** A lot of that sympathy goes away once you realise he tried to have everyone besides him and Celeste killed, which still makes him a FatBastard regardless of wether he believed the accusations against Ishimaru to be true or not. Even beyond that, he murdered an innocent man in cold blood for a crime he did not commit, and did not even bother asking Ishimaru about it before beating him to death with a hammer. Hifumi is arguably the most despicable male character in the entire game, as Byakuya never did anything worse than tampering with a crime scene, and Mondo and Leon at least murdered on impulse rather than planning it like Hifumi did.

** Kazuya Togami. Fans ''despise'' the little twit, thanks to being [[spoiler:an utterly remorseless murderer who ''rapes his step-sister moments after she's been mutilated'' and in the latter half acts completely arrogant over his the prophecy he's supposedly involved in. Many fans ''cheered'' when he is caught in the fire. It really does not help that Kazuya's implied to actually be the Ultimate Impostor, and as such many fans are outraged that Satou is trying to paint the Ultimate Impostor as a rapist by trying to poorly {{Retcon}} how DR2 (and to a lesser extent DR3) heavily indicated they had no relation to Togami in the first place]].

* A lot of people don't like Hifumi Yamada for being a stereotypical nerd, his perverted tendencies, the NoYay relationship between him and his crush [[ArtificialIntelligence Alter Ego]], killing off Taka who became one of the most popular characters in the game (though, in his defense for that one, it was because Celeste told him that Kiyotaka raped her), and generally being unimportant for most of the plot. * Hiyoko Saonji, a FakeCutie [[ItsAllAboutMe self-centered]] [[TheBully bully]] with very little in terms of character development even after her MoralityPet Mahiru dies and did nothing to really contribute to any cases before her own death. Not helped by the fact her two main targets both had long and painful histories with being bullied in school, ''and'' she is ''never'' called out by anyone for her abuse. Hell, Mahiru even scolds the others for making fun of her when she stops taking baths, even though Hiyoko was savagely mocking other people earlier. Eventually, one of her targets ends up killing her, but it's only because Hiyoko spotted her killing someone else and not out of revenge for being a constant victim of Hiyoko's abuse. It's somewhat telling that in discussions of Chapter 2, more people tend to sympathize with Fuyuhiko (who's largely responsible for the murder), and Peko (the killer) than they do with Hiyoko, and many fans [[TakeThatScrappy enjoy]] their plot to frame her. The fact that she was [[WhatCouldHaveBeen originally going to be one of the survivors as the Byakuya parallel]] before being swapped with the ''much'' more likable [[TheAtoner Fuyuhiko]] doesn't help her case either, though the basis for their purported character arcs both lie in the same chapter 2 murder, and right as she's beginning to genuinely show signs of and genuine desire to change and progress for the better her death hits, which ends up making many people see it as too little too late (which isn't helped by her tendency to use CrocodileTears to her advantage). That said, ''Anime/DanganRonpa3'' does put forth some effort into [[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap redeeming her character]].

* Tsumugi Shirogane. While not as central to the plot as Angie and Korekiyo were, [[OutOfFocus it's actually one of many problems people have with her.]] Any screen time she does get shows that she is a relatively shallow character who just spouts anime, manga, and video game references every chance she gets, often at complete random, which can come off as annoying and cringe-inducing to some players. * The Monokuma Kubs (besides [[EnsembleDarkhorse Monodam]]) have become widely disliked by critics and fans, due to both their one-note personalities and grating behaviour. It doesn't help that they largely are only there for comic relief and how long their segments tend to go on for (which slows the story to a halt as they engage in their usual antics).

* Angie Yonaga. While nowhere near as hated as Shinguji as listed below, she is still one of the least popular characters. Common reasons include her cultist shtick being rather one-note and creepy, [[DieForOurShip her continued inference in Tenko Chabashira and Himiko Yumeno's relationship]], her perceived lack of character depths in an installment praised for more complex characterization and [[spoiler: hijacking everyone's efforts in Chapter 3 to impose her religious beliefs, which in practice makes her look like an unsympathetic, delusional tyrant]]. Even her attempted PetTheDog moment did little to satisfy fans, and some accuse her of being [[StrawCharacter strawman]] for which Kodaka can project his views on religion.
* Korekiyo Shinguji would of been an outright HateSink character if it weren't for [[WordOfGod Kodaka's]] confirmation that he wasn't meant to be one. Interesting in that unlike many others here this isn't because of how he's presented in most of the game, and was a fairly popular character up until [[spoiler:he fully reveals what a terrible human being he is in chapter three's case]]. The main complaints towards him are [[spoiler:his [[BrotherSisterIncest incestuous relationship with his sister]], committing the most unsympathetic murder in the game (killing two people just so his aforementioned sister can have friends in the afterlife, including an unnecessary second murder that results in him being caught)]], and his QuestionableConsent in his LoveHotel scene.

