Chin in the dub for ''XII'') also voices Duo Lon and Kensou in the same dub.
** Hanzo has the same seiyuu as Ryo in ''[=MI2=]'', Masaki Usui, who also voices Goro Daimon.
** Lilly Kane shares [[Creator/YumiKakazu a seiyuu]] with Kula.
** Haruna Ikezawa voices Foxy in ''2001'' and ''2002 Unlimited Match'', in addition to Athena.
** Richard Meyer is voiced by Kong Kuwata, who also voices Geese Howard and Duck King.
** Eric Kelso voices Takuma, Clark and Benimaru in the English version of ''XII'' and ''XIII''.
** Monster Maezuka voices Ralf, Benimaru, and Choi.
** Masahiro Nonaka voices Kyo's [[JustifiedTrope clones]], Kyo-1 and Kyo-2. Subverted with evil, magical doppelganger Kusanagi, who is instead voiced by Creator/MitsuoIwata.
*** However, ''KOF [[BulletHell Sky Stage]]'' seems to be using Nonaka instead of Iwata for the voice of Kusanagi, which of course plays this trope straight again.
*** In ''XII'' and ''XIII'', he shares an Englsh VA (Peter von Gomm) with ''Ash'' of all people.
** King shares her seiyuu (Harumi Ikoma, who also is the announcer in ''KOF '96'', ''KOF '98'', ''KOF XI'', and ''KOF XII'') with Blue Mary. Ikoma also voiced King's [[CrossdressingVoices brother]] [[SpellMyNameWithAnS Jean/Jan]] in ''KOF: Kyo''.
** Greg Irwin voices Joe and Robert in the dub of ''XII''/''XIII''.
** Kazuhiro "Kay" Inage (who voiced Robert in ''KOF '94'' and ''[='95=]'', and returned in ''XI'') also voices Lucky. Mantaro Koichi (who voiced Robert from ''KOF '96'' to ''2003'') was also the announcer in ''[='97=]''.
*** Kay Inage also voiced [[VideoGame/FightersHistory Mizoguchi]] in ''Regulation A''. Both he and Robert are semi-shotos with a flying kick move, both have the Tiger as their AnimalMotif, and EX Robert's HSDM in ''2002: Unlimited Match'' ends with him firing a Tiger-shaped Haoh Shokoken, identical to Mizoguchi's "Tiger Bazooka Attack".
** While Rugal was only voiced by Creator/NorioWakamoto only in ''2002'' and ''Neowave'', that made him share his voice with Igniz.
** In ''XIII'', Sonosuke Nagashiro voices both Hwa Jai and Ash (and Saiki, by extension).

The following entries have their own pages:
* [[TheOtherDarrin/TheKingOfFighters The Other Darrin]]
* [[RelationshipVoiceActor/TheKingOfFighters Relationship Voice Actor]]
* [[WhatCouldHaveBeen/TheKingOfFighters What Could Have Been]]

----

* TheOtherDarrin:
** Jun Hashimoto (Andy Bogard's seiyuu in ''KOF '94'') was replaced by Creator/KeiichiNanba in the following game; Nanba has voiced Andy in all subsequent games until ''KOF XIV'', where Creator/HiroshiOkamoto took over.
** In ''XII'', Matsuo Matsuo now voices Chin instead of Toshikazu Nishimura. Come ''XIV'', Shintaro Tanaka takes over.
** Several characters had alternate voice actors/actresses in the ''[='94=]'' Dengeki drama CD:
*** Kyo: Creator/RyotaroOkiayu.
*** Benimaru: Creator/HikaruMidorikawa.
*** Daimon: Creator/RyuzaburoOtomo.
*** King: Creator/YumiTouma.
*** Mai: Music/MegumiHayashibara.
*** Ryo: Creator/AkiraKamiya.
*** Yuri: Creator/SakuraTange.
*** Takuma: Creator/HochuOtsuka.
*** Rugal: Creator/BanjoGinga.
*** Terry: Creator/TakeshiKusao.
*** Joe: Creator/KazukiYao.
** Katsuhisa Namase voiced Joe in ''KOF '94''. Creator/NobuyukiHiyama has taken over the role since then, until ''XIV'' where Kozo Mito took over.
