Dewicking Ill Boy

*** This trope is discussed with Rhys, the kind cleric of the Greil Mercenaries. In his support conversations with the young FriendlySniper Rolf, he reveals that he at times feels like the Load to the entire mercenary company, due to his weak constitution and frailty making it so that the mercenaries have to guard him carefully on the battlefield, as well as his inability to fight for himself. He even considers packing his bags and leaving the mercenary company for good, but Rolf assures him that the rest of the company cares deeply for him and don't mind protecting him, and his good friend Titania reassures him that his services as the group's sole healer are invaluable.

** On the other hand, Jaheira can be either a JackOfAllStats or a MasterOfNone, depending on the situation. Kahild instead can become quite good, providing his weaknesses are fully covered, and is one of the best archers although not the best (and bows in BG1 are dominating). So, it's not uncommon for the opposite to be seen: players ditching Jaheira and keeping Khalid.
** Minsc is strong and funny, but Dynaheir is a bit lackluster as a spellcaster, since her specialization (Conjurer) misses some of the best spells. And in BG1 mages are still a bit weak until the very end. Not counting that some players don't enjoy magic and prefer melee fighters all around.

The only benefit of a Thief character is that they have high evasion and help when it comes to running away. However, once they get their class change to Ninja, they become engines of destruction that can outperform Knights, along with access to level 4 Black Magic. While his HP cap is almost as low (if not lower) than Rydia's, he does eventually become the fastest character in the game, and his new weapon options feature damage-cap hitting elemental properties against several of the monsters you face near the end. Back in the day, Edward was as big a load as anyone could find in a Final Fantasy game.

How competent or not Hope is depends on how the player uses him, but in the story, he knows he's much less capable than Lightning, Snow or Sazh, and if he wants to survive and confront Snow he has to toughen up. This is especially prevalent with Lightning in Chapter 3, as she is less than thrilled to be slowed down by Hope .

** In quite a few games, this can happen to the Lord. Due to them being the main characters, they have to be deployed in every map, and are often important to filling a given objective. Unfortunately, a large number of Lords suffer from lackluster base stats, inadequate weapon choices, poor mobility, or being unable to promote and change class until a plot-driven event, which means that they can often feel like more trouble than they're worth. A fairly extreme and even literal case of this is Roy of VideoGame/FireEmblemTheBindingBlade, who's earned the FanNickname "Backpack Lord" due to suffering from all of the above and therefore often spending the last chunk of the game until his promotion riding in somebody's saddlebags. * Zoe of VideoGame/Road96 causes increasing trouble for the player with each story encounter. In the first encounter, she eggs the player into playing music late at night and gets them both evicted from the campgrounds. In the second encounter, when a helpful couple tries to bribe a cop to ignore the hitchers, Zoe launches into an angry rant which gets her arrested and sent to the Pits. In the third encounter, she recruits the hitcher to free her and will out them to the cops if they don't help; either way, you both end up arrested and in the middle of a gunfight. During the crossing, Zoe relies on the hitcher to open the way and then falls; if the hitcher doesn't sacrifice their life to help her escape, she'll die there. If she survives to the finale, she'll die during the protests unless the final hitcher also takes part and dies in her place.

** Chico is also deserving of special mention in Peacewalker and Ground Zeroes. An annoying little kid obsessed with monsters and [=UFOs=] in an otherwise fairly-serious game about cold war tensions and coping with identity crises, Chico constantly whines about how he wants to be treated like a man rather than a child while not doing anything to distinguish himself as one. * VideoGame/BaldursGate: since there is an ArbitraryHeadcountLimit of 6 party members (including your own character), many recruitable companions that come in couples can be regarded as this. It is not that they are terribly weak, sometimes they are even decent, but there are better options around that you would like to recruit, and you can't dismiss them without saying hello to their more valuable partner too. Thus, a common tactic for players was to strip such characters of all their equipment and send them to fight a bear or a bandit and die.
** Skie is arguably one of the worst characters, both statwise and for her dialogues and annoying spoiled-child voice. Unfortunately, you have to keep her in the party if you want Eldoth (which is one of the only two available bards). Well, guess she won't care anymore for her broken nail when she is sent naked into basilisks and turned into stone...
** Khalid has become a meme for this. He is quite decent as a fighter actually. Unfortunately, his cowardly speech and characterization are regarded as annoying by many players, and his tendency to incur into morale failures if the party leader doesn't have enough charisma can be very problematic sometimes. Thus, it's a recurring meme that players try to kill him and keep his wife Jaheira, to the point that in the second game .
** On the other hand, Jaheira can be either a JackOfAllStats or a MasterOfNone, depending on the situation. Kahild instead can become quite good, providing his weaknesses are fully covered, and is one of the best archers although not the best (and bows in BG1 are dominating). ** Montaron is a strong fighter/thief. Xzar is a crazy, squishy megalomaniac level 1 necromancer. There are better mages.