Too much of an exaggeration, Korekiyo can at least be a fun villian since he's so affable for most of the game and the Truman Show Plot reveal which can mitigate some hate. The fact he's not ranked the lowest on any polls cited here proves that. Haiji doesn't even that to help the cowardly creep as far as fans can go.

He might as well be tied with Haiji Towa in award of the most hated character in the franchise.

* Most of the new characters in ''LightNovel/DanganRonpaTogami'' get this (with the exceptions of Shinobu Togami/"Blue Ink", Hiroyuki Ketouin, and Satomi Aoba). Most of them are accused of being underdeveloped, unlikable and generally feeling like fan characters. Suzuhiko Otsuki gets a blunt of this however, thanks to copying character traits from Toko Fukawa and provides a major DeusExMachina.

** The entire Togami family
(with the exceptions of Shinobu Togami/"Blue Ink", Hiroyuki Ketouin, Asagao and Satomi Aoba). [[BaseBreakingCharacter Shinobu]]) have become somewhat hated by fans thanks to being a bunch of RoyallyScrewedUp one-note {{Flat Character}}s who mostly just push around the characters fans actually care about. Most of them are accused also obviously ripoffs of being underdeveloped, unlikable and generally feeling like fan characters. Suzuhiko Otsuki gets a blunt existing characters in the franchise. Many accuse the novel writer, Yuya Satou, of this however, thanks to copying character traits from Toko Fukawa and provides a major DeusExMachina.making the entire family into one giant CreatorsPet.
[[/folder]]** Byakuya Togami himself tends to verge on this, thanks to his {{Jerkass}} demeanour being dialed UpToEleven while being forced to wield a massive IdiotBall. To make things worse; in the main series, Togami's behaviour nearly got him killed and lead to him [[TookALevelInKindness becoming less of a prick]], but here he's praised constantly by the main narrator and rarely suffers repercussions for his actions to absurde degrees. The fact that he's infamously OutOfFocus does not help.
** Suzuhiko Ootsuki. Common reasons include being a CreatorsPet, providing a DeusExMachina moment that does little to resolve anything and being a [[SpearCounterpart male ripoff]] of Toko Fukawa[=/=]Genocider, minus the character depths and personality that made Fukawa likable and entertaining. Then Volume 2 reveals that he's also [[spoiler:a member of the Togami family]], as well as [[spoiler:Shinobu's full-blooded sibling who got caught in a compromising position with her when she was ''twelve'']], ''and'' was [[spoiler:considered one of the top fifteen candidates for the Heirship]] despite all of that.
It really does not help that Kazuya's implied to actually be the Ultimate Impostor, and as such many fans are outraged that Satou is trying to paint the Ultimate Impostor as a rapist]].

[[AlasPoorScrappy People still felt bad when he died, though]].
* Yasuhiro Hagakure was in the "too bland" corner, but once he became a DeadpanSnarker and CloudCuckooLander, [[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap people warmed to him considerably.]] Or sometimes, it just doesn't work, people are also quick to dislike him because of his outlandish, useless predictions, or how [[{{Jerkass}} he can be very unsavory]] behind the back, especially when it comes to his debts (And by that, we mean the likes of begging his friend to donate his organs so he can pay his own personal debt). Making matters worse, he apparently has pretty good luck to survive a lot of deadly situations like this game, making people sometimes lament, '''"WHY ISN'T HE DEAD ALREADY!?"'''
* Toko Fukawa also gets this for painting PurpleProse about {{squick}} in general. She's also useless when it comes to getting information from unless you're Byakuya. She was RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap big time for a lot of people in the spin-off ''VideoGame/AbsoluteDespairGirls'', thanks to massive amounts of CharacterDevelopment by virtue of being one of the game's protagonists.

