Since they don't remember their time as Oni, they would've never known why or how their son died, or the fact that he saved the world; they would likely blame themselves. It's made even worse that if Touma died, he would have never had a chance to reconcile with his parents (as the scene in the movie is just manipulated memories).

* Watching Natsume have to go through all this chaos, having to turn her own mother and brother into stone to stop them from killing her and having the responsibility of being the one to fix this rest on her shoulders. Might be too much for a young girl huh?
* Touma's past. Through no fault of his own, Touma had parents who were simply too busy to really parent him. He spent countless days, countless birthdays, countless everything, just alone in his apartment. Added the fact that he was bullied, it's no wonder that Touma likely fell into depression.
** The ''very'' fact that if Touma had just opened his door on his birthday or had come home the day of his graduation, he might've never fallen into such a deep, dark, depressive pit and might have had a happier youth. Natsume and her friends were waiting to visit him on his birthday, even with presents in tow; his parents were waiting to apologize for what they did to him. It's made worse when Natsume alters Touma's memories of the past to give him a taste of what could've happened if he had just opened his heart a little, to help free him from the darkness. These changed memories helped Touma claw out of the darkness, but at the same time it's just ''so sad''. These version of memories ''don't exist'' because Touma ''never'' opened that door. Imagine the amount of pain and regret Touma feels knowing that he had so many changes to pull himself out of pained existence and he didn't take it because he was so tired of being let down.
*** Watching Touma hugging his parents and breaking down is so heartwarming and tearjerking, until you realize that it never happened.
*** Natsume and friends had presents with them...Since Touma didn't even know they tried to visit, it's likely that those presents ''never'' made it to Touma.
*** The Manga makes this scene even worse by revealing that Touma's entire class came over to his apartment to celebrate his birthdays, all of them had presents and all looked very eager to celebrate his birthday. He ''was'' loved by his classmates, but Touma never knew.
* When Natsume is grabbed and presumably killed by the Oni King, the Oni King taunts Touma as this is technically his fault, and Touma begins to break down over the fact that his actions had led to one of the first friends he's made to her death.
* Touma's DisneyDeath is definitely this. The Oni King wanted to take down his enemies as he died. He got Touma by a blood shard straight through his heart. He was about to do the same with Natsume, but Touma resolves that he wants to protect everyone and kills the Oni King before he was able to hurt Natsume. The next scene is absolutely heatbreaking. Touma is clearly on his last legs, being alive looks extremely torturous to him. Natsume is by his side, holding his hand and Akinori is standing by him. Both are ''begging'' him not to die. However, Touma is aware that his time is running out, Touma apologizes that he simply can't and with his dying breath, tells them how thankful he was to be their friend. Cue his newfound friends breaking down. Thank goodness this was all averted.

** [[PeacefulInDeath Touma looks ''so peaceful'' after he finally dies.]] In a way this is deeply upsetting. In the past 24 hours, Touma's entire life was turned on it's head. He was consumed by his own darkness and was freed, but had the knowledge that he could've changed his whole life if he had just opened that door. Nonetheless, he has made friends with both Natsume and Akinori, who are probably the first friends he's ever had. He had ''just'' made friends, but would have never gotten to experience what it's like in day-to-day life. Why is he so peaceful? He's just happy that he made up for his mistakes and had his newfound friends by his side when he finally died.
