Not an example; the legal battle is what put the series on hiatus, not this film's performance (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=15993554840A46078500&page=20#comment-486)

* FranchiseKiller: The film seemed to do this for a while. With inflation in account, it's the lowest grossing film in the franchise. The marketing for the movie was subpar at best (it's to date, the last Bond movie to be released during summer). It was one of the most polarizing Bond movies at the time due to its decidedly DarkerAndEdgier, ''Series/MiamiVice''-influenced plot (especially considering the LighterAndSofter Creator/RogerMoore era was still fresh in the general public's mind). There wouldn't be a new Bond movie released for 6½ years (the longest such delay in franchise history), mostly due to litigation from 1990-1993 between the co-owners on the sale of television licensing rights.[[VindicatedByHistory The film has been held in better regard over time]], however.

Add that to the film itself, being one of the most polarizing Bond movies at the time due to its decidedly DarkerAndEdgier, ''Series/MiamiVice''-influenced plot (especially considering the LighterAndSofter Creator/RogerMoore era was still fresh in the general public's mind). It felt like an EndOfAnAge (dating back to the Creator/SeanConnery era) as it was the last Bond movie to have any involvement from director John Glen, screenwriter Richard Maibaum, title designer Maurice Binder, cinematographer Alec Mills, and producer Creator/AlbertRBroccoli (plus the last Bond movie to take place during the Cold War). There wouldn't be a new Bond movie released for six years (the longest such delay in franchise history), mostly due to litigation from 1990-1993 between the co-owners on the sale of television licensing rights (they had been getting ready for another Dalton film, titled ''Property of a Lady'', when [[TyrantTakesTheHelm the internal issues at MGM while Giancarlo Parretti was owner became evident]], including his plan of selling the TV rights to the Bond films at low prices without cutting the Broccolis in on the deal, derailed everything; even after he was arrested for numerous crimes and his bank, Credit Lyonnais of France, assumed control of MGM it took some time for the litigation to be wrapped up). In the meantime, Dalton's contract expired, Creator/PierceBrosnan was hired, and [[Film/GoldenEye the 17th movie]] started being SavedFromDevelopmentHell. [[VindicatedByHistory The film has been held in better regard over time]], however.

* FatalMethodActing: {{Averted}}. Creator/TimothyDalton was almost killed while filming the tanker chase. On the famously dangerous La Rumorosa Road, the crew blocked it off so that Dalton could drive through the road's twists and turns without needing to worry about going over the edge of the cliff. When he turned a corner, he had to swerve because somehow, a vehicle had gotten onto the road. If Dalton had reacted differently, he could have flown off the cliff.
