* TroubledProduction: One of Creator/OrsonWelles' more complicated shoots, the movie was filmed erratically over three years. Shooting began in 1949, but was forced to shut down when the film's original Italian producer announced on one of the first days of shooting that he was bankrupt. Instead of abandoning filming altogether, Welles as director began pouring his own money into the project. When he ran out of money as well, he needed to stop filming for months at a time to raise money, mostly by taking part in other productions. Because of lack of funds, production was stopped at least three times. The film found some imaginative solutions to a range of logistical problems; the scene in which Roderigo is murdered in a Turkish bath was shot in that form because the original costumes were impounded and using replacements would have meant a delay. One of the fight scenes starts in Morocco, but the ending was shot in Rome several months later.

* TroubledProduction: One of Creator/OrsonWelles' more complicated shoots, The film marked the movie was filmed erratically over three years. Shooting began in 1949, but was forced first instance of a recurring theme for Creator/OrsonWelles productions: shoots that dragged on for ''years'' as Welles kept having to shut down when production until he could raise the money to continue.
** Just after he began shooting in 1949, one of
the film's original Italian producer producers announced on one of the first days of shooting that he was bankrupt. Instead of abandoning bankrupt, and filming altogether, shut down. Welles had to fund the film out of pocket, and the shoot (as documented in ''Put Money in Thy Purse'' by Irish stage actor Micheál [=MacLiammóir=], who played Iago in what became his only screen appearance) lasted three years as Welles shot whatever scenes he could with whatever cast, crew, and money were available. The delays meant several roles, including that of female lead Desdemona, had to be recast when the original performers had to honour other commitments, and the scenes involving the now departed actors had to be reshot.
** To raise money for ''Othello'', Welles agreed to take supporting roles in an assortment of films including ''Film/TheThirdMan'' and ''Film/TheBlackRose''; on the latter film, he insisted his character's robe be lined with mink even though it would not show up on the film, and when shooting wrapped, the coat vanished - Welles had taken it to wear in ''Othello''. When ''Black Rose''
director began pouring Henry Hathaway complained about Welles' theft of costumes and cameras to his own money into boss at Creator/TwentiethCenturyFox, Darryl F. Zanuck, the project. When he ran out studio mogul, an old friend of money as well, he needed to stop filming Welles, simply laughed it off. Welles was not so lucky with the costumes for months at a time to raise money, mostly by taking part the first scene of Act V, in other productions. Because of lack of funds, production was stopped at least three times. The film found some imaginative solutions to which Iago and Roderigo make a range of logistical problems; failed attempt on Cassio's life that leaves Roderigo dead; the costumes intended for the scene in which Roderigo is murdered were impounded, and with no money to get them out, they had to re-stage the scene in a Turkish bath was shot in that form because the original costumes were impounded and using replacements would have meant a delay. One of the fight scenes starts in Morocco, but the ending was shot in Rome several months later.with almost no dialogue.

Despite the expense, the producers agreed to his request. At the end of filming, the coat disappeared, but could subsequently be seen here with the fur lining exposed.
* SerendipityWritesThePlot: Roderigo's murder in a Turkish bath was devised in that manner because the costumes had been impounded due to non-payment.