** Robert Garcia: Kazuhiro "Kay" Inage was replaced by Mantaro Koichi, who voiced Robert from ''KOF '96'' to ''2003''. When Robert popped up as a SecretCharacter in ''XI'' (which was based off of his appearance in MascotFighter ''VideoGame/NeoGeoBattleColiseum''), Inage returned to voice Robert, and continues to do so in ''XII'' and ''XIII''. Come ''XIV'', Inage gets replaced by Creator/GoShinomiya.
** Bunsyu Shinoya takes over for Ralf in ''XII''. In English, Scott Casey in the ''Maximum Impact'' series, Jeff Manning in ''XII''.
** In English, Clark went from Sean Michaels (''Maximum Impact'') to Eric Kelso (''XII'').
** Kim is voiced by Kazuhiko Nagata in ''XII'', succeeding Satoshi Hashimoto (Hashimoto voices Terry until ''XIII'', where Creator/TakashiKondo takes over for ''XIV'').
** Akoya Sogi (who has voiced Mai from the beginning up to ''XI'') has been replaced by Creator/AmiKoshimizu as of ''KOF Sky Stage''. Given that Sogi has apparently retired, it's a safe bet to assume that Koshimizu will take over in all subsequent appearances. This could also be the reason behind Mai's absence in ''XII''.
** For Kyo, Andrew Roth (his English VA in the ''Maximum Impact'' series) was replaced by Peter von Gomm come ''XII''.
*** His Japanese Voice is also changed for ''XIV'', with Creator/TomoakiMaeno taking over Masahiro Nonaka.
*** Ditto for Iori, who used to be voiced by Creator/KunihikoYasui ever since his debut, until in ''XIV'' he was replaced by Creator/TakanoriHoshino.
** Between ''[='94=]'' and ''[='98=]'', Athena's voice changed as much as her clothes, with one for every game. In order: Reiko Fukai, Moe Nagasaki, the aforementioned Tamao Sato, Chris Yukina, and lastly Haruna Ikezawa, which was the one who stuck. It can be presumed that this was because SNK was testing out seiyuu for her.
** The unfortunate consequence of the suicide of Creator/DaisukeGori led to Raiden's voice duty being handed over to Iain Gibb in ''XIII''.
** Krizalid is a rather perplexing example in that ''both'' of his seiyuu are used in ''2002 UM'' (Yoshiyuki Iwamoto for him as a standalone character, Eiji Yano for him as one of Original Zero's Strikers). Semi-justified since they are two different Krizalids, the one who backing Zero being a clone of the one who hosted the '99 tournament.
** Rugal also has this kind of case, as while Toshimitsu Arai has voiced him in nearly all of his appearances, his appearances in ''2002'' and ''Neowave'' instead have him voiced by Creator/NorioWakamoto.
** En masse for XIV, many voice talents got replaced, not the first time it happened in the series as one can see above but XIV took many mainstays out in one go; characters that had the same voice for decades (Kyo, Kensou, Yuri to name a few) were finally, but sadly, gone. And also shockingly, despite still being active with his voice quality intact, Creator/NobuyukiHiyama did ''not'' return for Joe. The only characters who didn't get recast were Geese, Benimaru, King, Mai, Athena, Chang, Choi, Kula, Maxima [[spoiler:and Tizoc as the King of Dinosaurs.]]
** Nakoruru subverts this in ''XIV'', though. Harumi Ikoma, her very original voice actress, did not return for her. However, Creator/MaiNakahara, who was voicing her during her appearances in ''Samurai Shodown'''s Pachislot titles reprised her role.
** In her old Pachislot title, Love Heart was voiced by Creator/AtsukoTanaka. Come her KOF debut, Creator/ToaYukinari took over.
** Creator/MinaTominaga voiced Angel in ''2001'', and got replaced by Creator/MayumiShintani in ''2002'' and later Miki Ogura in ''XIV''.
** Ramon went from Creator/EijiTakemoto to Kiyoshi Katsunuma come ''XIV''. Takemoto also did not reprise Rock Howard for his DLC appearance, despite the fact Rock hasn't had a lot of appearances in general, changing to Creator/YuumaUchida.
** Krohnen/[[spoiler:K9999]] went from Creator/NozomuSasaki to Creator/{{KENN}} in ''XV''. Likewise, Elisabeth is also no longer voiced by Kayoko Oshima, but rather Creator/ShizukaIto.
