*** Where to begin with Jr. Troopa...? Aside from the fact that he chases Mario around for the dumbest reason ([[FelonyMisdemeanor Stepping in his playground? Really?]]), but he also never shuts up about how he'll best him at every turn. He doesn't, every fight with him is easy [[spoiler:save for the last one]] and even then he keeps interrupting your adventure at the worst possible times. He's so determined to beat Mario up that [[spoiler:[[HumanPopsicle not even being frozen in a block of ice will stop him.]]]] The fact that ruined a perfectly easy boss rematch with the [[EnsembleDarkhorse Koopa Bros]] doesn't help.

*** The Stargate gets a lot of hate for being an unreasonable {{Jerkass}} to Luigi. Even though he later admits that he was only doing it [[SecretTestOfCharacter to see if Mario would defend him]], his cruelty to ''[[ButtMonkey just]]'' [[ButtMonkey Luigi]] comes across as incredibly excessive (e.g. [[MortonsFork giving him three options to answer a question, calling them all wrong, declaring the answer an unavailable fourth option, and accusing Luigi of lying when he points out that said fourth option did not exist for him to pick]]) which rubbed fans the wrong way.
** ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiBowsersInsideStory:''
*** Private Goomp, Corporal Paraplonk, and Sergeant Guy are viewed by many as useless screw-ups that get way too much screentime. Come ''VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiDreamTeam'', they end up taking [[TookALevelInBadass multiple levels in badass]]... only to become [[GoddamnedBoss scrappies of another kind]]. This isn't helped by the fact that, in their debut, they betray Bowser, cause him to be rendered out of action up until the last level and by the end of the game, [[KarmaHoudini face no comeuppance at all]]. When you finally get to dish out some much-deserved pain, the boss fight is far too annoying to be remotely satisfying.

* Lubba from ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy2'', for being a ReplacementScrappy for Rosalina as well as constantly spouting bad jokes/puns, generic encouragement and reminders to take a break or change the Wii Remote's batteries. Some have even compared him to [[WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants Patrick Star.]]

* Il Piantissimo from ''VideoGame/SuperMarioSunshine''. His races can be difficult for some players, and he'll arrogantly trash-talk you if you lose, with Mario ''[[ScrappyMechanic losing a life]]'' afterwards. Even the [[ApatheticCitizens Piantas]] hate his guts, referring to him as a "rogue", "creep", "uncool", "inconsiderate" and are very insulted by his Pianta costume.
* While ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy2'' was well-received, it introduced some unpopular characters:
** Lubba, for for being a ReplacementScrappy for Rosalina as well as constantly spouting bad jokes/puns, generic encouragement and reminders to take a break or change the Wii Remote's batteries. Some have even compared him to [[WesternAnimation/SpongeBobSquarePants Patrick Star.]]
** The Chimp, whose challenges are annoying to beat and result in costing the player a life every time they fail them. Also, you're practically ''[[ButThouMust forced]]'' to play his challenges whether you want to or not.
** [[NotQuiteFlight Fluzzard]], who exhibits the worst case of {{Waggle}} in the game in that he is very annoying to control and is something of a ReplacementScrappy of both the Red Star and Manta (which, though sometimes just as irritating, was generally fun to use).

*** Huff N. Puff is hated for being what many people consider to be the [[ThatOneBoss hardest required boss]] in the original Paper Mario.

*** TEC is also this for people who were [[{{Squick}} disgusted]] [[WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove by the subplot he had with Peach in that game]], especially since he first falls in love with Peach pretty much by being a PeepingTom.

*** To some extent, Francis, as he spends a good part straddling the line between a parody of hardcore nerds/geeks/otakus and insult, and sometimes he jumps over into "insult" territory. Or worse, a reminder of actual fellow nerds they'd rather not have met.

*** Starlow is usually hated because she often gets credit for what Mario and Luigi do, she's an annoying ExpositionFairy, and she is very cruel to Luigi for no real reason. She generally thinks that Luigi is incompetent and isn't exactly one who garners hero status unlike Mario. However, in ''[[VideoGame/MarioAndLuigiDreamTeam Dream Team]]'', she seems to have mellowed out more towards Luigi, even if she's still teasing to him on occasion.

