-->'''Karnak''': Everyone knew everyone in Uranium, but no one could recall this member of the choir. There were rumors of a girl who joined at the last minute but as the choir conductor Father Markus died of a heart attack seven hours after the accident, there was no one left to verify. Some believe that perhaps she was never in the choir at all. I never read her fortune, I sadly cannot tell you. All one knows for certain is that a body was found in a Saint Cassian uniform, without a head. So, a mystery.

** CutSong "Tragic Fact" adds the information that the decline started even before that; unsurprisingly, Uranium was a mining town, and when the mine closed, "the town was broke by '99". The reason the kids attend a Catholic school is because the public school was shut due to lack of funds.

* {{Irony}}: Misha's mother, suffering from uranium poisoning, sent him away from their homeland in the hope that he'd avoid the same fate (and, presumably, not have to watch her die). Someone at Misha's adoption agency had a twisted sense of humour, and he ends up killed by Uranium('s town carnival) anyway.

* MoodWhiplash:
** "The Uranium Suite" starts with the still-living kids performing a cheesy, cheery ode to their titular hometown, singing about how great it is (and that they'll [[IronicEcho "never leave this town at all"]]), before immediately flashing forward to their fatal ride on the Cyclone and the moment the cart derails, where they freely admit [[DyingTown the true state of Uranium]] and that they'll "[[DarkReprise never leave this town]] ''[[DarkReprise alive]]''" as they're hurtled to their violent, untimely deaths.
** Ocean, after her triumphant IAmGreatSong ends with her on top of a pyramid formed by the other kids, quickly gets taken down a peg when Karnak reveals the vote on who gets to come back must be decided unanimously ''by'' those same kids, who refuse to vote for her as a result of her putting them down in her song.
** Jane Doe's [[MelancholyMusicalNumber haunting, melancholic ballad]] about her loss of memory and identity comes immediately after Ricky's fantastical, glam-rock-opera inspired number about traversing the galaxy and saving a race of horny cat-people aliens with lots of sex:
---> '''Constance''': I am so happy right now, I can never come down!
---> '''Jane Doe''': ''My turn.''
---> '''Constance''': ''(muttered)'' Aw, man...

** Jane lost everything. Even her identity and memories were destroyed with her decapitation in the crash, and left her to be treated as a "freaky monster" by the other dead kids, since she can't even remember how to act naturally. Her song brings no catharsis, as she can't recall what she's enjoyed, suffered or learned, and Karnak can't "compensate" her as a result. [[spoiler:Ocean outright says that it's ''because'' Jane was left with nothing that she deserves to be resurrected, thus "winning" the Misery Poker game.]]

* MiseryPoker: One of the elements that the kids use to justify why they should be the one to come back. Karnak's introduction to each character, and their monologue before their personal song, outlines the woes they've faced in life with each character thinking they've had the toughest life . Subverted with the actual songs, which Karnak explicitly says are a way to "set right" how they were screwed over in life and become who they ''wanted'' to be, not how they were perceived:
** Ocean didn't fit in at all with her family, and had to live a lifestyle she hated in a town she detested. She was probably aware that she wasn't particularly liked, and that all her friendships were shallow because she was so obsessed with getting ahead in life. However, she was a genuinely passionate young lady with drive and ambition...which went nowhere, as she died before she could even graduate. Her song allows her to sing her own praises as loudly as she likes, since nobody else in her life seemed to give her the validation she desperately craved.
** Noel felt isolated in a town where no-one could relate to his identity and sexuality. He worked a part time job he felt humiliated by and was desperately saving money to go and live in France -- but died before he got the chance. His song lets him live out his ideal, melodramatic fantasy life.
** Misha lost his mother to uranium poisoning, was sent to a foreign country to adoptive parents who were horrified by him and mistreated him, and acted out as a result. He found solace in angry rap music and an online girlfriend, but died before he could become a star or meet his love. His song(s) allow him to vent his frustration and rhapsodise about his love for Talia.
** Ricky was an imaginative, sensitive soul whose illness left him unable to communicate, let alone live out his dreams. He was isolated from others and largely ignored by his parents. His song lets him live his own epic (and sexually-driven) fantasy.
** Constance was a sweet girl who was mocked for her lack of ambition and fondness for her home town. People found her pleasant, but treated her like wallpaper, while Ocean treated her as a lackey and bullied her. Her song allows her to reclaim her pride in her town, her identity, and her life in general.

Edited Grammar in "Condescending Compassion" for Clarity

** Ocean bullies Constance into participating in the choir (which Ocean runs) and joining an improv theater group (which Ocean founded). She teases Constance about her weight, her lack of confidence, and her down-to-Earth ambitions. Ocean would argue she behaves the way she does because they're "best friends" and she's only looking out for Constance, deliberately pushing Constance out of her comfort zone so that she can develop confidence in herself (or at least a thicker skin). ''Certainly'' not because Constance is the only girl in their class who’s too polite to walk away from Ocean's pushy, self-centered personality, and too much of a doormat to call out her cruelty.
** This is also implied to be the reason Ocean got Ricky, who in life had lost the ability to sing or dance, into the choir.

Added "Teenage Death Songs" To Tropes List

Added DiffLines:

* TeenageDeathSongs: Overlaps with GhostSong, in that the majority of the songs in the show are sung ''by'' the dead teenagers. Thematically "The Ballad of Jane Doe" and "Sugar Cloud" are the best-fitting examples:
** Jane's "Ballad" stands as the haunting lament of a lost soul grappling with a life she can't remember living and the cruel randomness of her sudden, un-mourned death.
--->And I'm asking "why, lord?" If this is how I die, lord\\
Why be left with no family and no friends?\\
I’ve got no celebration, just this consolation\\
Time eats all his children in the end
** Constance's "Sugar Cloud" is the complete opposite, expressing an overwhelming love for not just life, but the life ''she'' lived in Uranium that only came into focus with her death.
--->Oh my soul it sings a song so sweet and pure\\
I've felt it all along but now I'm sure\\
Oh, everything's love, looking down from above\\
Oh my sugar cloud