** Bizarrely enough in ''Animation/TheKingOfFightersDestiny'', Mature, who already had an established new voice actress in ''XIV'', got hers replaced ''once again'' in the series, being replaced with Creator/YuShimamura instead.

* WhatCouldHaveBeen: Beside the various prototype designs of characters (many of which can be seen as Strikers in ''2000''), many plot points were shafted or altered:
** Orochi Iori was originally planned to be the final boss of ''[='97=]'' (remnants of this manifest as Iori being a BonusBoss in said game if you beat Orochi with Kyo).
** Kyo and Iori were going to be dropped from ''[='99=]'' to put emphasis on K'. They became secret characters instead.
** The biggest "what if?" would have to come from ''2001''. One could only imagine what direction the series would have taken if SNK hadn't gone bankrupt after ''2000''.
*** WordOfGod says that the game was originally meant to be an epic installment similar to ''97'', to wrap up the NESTS storyline. The game was said to return to the 3 vs 3 format, with a hero team consisting of K', Kula and Krizalid, who inexplicably returned. A sub boss team similar to ''97''[='s=] Orochi team was apparently planned, consisting of Ron, a cloned version of Krizalid, and Zero before fighting Father NESTS, the final boss. But then Eolith happened, and we got K' on his old team, Kula lumped in with Foxy and two of Eolith's creations, and Krizaild totally removed, though his voice clips remain in the game's files. Ron and the clone Krizalid became strikers for Zero, and NESTS was killed off in the cutscenes to make room for Eolith's new boss, Igniz. The validity of all this information is debated, but ''2001'' went on to become possibly the least popular game in the entire series, or at least the canon games. What could have been indeed...
** Even better, this series wasn't even originally a [[FightingGame fighting game]]; it was going to be a [[BeatEmUp beat 'em up]] in the vein of ''VideoGame/FinalFight'' and ''[[VideoGame/StreetsOfRage Streets of Rage]]'' called ''Survivor'' with Terry, Robert, and Ralf as playable characters.
** Athena's appearance in ''XII'' [[http://snk.wikia.com/wiki/File:Athena_rejected_artwork.jpg was originally conceived to be not quite as loli/moe as the final result.]] Said art would be polished and used as a promo image for ''The Rhythm of Fighters''.
** Rugal was originally planned to [[DittoFighter mirror special moves of the characters and use them against them]]. Hardware limitations killed this idea. Rugal's Reppuken, Kaiser Wave, and [[AttackReflector Dark Barrier]] are relics of this idea.
** Believe it or not, it was planned for Terry to actually ''die'' at the climax of ''[='99=]''[[note]]One of the Fatal Fury team endings give off this vibe by having Terry stay behind in the collapsing base, but TheStinger reveals that he survives[[/note]]. Luckily, head management disagreed and brought him back in ''2000'', avoiding what would have been a shocking PlayerPunch and the ensuing barrage of complaints. However, the "what if" aspect of his death was played up for the remainder of the saga to the point that Blue Mary told Terry how his teammates ([[ShipTease or more specifically, her]]) were worried about him in the team's ''2000'' ending.
** Kim was supposed to debut in the first ''Maximum Impact'' under the alias of "Mr. Taekwondo", akin to "Mr. Karate". Instead, [[DistaffCounterpart Chae Lim]] took his place, and Kim popped up in the sequel as his good 'ol regular self. Chae Lim herself was chosen over the likes of Jhun Hoon, May Lee, and ''Buriki One'' character Seo Yong Song.
** Originally, Chang and Choi were going to be paired up with another dangerous criminal to from the "Fugitive Team". Kim was a last-minute addition, thus setting up the whole "rehabilitation" plot. [[RefittedForSequel This concept would be revisited]] for XIV, with Chang and Choi teaming with Xanadu to form the Villains Team.
** King's Surprise Rose super move from ''Art of Fighting 2'' was her original DM in ''[='94=]'' but was scrapped for some reason. King's designer then came up with the Illusion Dance DM and it was well received. Surprise Rose returned in later games as a mere special move for King. It was turned back into a DM in ''2002: Unlimited Match'' and ''XII''.
** Ralf (and presumably Clark) was supposed to have a moveset revolving around grenades back in his ''KOF'' debut as a ShoutOut to ''Ikari Warriors''. This was scrapped due to a possible case of [[GameBreaker game breaking mechanics]].
