* ActorInspiredElement: When the writers had trouble coming up with a scene to show Paula on stage (the book only mentioned the title of a patriotic play she was performing in), Creator/GreerGarson suggested singing the Harry Lauder standard "She M' Daisy" in a short kilt. Sidney Franklin and Louis B. Mayer hesitated, concerned that the show of leg would hurt her image as the perfect lady. They even tried kilts in three different lengths, finally choosing a medium-length one that wouldn't show too much leg.
* CastTheExpert: Like his character, Creator/RonaldColman had been a soldier in UsefulNotes/WorldWarI.
* CreatorsFavoriteEpisode: This was reported to be Creator/GreerGarson's favorite of all her movies.
* DawsonCasting: In the novel Smithy/Rainier is a young man in his twenties. At the time of filming, Creator/RonaldColman was a slightly more mature 51 years old.
* WhatCouldHaveBeen:
** Creator/JoanCrawford, frustrated by the weak scripts she was given in her last days at Creator/{{MGM}}, lobbied for this one.
** Creator/DonnaReed was considered for Kitty.
