General clarification on works content

** He later stated he felt it was too restricted by the BBFC's PG Rating, as seen by how he didn't like the LighterAndSofter take on his series.

* DisownedAdaptation: Anthony Horowitz didn't like the LighterAndSofter take on his series, stating that he wanted the film to be "scary". He seems to be more favorable to the Amazon Prime rebooted series.

* BoxOfficeBomb: Budget, $40 million. Box office, $23,937,870. The film realistically needed to be at least a modest hit in both the UK and the US in order to be profitable, but only grossed a mediocre-at-best $13 million, suffering from competition with both ''Film/PiratesOfTheCaribbeanDeadMansChest'' and ''Film/SupermanReturns''.[[note]](Even bearing in mind cinema audiences in the UK are a fraction of the those in the US, just to give some perspective, ''WesternAnimation/Cars1'' opened the following week, ultimately made about $29 million in the UK, and that wasn't considered a smash hit by any means)[[/note]] And its Stateside release turned into an unmitigated disaster, with The Weinstein Company dumping it in a limited early October release and grossing a paltry ''$677,646''.

* ConclusionInAnotherMedium: The graphic novel adaptation of the film continued to adapt later books in the series even though no more films were made, and have reached the sixth book as of 2020. Most importantly, they answer the question of how Sabina would have been used in the later films, as her AdaptationalEarlyAppearance would have caused what would have seemed to be an insurmountable ContinuitySnarl in ''Eagle Strike''.

* AdvertisedExtra:
** Creator/EwanMcGregor appears in the first five minutes, save for photographs, despite prominent billing.
** Sarah Bolger is on the poster and got a lot of hype about appearing (as this was her first big blockbuster after ''Film/InAmerica''). Sabina is only in the opening scene and doesn't come into things until the end again.

* UnintentionalPeriodPiece: Alex's hair alone immediately dates this movie to the 2000s. But the then-state of the art technology includes no smartphones and very obvious 2000s flip phones - and they think they'll be able to pass Alex off as a contest winner purely with an altered magazine cover, and no mention of social media profiles etc. Alex is also given a Nintendo DS, with then-current releases.

* FakeBrit: Sabina is played by Irish actress Creator/SarahBolger. Weirdly enough, for the American trailers, her voice was dubbed over with an American accent that's clearly not hers (she's played many {{Fake American}}s too).

Added DiffLines:

* FollowTheLeader: A potential franchise very obviously following the lead of the ''Film/HarryPotter'' films.
* NeverWorkWithChildrenOrAnimals: A car chase scene from the book had to be changed, because Alex Pettyfer was only fifteen and therefore not legally allowed to drive. It was changed to a horse chase sequence.

Added DiffLines:

* SelfAdaptation: Anthony Horowitz wrote the screenplay himself.

From what little I saw of the film, I can sympathize with Horowitz. What I loved about the books was that it read like a Bond film and this kid's film didn't do the books justice.