*** Lampshaded in the intro dialogue between Kyo and Clark in ''XIII'', wherein Clark explains that the grenades he's wearing are duds, so there's no danger of them going off if Kyo uses his fire on them.
** Heidern's moveset and their names were so strange that the designers were going to make him an alien as explanation for his "abilities." However, the lead designer became attached to the character, giving him a tragic backstory instead and keeping him as a human.
** Saisyu was supposed to have died during his EarlyBirdCameo in ''[='94=]''. His appearance in the following game was a last-minute addition.
** "Chris of the Flames of Destiny" (aka, Orochi Chris) was originally going to have black flames, but the idea was dumped as they would have been too hard to notice in his rather dark stage.
** [[FanDisservice One of Orochi's early designs was that of a naked Chris using an energy ball to attack...]]
** [[https://archive.org/details/kof-characters-kof-94-97-zen-45-chara-settei-shiryou-kanzen-shuuroku/page/117/mode/2up Concept art]] for ''[='94=]'' and ''[='95=]'' depicts what appears to be Chris in his Hakkeshu robes as a potential character. Given that no such concepts exist for ''[='96=]'' onwards, it seems that character concept was [[DecompositeCharacter split]] with the concept evolving into Goenitz while the design was retooled for Chris in ''[='97=]''. Chris does wear Hakkeshu robes in one of the ''[='98=]'' credits images (along with Yashiro and Shermie) and the concept of Chris fighting in the robes would be revisited in ''VideoGame/KOFAllStars'' with "False Resurrection Chris".
** [[http://game.snkplaymore.co.jp/official/kof-xiii/blog/archives/2010/08/post_28.html According to the Developers' Blog]] for ''XIII'', Chang, Malin, Momoko, and Oswald were meant to be in the game. Chang was reduced to a cameo in the India stage, whereas the other three cameo in endings (the Women Fighters Team, Psycho Soldiers Team, and Ash Crimson, respectively).
*** And Chang (along with Choi) makes the customary Kim Team ending cameo.
** Vanessa was supposed to be playable in ''[='99=]'', but didn't make it in time. She makes an EarlyBirdCameo as a Striker in the ''[='99=] Evo'' console release.
** The Neo MAX supers in ''XIII'' were at first created as extensions to normal supers, but because of testing feedback they were eventually changed into stand alone supers. A few Neo MAX supers in the final build still look like they were supposed to follow up on normal supers, some of them only effective gameplay-wise when used as such.
** Adelheid was apparently meant to be playable in ''XIII'', based on some full-body and winpose sketches by Eisuke Ogura.
** If [[http://snk.wikia.com/wiki/File:Adel_and_rose_99.jpg unused]] [[http://snk.wikia.com/wiki/File:Adel_and_99_2.jpg concept]] [[http://snk.wikia.com/wiki/File:Magaki_unused.jpg art]] for ''[='98=]'' and ''[='99=]'' is any indication, it might have been intended for Adel, Rose, and Magaki to join the series as early as the NESTS Chronicles. In particular, one of Rose's prototype designs is shared with that of Whip.
** Foxy, who made her debut in ''2001'', originally wasn't meant to be playable. When it was decided that she'd be added to the roster, it was intended for Diana to join her, although this didn't pan out because of time constraints and Diana remains to this day an NPC.
** Raiden's first playable entry in the KOF series (prior to ''XIII'') was going to be in ''2003'', but the developers eventually decided on using Tizoc instead.
*** His 'Big Bear' persona was also going to appear in ''[='94=]'', but scrapped in favor of Yuri being added.
** Billy Kane was planned to be playable in ''[='94=]'', but scrapped due to limitations.
** Whip was planned to enter the series as early as ''[='96=]'', but was pushed backed til ''[='99=]'' due to Leona being introduced.
** In order to decide on who would become the members of the '97 Special Team for ''[='97=]'', three polls were conducted by the Japanese video game magazines ''Weekly Famitsu'', ''Gamest'', and ''Neo Geo Freak'', in which the readers had voted for the characters that they wanted to see in the game as part of the team itself. While Billy was the winner of the ''Neo Geo Freak'' poll and Yamazaki had won the ''Weekly Famitsu'' poll, Duck King had came very close to winning the ''Gamest'' poll, but ended up losing to Blue Mary who had barely defeated Duck via a few mere votes and that Duck himself was reduced to making background cameos until he finally became a playable character in ''XI''.
