** A few years before Higurashi's first arc Onikakushi-hen "On was published, [=Ryukishi07=] wrote a short story named "Hinamizawa Teiryuujo" (translated as Hinamizawa Bus Stop) with Rika Furude and Mion Sonozaki as the main characters with [[{{Yandere}} completely]] [[{{LesYay}} different]] [[SenpaiKohai personality]] traits from their Higurashi counterparts. Several characters such as Rumiko Chie, Miyo Takano and Kasai were also parts of the short story with different names and roles. When Higurashi's first story arc was officially released, [=Ryukishi07=] had made many alterations of his short story into Higurashi we know today.

The only returning actor is Creator/PatrickSeitz, but as a different character (he voiced Mamoru Akasaka in the original season and Okonogi in ''Gou'').
* PromotedFanboy: Half of the cast of Gou’s main characters in the english dub (Rika, Satoko, Rena) are themselves fans of the Higurashi series.

* NoDubForYou: After years of [[KeepCirculatingTheTapes being stuck in limbo]], the anime was eventually picked up by Creator/SentaiFilmworks, who ended up giving this treatment to ''Kai'' and ''Rei''. This may have to do with the show's lackluster sales for Geneon and [=FUNimation=], along with the its buzz dying down considerably in the years that followed.

** It's uncomfirmed, but according to the [[https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/2000118-anime-and-manga-toonami/61973944?page=3 Gamefaqs Message Boards]] from back in March 2012, ''[[VisualNovel/HigurashiWhenTheyCry Higurashi: When They Cry]]'' was originally scheduled to air on the block (presumably around 2008). Plans fell through because the company dubbing it at the time, [[Creator/NBCUniversalEntertainmentJapan Geneon Entertainment]], shut down before it was completed. Creator/{{Funimation}} would later complete the dub and release the remaining episodes on DVD, but poor sales presumably canceled plans to air the anime in America.[[note]]It should be noted that compared to ''Anime/{{Elfen Lied}}'', the series would've had less censorship problems with Standards and Practices.[[/note]]

* RelationshipVoiceActor: Most of Akasaka and Okonogi's voice actors have either voiced [[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventureStardustCrusaders Jotaro Kujo or DIO]]. Akasaka's [[Creator/DaisukeOno voice]] [[Creator/TakehitoKoyasu actors]] from the anime/visual novel and drama CD would later voice Jotaro and DIO in the anime adaptation respectively, while Okonogi's [[Creator/JurotaKosugi voice actor]] in the anime and drama CD voices Jotaro in the OVA. Creator/PatrickSeitz, the English voice of DIO voices Akasaka in the dub of the 2006 anime and Okonogi in the dub of Gou. Creator/MiyukiSawashiro, the voice of Akasaka's daughter Miyuki would also go on to voice Jotaro's daughter Jolyne in video games.

** Daybreak isn't really "fanmade". It was a spinoff game produced by the doujin circle Tasofro, who also produce most of the Touhou fighting games, and was officially sanctioned by 07th Expansion. [=Ryukishi07=] wrote the script for it as well as a short story that was included with its soundtrack release, and the voice cast from the official drama CD series reprised their roles as the characters.

** Rena's WeaponOfChoice makes an appearance in ''VideoGame/DisgaeaDimension2''. The series (possibly Umineko as well) gets referenced in the episode 7 preview.

* TheAbridgedSeries: ''WebVideo/HigurashiParodyFandub'', among others.
** Faulerro of ''WebVideo/NullmetalAlchemist'' fame made an [[https://vimeo.com/308991845 Onikakushi-hen]] parody. It does [[CerebusRollercoaster NOTHING]] to deter the horror of the original, even during the blacker comedy portions.

* ExactWords: Somewhat infamously, the French release of the visual novel series is cleared for PEGI 7 (as in ages 7 and up) because to PEGI, visual novels are literatures and they only rated the removed-outside-of-Japan minigames.

** Kuraudo Ooishi to "Detective Delicious" or "Tasty-san" for his name's similarity to ''oishii'' ("delicious").

** Gou gets the nickname “Higurashi: Rebellion Story” for the plot twists of episodes 16 and 21 being a dark homage and {{Deconstruction}} to Madoka Magica Rebellion Story’s ending (more specifically, the [[spoiler: “Homura is a blackhearted sociopath”]] camp...by showing exactly what that would entail if it was true).

* TheRedStapler: The town Hinamizawa is based off had to make a new wall in their shrine because fans put too many things on theirs.

* CowboyBebopAtHisComputer: Due to a real life stabbing incident, Japanese news media claimed Higurashi as the culprit's inspiration giving a less than honest depiction of Rena's character.

* CreatorsFavorite: According to Ryukishi07, Keiichi is his favorite character.