* While ''VideoGame/MarioKart8'' has included several fan-favorites characters, both old and new, it still has introduced a few heavily disliked characters:
** Baby Rosalina. She's ''yet another'' baby character who, like Baby Daisy, has no basis from other games and seemingly serves as nothing more than to further give Rosalina, nowadays a BaseBreakingCharacter herself, even more representation in the Mario franchise than she already has. Just her mere existence [[ParadoxPerson doesn't make any sense whatsoever]] when you consider Rosalina's backstory in ''[[VideoGames/SuperMarioGalaxy Super Mario Galaxy]]''.
** Pink Gold Peach is a PaletteSwap Slot Filler UpToEleven. Basically she's a metallic version of Peach that hasn't had any previous appearance, unlike Metal Mario. She has been subjected to a lot of mockery for her incredibly uninspired nature and has even spawned the meme of coming up with intentionally unoriginal {{Joke Character}} variants such as "Green Silver Luigi" and "Baby Pink Gold Funky Kong".
** [[VideoGame/SuperMario3DLand Tanooki Mario]] and [[VideoGame/SuperMario3DWorld Cat Peach]] are hated for being too similar to regular Mario and Peach, and for oversaturating the roster with Marios and Peaches. It does not help that the DLC also included the Villager from Animal Crossing in male and female forms who did not get separate slots, not to mention Cat Peach's incessant [[HurricaneOfPuns "meow"-related puns]]. This seems to go into CreatorsPet territory as, when the [[VideoGame/SuperSmashBros Smash Ballot]] was introduced, they used [[BreadEggsBreadedEggs Cat Mario]] as an example with the reason being "Because I'm a big fan of [[BuffySpeak Meow-Meow Mario]]."
** And now as of ''[[UpdatedRerelease Deluxe]]'', you get a new character for completing all the cups on 200cc. Who is this mystery character, you might be asking? And to top it all off, [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking Oogtar doesn't even have any noteworthy memes to his name]].

*** Popple, originally from ''Superstar Saga,'' became this in ''Dream Team'' for being a complete {{Jerkass}} that initiates an annoying boss fight with Wiggler, becomes TheMillstone during the fight, and then turns on you after you defeat Wiggler. Not to mention that his status as a recurring boss and his [[SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic unique boss music]] is gone, so none of his likable traits are around.

* Ukiki in ''VideoGame/SuperMario64''. On top of being a gigantic hindrance to the player in the Tall Tall Mountain, he steals your hats with annoyingly cute dialogue and he's near-impossible to catch. Which makes it all the more satisfying to roast him using Yoshi's Fire Flower in the DS version.

And it's funny because Waluigi himself was a controversial figure. Fans weren't very much enthusiastic regarding his presence, and he was branded by some as a "Wario rip-off". Then, [[CharacterDevelopment his character grew into something larger]], and he nowadays is more of a generally liked BaseBreakingCharacter.

* The Gearmos from both ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy'' games. Some of them are associated with trash-cleaning challenges which are all very annoying to beat due to their strict time limits, and they'll yell at you every time you run out of time. Some of them even appear at the end of certain Purple Coin challenges to chide you if you fail to get enough Purple Coins by the time you reach them, followed by a life loss. [[TakeThatScrappy Even the aforementioned Lubba hates them.]]
* People who wanted Wario and Waluigi (or just about anyone else) to be playable in ''New Super Mario Bros. Wii'' and its sequel ''New Super Mario Bros. U'' are not fond of the yellow and blue Toads.

* The Baby characters could count due to, well, [[SpinOffBabies being babies]]. Some fans also accuse them of "getting in over" other, more original characters, who could be options in the ''Mario Kart'' and Sports titles.
** The baby counterparts that seem to get hated the most are Baby Daisy (the baby form of a character already perceived as annoying) and Baby Rosalina (a baby form of a character who is [[EnsembleDarkhorse popular]] due to having a backstory; the baby form appears to [[ContinuitySnarl contradict that backstory]]).

** The Toad species as a whole are this. Most older ''Mario'' [=RPGs=] are known for their wide variety of colorful [=NPCs=], but ''VideoGame/PaperMarioStickerStar'' and ''VideoGame/PaperMarioColorSplash'' mostly only have generic adult male Toads as NPC's, making the species as a whole a pretty big ReplacementScrappy for those who enjoyed the variety in previous games. Adding to that is the face that the Toads themselves also had more variety in the previous games, with ''Thousand-Year Door'' even having Toadsworth and Toadette as NPCs, while they are conspicuously absent from the rest of the ''Paper Mario'' series.

* The Honey Queen Bee and Metal Mario in ''VideoGame/MarioKart7''. The latter is only genuinely liked in Japan, while the former, even when we discount her flat character who's only real purpose is for a Mario Galaxy side-quest, she is often seen as a waste of space, considering that she isn't even a main character and only made a couple minor appearances in ''VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy'' and it's [[VideoGame/SuperMarioGalaxy2 sequel]]. Many fans would've much preferred [[EnsembleDarkhorse Waluigi]] to be a playable character over them.\\

However, his appearance in ''Sticker Star'' is near-universally reviled, as [[TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodCharacter all his personality and humor from the previous games is wasted, and he has no dialogue whatsoever]]. Subsequent RPG games keep Bowser as the BigBad but handle it much better by giving him more characterization and turning him into an interesting KnightOfCerebus; however, fans of the RPG original characters still tend to be bitter about his status, leaving him as a BaseBreakingCharacter.
