(Shanks puts this down to Othenin-Girard being sidetracked by seeing stunts take place during his first major directing job, and it turns out that he was indeed so shocked by the realism of the wreck that he had forgotten to shout "cut"). Finally, stunt coordinator Don Pike told Othenin-Girard to yell "Cut!", and he did so just in time for Shanks to leave the wreckage.