** It's speculated that Kasumi Todoh was meant to be in the original release of '''98'', even before her appearance in ''Ultimate Match''.
** ''2002'' may have been planned to keep Strikers, as a lot of unused old Striker animations were kept in the game's code.
*** It's also rumored that ''2002'' was going to bring back the Sidestep system; many old Sidestep animations are in the game's code, especially curious as the other NESTS games do not contain them.
** Among the [[http://www.siliconera.com/2017/11/05/snk-picks-saudi-arabian-fans-design-character-design-contest/ characters submitted]] to the Character Design contest, there was a burly man who fought by wearing an eagle-inspired armor, a young man that fought with ink, a soldier that used a scarf as a weapon and a bespectacled guy carrying a giant sand clock on his back.
** Among the potential DLC costumes SNK considered for ''XIV'', the entire list itself had consisted of [[https://imgur.com/jldNPft MOTW Terry, Business Suit Geese, a ton of costumes for Mai]], [[https://imgur.com/CmiHRnV King in different cocktail dresses, Mui Mui in a panda suit, Ryo's Mr. Karate II persona, KOD with a Triceratops motif, Kim Sue Il clothes for Kim, Meitenkun in a sheep costume]], [[https://imgur.com/YyfYQ2c Yuri in a cheerleading outfit, Angel donning the "Tizoc 2" persona, Goth Sylvie, and a Rera color palette for Nakoruru]] among others.
** According to [[http://news.denfaminicogamer.jp/nicolive/181115a this interview]] from SNK during their 40th anniversary, a ''VideoGame/SamuraiShodown'' team was initially planned and potentially considered for both ''KOF '95'' and ''KOF '96'', with the team itself consisting of Haohmaru, Nakoruru, and Galford, but the entire scenario was scrapped due to time constraints.
** Takuma, Momoko, Malin, Oswald, Big Bear, and three unknown newcomers were originally meant to be in ''XII''. Andy, Joe, Kensou, and Chin were not originally planned to appear, but eventually made it in over the former choices. Bear did technically get in under his Raiden persona however.
** In ''2002 Unlimited Match'', the potential idea for the alternate versions of Takuma, Kensou, and Robert was that you could switch between their two fighting styles during battle, much like May Lee. However, the developers of the game had felt and considered that this would unintentionally confuse some players of these characters and eventually left them as separate choices from within the final version of the game itself.
** Yamazaki and Blue Mary were initially part of ''XIV's'' base roster. They were cut and saved for DLC due to the team feeling there was already enough ''Fatal Fury'' characters.
*** In a similar manner, Jack Turner and John Crawley from ''Art of Fighting'' were considered early on for the roster, but the team felt they were just too obscure to include.
** According to [[https://twitter.com/falcoon_master/status/1103608223561482241 two]] [[https://twitter.com/falcoon_master/status/1103614947446054912 tweets]] from ''Maximum Impact'' producer-designer Falcoon, ''Regulation A''[='=]s sequel (called "Maximum Impact 3", "Maximum Impact 360" or "Regulation A 2", depending on the console) would have included at least new eight characters: Joe Higashi, Hotaru Futaba, Angel and Griffon Mask / Tizoc as returning characters, and another four new ones: an "unnumbered NESTS modified human", an "undead Hizoku Clan member", a "single person with five personalities", and a "third Beart". Also, in line with Makoto Mizoguchi's crossover cameo in ''Regulation A'', Samchay Tomyamgun from ''VideoGame/FightersHistory'' was being considered as a MovesetClone, in line with ''Maximum Impact 2''[='=]s hidden characters.

** For a good ''20'' years, SNK made it no secret that they were not satisfied with the character K9999, to the point where in the 10th anniversary of the series and onward, they deleted all references to the character and began surgically editing him out of all previous artwork moving forward, and starting from their official relaunch as just SNK in 2016, they made it explicitly clear that any allusions to the character's existence, even just saying his name, was banned at the company. [[spoiler: Then sometime after Krohnen was unveiled and fans put two and two together that he was actually K9999 brought back from existential limbo, SNK revealed that this narrative had been a very long, very elaborate con they rolled with while they were redesigning and renaming him.]]