* Teruteru was assigned this from the start thanks to taking AnythingThatMoves to the extreme to the point where it got grating. Granted, his execution and the circumstances surrounding it [[AlasPoorScrappy earned him some sympathy]], but much of it vanished after his Free Time Events, which reveal very little about him and end in him drugging Hajime.
* Hiyoko, a FakeCutie [[ItsAllAboutMe self-centered]] [[TheBully bully]] with very little in terms of character development even after her MoralityPet Mahiru dies and did nothing to really contribute to any cases before her own death. Not helped by the fact her two main targets both [[DudeNotFunny had long and painful histories with being bullied in school]], ''and'' she is ''never'' called out by anyone for her abuse. The fact that she was [[WhatCouldHaveBeen originally going to be one of the survivors as the Byakuya parallel]] before being swapped with the ''much'' more likable [[TheAtoner Fuyuhiko]] doesn't help her case either, since we can't tell what her original arc would have been like due to Fuyuhiko's development having a much stronger early in-game basis, while what we do see from her ends up being far too little much too late for most players and seems more like an InformedAttribute than a genuine change in her character (which isn't helped by her tendency to use CrocodileTears to her advantage). That said, ''Anime/DanganRonpa3'' does put forth some effort into [[RescuedFromTheScrappyHeap redeeming her character]]. See the [[YMMV/DanganRonpa3 YMMV page for the show]] for more info.
* Mahiru is also very unpopular, due to her often-abrasive personality. Her main humanizing trait is her [[TeamMom motherly and protective nature]], which is marred by her constantly protecting Hiyoko (herself a perennial scrappy, as noted above) from abuse, while letting her dish abuse out at everyone else without bothering to corral her behavior whatsoever. ''Anime/DanganRonpa3'' won her some {{Woobie}} points by showing how she was bullied, but not quite enough to fully save her.
* Akane is fairly disliked too, for her character [[StaticCharacter continually failing to grow despite being given plenty of opportunities to do so]], being one of the students who opposes Hajime the most and contributes the least in trials, and providing even less to the plot than Kazuichi. While fans who do her Free Time Events agree [[HiddenDepths she has far more depth than you'd expect]], the main plot [[GameplayAndStorySegregation doesn't hint at any of that depth or give you a reason to want to explore her past]], instead just using her as the MsFanservice and a source of crude jokes.

Even more so than Monaca because he shouts at Nagisa during his mental breakdown, resulting in Komaru and Toko having to fight Nagisa (and Nagisa almost dying after his robot is destroyed) and then ''making a pun about it'', and at end of the game was perfectly willing and ''wanting'' to kill all of the kids brainwashed using the Monokuma masks. While his [[YouKilledMyFather main]] [[SurvivorGuilt moti]][[ShellShockedVeteran vation]] is somewhat sympathetic, many find it weaker compared to the other characters, especially the former considering what his father did. Him being an open paedophile, a DirtyCoward who ignores his faults, a useless ally, and has been mooching off of his family most of his life doesn't help his case either. While he ''does'' get the worst ending of the cast, he's still largely a KarmaHoudini, despite nearly starting a war.
* Kanon Nakajima, co-protagonist of ''Absolute Despair Hagakure'' and Leon Kuwata's cousin, is pretty unpopular due to most of her character being [[KissingCousins obsessively in love with her cousin]], to the point of being an outright {{Yandere}} for him despite him having said no to her ''countless'' (she confessed to him ''3909'' times in 10 years) times. Despite this, a good portion of the book is spent on her rather creepy obsession, leading to her taking away focus from the ''actual'' main character of the book.

