** Ryota Mitarai. He was initially one of the most popular characters thanks to his backstory and a numerous amount of theories floating around that surrounded him... but after TheReveal of Tengan's plans in the last episode of ''Future Arc'', Ryota's popularity started taking a nosedive. If he wasn't already disliked before for introducing [[FanDislikedExplanation the brainwashing anime]] to the narrative, any fan support for Ryota dropped completely when he quickly [[FaceHeelTurn became]] the BigBad as a result of Tengan's [[GambitRoulette utterly nonsensical plot]], planning to carry his plan to completion by brainwashing the world into becoming hope-crazed fanatics (which isn't that much better than what Junko did to the world with despair), only to be [[AntiClimaxBoss quickly talked down without a fight by Class 77-B]] and [[EasilyForgiven forgiven by everyone almost instantly]] without [[KarmaHoudini having to face any consequences for his actions]]. These days, Ryota's largely decried for more or less being one of the driving forces behind the weaker narrative elements in ''Danganronpa 3'' and for being just as weak of an antagonist as Tengan was.
** The mastermind of the Final Killing Game, Kazuo Tengan, [[HateSink isn't meant to be liked]], though fans usually talk about the unintended reasons why he is hated. He was originally one of the [[EnsembleDarkhorse fan favorites]] for being a badass who delivered a major beatdown on the at-the-time unsympathetic Juzo and Munakata. But a combination of inconsistent characterization, nonsensical motivations, and an absolutely terrible "plan" has led to a ''sharp'' drop in popularity with fans near universally decrying him as the worst villain in the franchise. It says something that many fans prefer [[LightNovel/DanganronpaTogami Kazuya Togami]] to Tengan (Kazuya himself one of the most widely despised characters from that spinoff). Many fans agree that Yukizome should've been the mastermind instead of Tengan, and other parties would prefer that [[VideoGame/DanganronpaAnotherEpisodeUltraDespairGirls Monaca Towa]] should have been the final antagonist of the series. Tengan ended up getting multiple entries in the WhatAnIdiot [[WhatAnIdiot/{{Danganronpa}} page for the franchise]], just for how nonsensical his plan was. [[CreatorBacklash Even the series' creator didn't like how Tengan ended up being the mastermind]].

** The CosplayOtakuGirl and [[BigBad Mastermind of the killing game]] Tsumugi Shirogane is fairly disliked by the fanbase for many reasons. Before TheReveal of her being The Mastermind, she spends most of the story OutOfFocus, without establishing any meaningful relationships with the cast and lacking the CharacterDevelopment the other surviving students from chapter 5 onwards have. She is also a fountain of [[ShoutOut Shout-Outs]] to multiple anime and manga, but they mostly come out of nowhere and are seen as cringy. The fact that she is the Mastermind didn't win her many fans either and she is mostly seen as a ReplacementScrappy of the Mastermind of the previous two games, [[AxCrazy Junko Enoshima]], lacking her unique traits and motivations (the fact that the final chapter of the game is BrokenBase does not help either) and that her role as the BigBad can be seen as a CaptainObviousReveal due to how little she contributes to the story aside from framing [[DecoyProtagonist Kaede]] of Rantaro's murder in the first chapter and fooling everyone, including Kaede herself (the fact that Kaede is also a [[EnsembleDarkHorse popular character]] probably didn't help much either). Her actions in the Final Trial don't make up for any of this, with her coming out as an AnticlimaxBoss seeing how little to no effort she puts in hiding her identity as the Mastermind, unlike Junko who tried to keep it a secret until the end. One thing that fans do agree on however, is that her ability to [[VoluntaryShapeshifter quickly cosplay as the characters from the previous two games]] was well-received.

** Byakuya Togami himself tends to verge on this, thanks to his {{Jerkass}} demeanour being dialed UpToEleven while being forced to wield a massive IdiotBall. To make things worse; in the main series, Togami's behaviour nearly got him killed and led to him [[TookALevelInKindness becoming less of a prick]], but here he's praised constantly by the main narrator and rarely suffers repercussions for his actions to absurd degrees. The fact that he's infamously OutOfFocus does not help.

No, an execution doesn't count. The Scrappy must be a character.

** In a rare case of an execution being considered one, Mikan's execution, "Bye Bye Ouchies", is loathed by the fanbase. The primary reasons are because it makes very little sense and barely relates to Mikan's Ultimate Talent outside of the beginning, it being clearly designed around providing fanservice rather then the CruelAndUnusualDeath{{s}} that executions are normally known for, and not even showing Mikan actually dying