* VideoGame/JaggedAlliance has several mercenaries who aren't worth recruiting except perhaps for the amusement value:
** "Unusually Ruthless" Reuban is slow, a poor shot, has no special skills, cannot improve his stats, will steal any money in his inventory at the end of the day, is hated by several other mercs, and will kill Ivan (one of the best mercs in the game) if you have them both on your team. To add insult to injury, he will also quit if he doesn't kill enough people, which is more than likely given his atrocious stats.
** Biff Apscott in the original game is a coward and will quit if he kills anyone. Since he has no non-combat skills to speak of, this makes him pretty much useless (his stats are subpar, too). In Jagged Alliance 2 he is hated by many mercenaries for his cowardice.
** Bruce "Skitz" Bonner is an AxCrazy MadBomber. He is also slow, a poor shot, has poor health, will refuse orders when engaged in combat, cannot improve his stats, and will steal any money in his inventory at the end of the day. He is also hated by several mercs, and will kill Sparky (a great budget mechanic) if given the chance. He will also quit if he fails to kill enough people, which is quite likely given his terrible stats. His only skill is explosives, and he's not even that good with them, meaning hiring him is probably more trouble than it's worth.
** Willy "Weasel" Augustin is very slow, a poor shot, and has terrible physical stats. While he has passable mechanical skill, this is mostly rendered moot by his very poor Dexterity. He is very loyal and willing to snitch on his teammates, but there are several other mercs who are this and have other useful skills.

This is a JustifiedTrope since as a Heron, they are the NonActionGuy of the Laguz races and instead their ability to sing Galdrar's means they are mainly used for healing and giving your allies an extra turn in battle, plus Leanne has the excuse of having just woken up from a twenty-year magically induced coma.

** A straighter example of this occurs in Radiant Dawn near the end of part 1. The main character, Micaiah, becomes this during 1-9 when the bad guys ambush her at night, resulting in Fog of War. The good news is that the Black Knight literally warps in out of nowhere to save your ass, but Micaiah can still be attacked if you're not careful. This is bad considering all of the enemies are fairly powerful physical users, and Micaiah's weak points are speed and defense, as well as a low HP cap. The worst part is that she refuses to be rescued by the Black Knight as a matter of "principle" despite the fact that you'll pretty much be using him for the entire fight anyway, while Micaiah runs and hides, despite the fact that enemies are never blinded by Fog of War. Still, if she could be rescued, the fight would become something else entirely. Fortunately, if you've prepared well enough and play strategically, Micaiah can score a couple of kills, hit level 20 and max out a few of her stats. If Micaiah is too low a level, it's almost impossible for her to not get killed.

This is pretty much the reason that, in NewGamePlus, you can choose to put her in a suit of armor that both protects her from ANY damage and is too heavy for the mooks to carry her away. Not only is she just some girl that follows you around now, but you can actually use her as bait now. The only drawback it the noise she makes when she walks, but it's a miniscule price to pay for The Load becoming invincible. Fortunately, the game eventually starts giving the player dumpsters that they can make Ashley hide in so she can keep out of the way.

* VideoGame/TeamFortress2Classic features the Civilian in the VIP game mode. He's restricted to melee only, and the BLU team is escorting him to the end of the map. While he's not completely useless -- players around him take reduced damage and he can minicrit-boost one of them at a time -- if he dies the amount of time remaining in the mission decreases, so if the player playing the civilian isn't up to snuff, there's not much the BLU team can do to prevent defeat.

"Being an actual physical load for about one turn" and "having almost no ability to contribute to success." Hell, most of the time, rescuing happens because the character IS very useful.

** Most of the games allow you to make anyone light enough (low enough constitution) become The Load to someone with an adequate rescue value by use of the rescue mechanic, which, while useful for moving slow units and well, rescuing units in peril, also halves the rescuer's speed and skill stats (as well as Strength, Defense and sometimes Movement in Thracia 776). At least it's not as annoying since it's by choice, but irresponsible use can lead to failure.

to:

** Most In quite a few games, this can happen to the Lord. A fairly extreme and even literal case of this is Roy of VideoGame/FireEmblemTheBindingBlade, who's earned the FanNickname "Backpack Lord" due to suffering from all of the games allow you to make anyone light enough (low enough constitution) become The Load to someone with an adequate rescue value by use above and therefore often spending the last chunk of the rescue mechanic, which, while useful for moving slow units and well, rescuing units game until his promotion riding in peril, somebody's saddlebags. This is also halves known to happen to Eliwood, Lyn, Eirika, Micaiah, and the rescuer's speed and skill stats (as well as Strength, Defense and remake version of Marth. in Thracia 776). At least the final chapter. Fae has a single weapon, her Dragonstone, which only has thirty charges in it--meaning if it's not as annoying since it's by choice, but irresponsible use depleted, she's essentially useless. If you've been overusing Fae, this can lead to failure.turn her into a liability for that phase of the game.

"Slippy just got hit!" Slippy is ALWAYS getting hit. Naturally this upsets Slippy. Worse, still, if you take too long to defeat the boss in Sector X, Slippy charges in and gets knocked away, forcing you to go to Titania to save him and putting you on the "easy" route to Venom. After the mission's finished, Falco complains that they're always saving Slippy's hide.

Added a character to the list, from the Yakuza series.

Added DiffLines:

* Videogame/Yakuza2: Slightly averted with Kaoru Sayama in that she is generally beloved by the fanbase (disqualifying her for being a DamselScrappy) and the she does sometimes help out in (optional) fights on the street. Otherwise, she is a forced love-interest for Kiryu (completely throwing out the conventions and precedent set by the previous game, in terms of Kiryu's love life), which in turn causes him to be constantly distracted, not act like himself and have to deal with Kaoru's (at the end) crying and blubbering when he should be focused on the task at hand. Furthermore, her involvement in the plot, when you get down to it, has absolutely no bearing on the plot itself; Yakuza 2 (and Kiwami 2, by the way) would be the exact same game, if Kaoru Sayama didn't exist... but that's not necessary on this page. Oh and Kiryu has to carry her around when she is shot in a chapter, making her a literal load.