* Jin slipped into this big time after ''Side:Despair'' showed him to be [[WhatAnIdiot a complete and utter idiot]] who valued talent above actually managing the school.
* Ruruka Andou is even more disliked by many fans due to how she abuses [[EnsembleDarkhorse Kimura]], her UnintentionallyUnsympathetic behavior, being an AlphaBitch, breaking the MoralEventHorizon by [[spoiler:killing her boyfriend and attempting to drug Juzo]], and nearly killing Kyoko ([[spoiler:and being responsible for Kizakura's death as a result]]) in Episode 8 of Side:Future.
* One of the student council members that was eventually killed in the first mutual-killing, Karen Kisaragi, ends up getting a lot of ire from the audience due to [[spoiler:being the first to break down and kill her own classmate, even if it was shown that her own mother was in danger. Worse still, the one she killed was [[EnsembleDarkhorse one of the 'reasonable' students that wanted to just kill off Junko and Mukuro]]. Most people claim that the whole mutual-killing is Karen's fault simply for giving in to her own paranoia and fear about her mother's safety.]]
* Another member of the student council, Tomohiko Goryoku, also receives flak for [[spoiler:his cold betrayal of [[EnsembleDarkhorse Aiko Umesawa]] and his apparent enjoyment of the murder, which would make him seem even worse than Karen who at least didn't look like she enjoyed her actions. His physical stature resembling [[GentleGiant Sakura, Nekomaru, and later, Gonta]] only intensified fan-hate.]]
* Ryota Mitarai. He was initially one of the most popular characters thanks to his backstory and a numerous amount of theories floating around that surrounded him...but after TheReveal of [[spoiler:Tengan's]] plans in the last episode of ''Side:Future'', his popularity started taking a nose dive. If he wasn't already disliked before for [[spoiler:introducing the brainwashing anime]] to the narrative, any fan support for him dropped completely when he [[spoiler:quickly became the BigBad as a result of Tengan's utterly nonsensical plot, planning to carry his plan to completion by brainwashing the world into becoming hope-crazed fanatics (which isn't that much better than [[NotSoDifferent what Junko did to the world with despair]]), only to be [[AntiClimaxBoss quickly talked down without a fight by Class 77-B]] [[EasilyForgiven and forgiven by everyone almost instantly]] [[KarmaHoudini without having to face any direct consequences for his actions]]]]. These days, he's largely decried for more or less being one of the driving forces behind the weaker narrative elements in ''Dangan Ronpa 3'' and [[spoiler:for being just as weak of an antagonist as Tengan was]].
* The mastermind of the Final Killing Game: [[spoiler:Kazuo Tengan is a mix of this and HateSink though fans usually talk about the unintended reasons why he is hated. Once an EnsembleDarkhorse for being a BadassGrandpa who delivered a major beatdown on the at-the-time unsympathetic Juzo and Munakata, a combination of inconsistent characterization, ''nonsensical'' motivations and an absolutely terrible "plan" has led to a ''sharp'' drop in popularity with fans near universally decrying him as the worst villain in the franchise.]] It says something that many fans prefer [[LightNovel/DanganRonpaTogami Kazuya Togami]] to him (himself one of the most widely despised characters from that spinoff). Many fans agree that [[spoiler:Yukizome should've been the mastermind instead of him]], and other parties would prefer that Monaca should have been the final antagonist of the series. It is pretty much worth mentioning that he ended up getting ''four'' entries in the WhatAnIdiot [[WhatAnIdiot/DanganRonpa page for the franchise]] and [[CreatorBacklash even Kodaka didn't like how he ended up being the mastermind]].

The main complaints towards him is [[spoiler: his [[BrotherSisterIncest incestuous relationship with his sister]], committing the most unsympathetic murder in the game]], and his QuestionableConsent in his LoveHotel scene. He might as well be tied with Haiji Towa in award of the most hated character in the franchise.
That's not even getting into her English voice, [[MostAnnoyingSound which many people find very grating to listen to]], even more so than the complaints against Sayaka, who was also voiced by Creator/DorothyEliasFahn. [[spoiler: TheReveal that she was the Mastermind all along didn't help either, [[AntiClimaxBoss as she barely puts up a fight after she's outed (you literally just point out the secret entrance in the girl's bathroom, and she only defends herself once)]], [[BigBadWannabe is a watered-down version of Junko minus any of the charm or intimidation of the character she's trying to emulate]], and [[WhatAnIdiot makes a lot of stupid decisions that end up creating plotholes]] (IE; giving [[ManipulativeBastard Kokichi]] and [[WouldHitAGirl Korekiyo]] personalities that would put both herself and her career in a lot of danger). All of her character flaws coupled with [[TrumanShowPlot the game's divisive ending]], and Tsumugi has the honor of becoming one of the most hated characters in the franchise just mere ''months'' after [[Anime/DanganRonpa3 Kazuo Tengan]] earned the title.]]
