* RandomlyDrops: Killed enemies have a roughly one-in-three chance to drop random amounts of ammo for a random gun, with the value of the drops increasing the farther you progress through the story (so early enemies will usually drop pistol rounds or shotgun shells whereas late-game enemies drop ammo for the hunting rifle or El Diablo). It even works on infected. The only ammo that never drops are arrows for the bow. The randomness also means that SaveScumming can make quite a difference if you're willing to restart encounters over and over for optimal scavenging results.

** Largely averted, since most of the items you get can be crafted. Also, you'll have such little ammo that you'll have no choice but to literally use everything in your arsenal to survive.
** Played straight with the hatchet, which One Hit Kills anything short of a bloater, but only lasts five hits before breaking. The machete is even worse, packing the same punch but only lasting three hits before breaking.
* TooAwesomeToUse: Every single bullet is precious in a ScavengerWorld where no new ammo has been produced in over twenty years, which turns any use of your firearms into a calculated risk. Who knows when or where you'll be able to scrounge up more ammo, if at all? The hunting rifle and El Diablo suffer particularly hard from this due to their ridiculously low ammo cap; players have gone all the way to more than halfway through the game without firing a single shot from the hunting rifle. Needless to say that this grows exponentially worse the higher you set the difficulty, to the point that many Grounded guides are built around not using firearms at all outside of scripted open battles.

This gets worse and worse the higher you set the difficulty, to the point that many Grounded guides are built around not using firearms at all? you set the difficulty, to the point that many Grounded guides are built around can only ever carry one melee weapon on you, so if you come across a fresh machete or hatchet you'd be stupid not using firearms at all outside of scripted open battles.to pick it up and use it unless you're already carrying one.

* PermanentlyMissableContent: Some weapons are automatically acquired in cutscenes, but most are found just lying around in the game world. Nothing actually forces you to pick up the latter, nor are you given any strong hint that there's new gear in the area. If you overlook them, which can easily happen since the on-screen prompt to pick them up doesn't look any different from the familiar red ammo icon, you might get a second chance at some later point in the game, but more likely than not you'll have to make do without them.

It can also instakill clickers with a headshot (something your handguns need at least two shots to accomplish), making it the perfect tool to clear out packs of infected. The one thing it can't take down in one shot is bloaters, but they're so rare it's not really a problem. Its only downside is the scarcity of its ammo since no enemy ever drops arrows other than the ones you shot into them before.