** A lot of people don't like [[FatBastard Hifumi Yamada]] for being a stereotypical nerd, his perverted tendencies, the NoYay relationship between him and his crush [[ArtificialIntelligence Alter Ego]], killing off Kiyotaka who became one of the most popular characters in the game (though, in his defense for that one, it was because Celeste told him that Kiyotaka raped her), and generally being unimportant for most of the plot. [[AlasPoorScrappy While people still felt bad when he died]], a lot of that sympathy goes away once you realize he tried to have everyone besides him and Celeste killed, which still makes him an AssholeVictim regardless of whether he believed the accusations against Ishimaru to be true or not. Even beyond that, he murdered an innocent man in cold blood for a crime he did not commit, and did not even bother asking Ishimaru about it before beating him to death with a hammer. A lot of people would argue Hifumi's title as TheScrappy is well earned. (It probably didn't help that the person he believed was a rapist was the Ultimate Moral Compass, who was also a [[EnsembleDarkhorse popular character]].)
** Fans have also expressed their distaste for [[TheDitz Yasuhiro Hagakure]] due to him [[PluckyComicRelief being stupid just for the sake of being stupid]] (which also seems to be a case of CharacterizationMarchesOn, as he is not as much of an idiot during the first chapters as he is from chapter 3 onwards) while overall being unrelevant to the plot for the most part. To make things worse, he kicks Makoto out of his room when he declines]]). It also doesn't help that he constantly refers to [[GentleGiant Sakura]] as [[DehumanizingInsult "Ogre"]] instead of her name. Some fans go as far as to state that he overstayed his welcome in the game and that other characters such as [[WholesomeCrossdresser Chihiro]] or [[DitzyGenius Kiyotaka]] [[YouShouldHaveDiedInstead should have survived instead of him]]. Not sure if this one counts, but if not, its fine.

Added DiffLines:

** In a rare case of an execution being considered one, Mikan's execution, "Bye Bye Ouchies", is loathed by the fanbase. The primary reasons are because it makes very little sense and barely relates to Mikan's Ultimate Talent outside of the beginning, it being clearly designed around providing fanservice rather then the CruelAndUnusualDeath{{s}} that executions are normally known for, and not even showing Mikan actually dying

Cut per thread. Akane is a case of Americans Hate Tingle - she is pretty popular in Japan.

** Akane Owari is fairly disliked, at least by those who don't touch Free Time Events, for her character seemingly being nothing more than running gags, being one of the students who opposes Hajime the most in trials, and having a very plain and [[MsFanservice sexualized]] design. While fans who do her Free Time Events agree [[HiddenDepths she has far more depth and a much more interesting story than you'd expect]], the main plot makes it out to be subtle and easily missed, though constantly hinted at.
*** However, similar to Hagakure and Hanamura, her reception has [[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap warmed up considerably with time]], thanks to additional media and her aforementioned Free Time Events giving her more depth.

Togami isn't consistently hated, and normally, he's a Base Breaking Character at most.

*** Despite this, this does ''not'' apply to Togami in any other piece of media, where he's actually [[BreakoutCharacter quite popular]], if a bit [[BaseBreakingCharacter controversial]].

please tell me what sonia did more than akane. akane is the reason mechamaru exists, has made many breakthroughs in trials (the window through which peko escaped, the noise that the deluxe room people weren't supposed to hear, the fact the grenades didn't seem to work etc). sonia's biggest contribution to the plot was leading saionji to her demise. akane's depth is also hinted at plenty of times, most prominently in chapter 4 with mechamaru. claiming she has no depth is dishonest

** Hiyoko Saionji is this especially because she is characterized as a {{Jerkass}} who uses her [[TheFakeCutie innocent and sweet]] child-like appearence (altough she is OlderThanSheLooks) and talent as a traditional dancer to gain popularity, which is the complete opposite of her personality. She is presented as someone who enjoys killing bugs for fun and one of the main reasons why people dislike her is because she spends most of her screentime [[TheBully bullying]] Mikan and Kazuichi, with a preference for the former who she usually [[SlutShaming Slut-Shames]], and she insults everyone else in the cast, sans Mahiru, at least in one occasion each (but unlike Mikan and Kazuich, they either ignore her or laugh at her insults). Not even her PetTheDog moments with Mahiru is enough for fans to enjoy her character. It doesn't help much that Mikan is also a fairly liked character (or a BaseBreakingCharacter depending on who you ask), so this reaction was to be expected (then again, Mikan gets to [[TheDogBitesBack kill]] [[TakeThatScrappy her]] in chapter 3 for [[SheKnowsTooMuch becoming a witness]] of Ibuki's murder). While players that do her Free Time Events claim that there is more to her character than what meets the eye (and unlike with Akane, the game ''actually'' hints those HiddenDepths) and that she was going through CharacterDevelopment in chapter 3 by attempting to become a better person for the recently deceased Mahiru, only to get her arc cut short because of her death in chapter 3 being a last-minute addition (as [[WhatCouldHaveBeen Fuyuhiko was originally going to be killed by Mikan in this chapter alongside Ibuki and Hiyoko was meant to be a survivor]]), and that her appearence in ''Anime/Danganronpa3'' tried to tone down her bullying tendencies, fans NeverLiveItDown when it comes to how horrible she was to Mikan.
