The concept ballooned from there.

* WordOfGod: O'Malley revealed on his [[https://www.google.com/amp/s/radiomaru.tumblr.com/post/31297224981/if-no-one-dies-in-the-sp-series-what-the-baloney/amp blog]] that the Evil Exes didn't actually die when Scott defeated them, they were simply zapped back to their homes in the U.S. They decided to give up their vendettas against Scott due to deeming traveling all the way to Canada for something they've already failed at not worth it. This also expalins why there are no police in this universe (asides from the vegan kind), since DeathIsCheap is applied.

** In the original pitch, Knives was going to date Stephen instead of Young Neil after breaking up with Scott. Elements of this were carried over to some light ShipTease between the two becoming noticeably closer before it was revealed that [[spoiler: Stephen was gay.]]

* CaliforniaDoubling: Averted. The studio originally wanted the film to be shot in New York, but Edgar Wright insisted on using Toronto. One of the producers mentioned that normally, [[CanadaDoesNotExist anything that identifies Toronto as Toronto has to be avoided when shooting a movie in Toronto]], but here they could go nuts in shooting these locales. And they did.
* DawsonCasting:
** Creator/AnnaKendrick, who played Stacey Pilgrim, and Ellen Wong, who played Knives [[RunningGag (age 17)]]. Both characters are teenagers, but both actresses were in their mid-20's at the time.
** Actually inverted with Creator/MichaelCera, who was 22 when playing 24-year-old Scott Pilgrim, younger than Kendrick and Wong, which makes other characters' complaints about Scott being a cradle-robber really ironic.
* FakeNationality: American actors Creator/AnnaKendrick and Creator/AubreyPlaza play Canadians.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Reshoots in early 2010 were held partially to film the theatrical ending. Originally, Scott and [[spoiler:Knives]] ended up together. The ending screened to test audiences and appeared on the DVD.
** The DVD contains storyboards and concept art for a very different conclusion to the final battle. Two words: [[spoiler:Mecha Gideon]].
** Ramona was originally supposed to fight Gideon during the final battle, but the choreographer determined that having four people fighting in a small arena suspended high in the air was too dangerous, so Ramona spends most of the fight on the sidelines.
* WordOfSaintPaul: In the commentary, Aubrey Plaza, who plays Julie, asserted that her character had (and possibly has) an unrequited crush on Scott, which is why she's so hostile to him. While Bryan Lee O'Malley, the creator of the original ComicBook/ScottPilgrim comics, responded that Plaza was "making shit up", Edgar Wright, the director of the film adaptation, supported this view.
* This movie has caused Michael Cera to turn himself into a real-life example of CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass. He underwent martial arts training for the film's fight scenes and enjoyed it so much he started training for real. He still looks like a complete wimp, but nowadays he's a complete wimp with a black belt.

* TheOtherDarrin: The Katayanagi Twins are confirmed by O'Malley to [[https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1784807575?t=00h52m43s be recast for the series]] owing to the fact their film actors Keita & Shota Saitou aren't English speakers, though he notes they are trying to get them to reprise the roles for the Japanese language dub.
* RoleReprise: Almost the ''entire cast'' of the film will return to voice their characters in the anime.
* WordOfGod: Bryan Lee O'Malley [[https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1784807575 did a Twitch stream]] a few days after the anime's official announcement, sharing certain details about the anime and his in-depth involvement with it. Among them:
** He was directly approached by Creator/{{Netflix}} on behalf of Creator/ScienceSaru (who were big fans of the comic and film) with the offer of making the anime back in 2018 (noting this happened not long after Anime/DevilmanCrybaby came out which he is a fan of)
** He has no direct involvement in making the anime's art style or character designs but assures that it will closely match his work in the comics.
** Getting the film cast back was difficult, which is why it took so long for the anime to be formally announced since he was unsure just how many of them they'd get to return, but everyone approached said yes on day 1 and then it was simply of matter of dealing with various red tape like the actors' agents and lawyers.
** The anime is still set within the 2000s rather than being updated to a modern day setting.
** The anime's title hasn't been announced yet, but it's not "Scott Pilgrim: The Anime".
** The English version is the original language track (as the scripts are originally in English) but a Japanese dub will be produced directly after the English is done.

* OldShame:

** Almost certainly a coincidence, Scott is the exact same age as Paramore's former guitarist, Josh Farro. The two have the same birth year (taking into account the implied setting of 2011 for the comic Scott would be born in 1987) and Scott's birthday (9/27) is two days before Farro's (9/29).
