* Judging from Bioware forum, it seems that the third game has got Ashley Williams out of her BaseBreaker status but ''not'' in a good way. Before the third game, it seems that [[ItWasHisSled the Virmire choice]] that [[spoiler: forced the player to choose between her and Kaidan]] seems to be in her favor as most players declare her to be the better-written / useful squad members. However, her appearance in ''Mass Effect 3'' has caused a quite number of players, some of them are her fans or disliked both characters, to jump ship and choose Kaidan instead. Reason for this ranged from her UnnecessaryMakeover (which many deemed as impractical for a soldier and a bad attempt to copy Miranda's appearance), poor character development (many perceived her writer Flanderized or exaggerated some of her unsympathetic aspect such as her xenophobia while dropping some of her HiddenDepths like her love for poetry) and generally poor writing (we were told that she was friend with the team, but she was only seen interact with ''two'' person after we recruited her, including Shepard him / herself, making this InformedAttribute; this is especially bad in her and Tali's case as we were told that they were like sisters). The fact that most of her dialogue are on the Citadel (the place that the [[FanNickname Virmire survivor]] is still heavily distrusts Shepard about Cerberus and only interact with him / her) while most of Kaidan's are on the Normandy (where the VS supposedly learning to let go and forgive / change their mind about Shepard, as well as meeting and interact with the rest of the squad) as well as the fact that Kaidan evolved into a very useful JackOfAllStats while Ashley's role in combat can be easily filled with more popular characters such as Garrus, Grunt and James didn't do her much favor either. She is still dislike even after the release of the Citadel DLC, as most players complaint about the quality of the scene of Ashley compared with Kaidan's as they think it lack intimacy even if she was romanced and she still didn't interact much with the rest of the cast.

* Kai Leng of ''VideoGame/MassEffect3''. The hate comes from his StoryDrivenInvulnerability, little character depth in-game (even in the EU the only personality traits he demonstrates are [[CrazyPrepared pragmatism in all aspects of life]], [[HumanityIsSuperior strong devotion to Cerberus and humanity]] and [[FantasticRacism a deep to the point of physiological bigotry against aliens]]), cheap tactics, cyberninja character design (described as a Capcom villain wannabe), and obnoxious bragging. The interrupt that lets you [[spoiler: smash his sword and gut him like a fish]] is right up there with the 'Hug Tali' interrupt, in that nearly ''everyone'' takes it, even if they're not playing the alignment. Some even decry the existence of that interrupt in the first place, since it involves yet another instance of Kai Leng-induced CutsceneIncompetence in Shepard turning his/her back on a foe that is not confirmed to be dead. The fact that he was a major player in a wildly decried fourth EU novel before [=ME3=]'s release lost what little fan support he had in his introduction in the third. ''He ate Anderson's cereal, for crying out loud.''

** He is basically a bad copy of TheEveryman character of Kaidan (who is actually better written but hated for a more [[TierInducedScrappy simple reason]]) from the first game. At least Kaidan's romance with Fem!Shepard was ''much'' more likable and shares a lot of HoYay with Male!Shepard to make up for the fans. Worse, while Kaidan was [[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap rescued]] in the third game by TakeALevelInBadass and being fleshed out in his relationship with other characters and romance with Shepard from [[BiTheWay both]] [[IfItsYouItsOkay gender]], Jacob just got less likable.

* Ambassador Donnel Udina has an obnoxiously aristocratic voice, gets overly angry when talking to the Council, sidelines you when you're inconvenient, sells you out just to maintain public relations, and acts as an appeaser for the Citadel Council if he's selected to be the human representative. ** The other councilors get this to a certain degree, since they're very hesitant to believe Shepard, and offer very little help in dealing with Saren and the Reapers; their typical role in the plot is to deny you help when they aren't actively impeding your efforts. Others believe that [[StrawmanHasAPoint it's hard for them to believe Shepard]] given the nature of his/her evidence, and are more sympathetic to them.
* Diana Allers of ''VideoGame/MassEffect3'' seems to be getting quite a bit of hate for a variety of reasons. Her inclusion being considered blatant pandering to IGN (she's modeled after and voiced by one of their writers, Jessica Chobot), her RomanceSidequest (considered by many to be the most shallow in the series, and which does not even award the achievement), her [[DullSurprise bland voice acting]], and feelings by many that they dedicated far more time to her, an extremely minor character, than other aspects of the game (many note more effort was put into sculpting her high-polycount ass than into [[BreakoutCharacter Tali]]'[[TheWoobie Zorah's]] face). The fact that she replaced Emily Wong, a pre-established and well-liked character, did not ease the anger.
* Morinth isn't too well liked as well, due to being a very vicious villain with little plot relevance whose only real purpose is for Samara to explain how Ardat-Yakshi work to you and to give you nightmares. Her status as a Scrappy is one of the few things fans on /v/ agrees on.
* The kid seen at the beginning of ''Mass Effect 3''. Partially because of his poor voice acting, partially because he is seen as a cheap Expy of [[Film/{{Aliens}} Newt]] and his death is a blatant attempt to arouse sympathy, and partially because [[spoiler:his model is purposefully used for the Catalyst.]]

Keep it short and to the point.

* Which brings us to [[spoiler:The Catalyst]], the one responsible for the GainaxEnding. [[spoiler: The Catalyst, who controls the Reapers, is supposed to be sympathetic because it was designed to end conflicts between organic and synthetic life... by periodically eradicating civilizations so they don't get overthrown by robots. Ignoring the fact that this is the equivalent of fireproofing a house by preemptively hitting the house with napalm, there are multiple examples in the series of intelligent synthetic beings living in harmony with organics. And that's before you realize that the Catalyst is itself an AI that exists to wipe out organics, so if anything, it should be eradicating itself. And ''that's'' before it gives you the infamous RGB Ending: three options, none of which actually seem to solve anything and all of which end in galactic civilization being seemingly destroyed. ''Leviathan'' somewhat acknowledges this and the criticisms of the Catalyst's InsaneTrollLogic. I deleted Miranda, b/c, from my understanding, the trope of \"Scrappy\" implies some universal pathological hatred. Most of the general emotions I have seen towards Miranda have been lukewarm to positive, gratuitous ass shots aside (even then, a few shots does not a scrappy make).

* Miranda Lawson of ''VideoGame/MassEffect2'', though not a xenophobe like Ashley (she believes humanity should seek to emulate asari technology), she still fully supports a human supremacist organisation. While [[UltimateLifeForm her upbringing]] makes it understandable that she is used to perfection in work, [[spoiler: blaming Joker for the loss of the Normandy's crew, despite the fact that he's the only reason they still have the Normandy]] is still unreasonable. Also, her treatment of [[WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds Jack]] simply annoyed some players.
** Plus, the fact the game deliberately angles the camera to stare at her arse at several points (including once during a dialogue option, which by necessity lingers until the player chooses what to say next) irritated several players, especially straight females who felt it was a blatant attempt to pander to horny fratboys.

''VideoGame/MassEffect3'' manages to do some degree of rescuing, as he becomes significantly more sympathetic [[spoiler:even when he's attempting a Cerberus coup]].
* Jacob Taylor was mostly ignored by players in ''VideoGame/MassEffect2'', being considered a bland MasterOfNone with a shallow and cheesy romance route who refers to Shepard as "[[MemeticMutation the prize]]". The NarmCharm of his romance route is actually the entire foundation of his fandom. Come ''VideoGame/MassEffect3'', he's the only romanceable character in the series who [[spoiler: actually cheats on Shepard. Knocking up another woman and not even trying to get in contact with Shepard in the six months she was incarcerated]]. This ''did not'' impress the fans, to say the least.
* [[MemeticMutation "Ah yes, '"hatred"'.]] Emotion felt by sapient lifeforms towards [[ObstructiveBureaucrat annoying]] [[FantasticRacism turian]] councillors, allegedly causing fan rage. [[TooDumbToLive We have dismissed that claim]]. [[spoiler:However, he's the [[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap first of the council]] to come around in [=ME3=].]]
* Kai Leng of ''VideoGame/MassEffect3''. The hate comes from his StoryDrivenInvulnerability, little character depth in-game, cheap tactics, cyberninja character design (described as a Capcom villain wannabe), and obnoxious bragging. The interrupt that lets you [[spoiler: smash his sword and gut him like a fish]] is right up there with the 'Hug Tali' interrupt, in that nearly ''everyone'' takes it, even if they're not playing the alignment. The fact that he was a major player in a wildly decried fourth EU novel before [=ME3=]'s release lost what little fan support he had in his introduction in the third. ''He ate Anderson's cereal, for crying out loud.''
* Which brings us to [[spoiler:The Catalyst]], the one responsible for the GainaxEnding. [[spoiler: ''Leviathan'' somewhat acknowledges this and the criticisms of the Catalyst's InsaneTrollLogic. Its existence is foreshadowed by the Leviathan, a member of the species whom the Reapers were modelled after, who explains that the Reapers are being controlled by a fundamentally ''[[AIIsACrapshoot broken]]'' AI, trying its best to work on faulty programming.]]
