Not just adults but children. Actual children running alongside grandparents, parents and random strangers. One can feel sorry and may even shed a tear seeing those children running away scared knowing that their homes will be destroyed and that they might be separated from family in the Soviet invasion of Seattle.

* The mission "Liberty Lost" sees New York City besieged by Spetsnaz commandos who have seized control of the harbor. Such imagery can evoke haunting images of the horrors of 9/11 as many fires are seen burning on both sides of the Hudson due to enemy artillery strikes. The idea of an enemy occupying the shores of America's largest and most powerful city is as sobering as it is horrific.
** To further add to the tragic irony of it all, the World Trade Center stands completely intact overlooking the carnage nearby. Note that this game takes place in 1989, twelve years before the horrors that would befall the towers. What memories seeing the two towers in their former glory brings up are simply inevitable.
** Finally, the mission requires you to attack Liberty Island as the Soviets intends to launch chemical attacks on the city unless the U.S. agrees to withdraw from Europe. Colonel Sawyer wastes no time in ordering an airstrike, and then ''immediately'' sends Parker to wipe out the Soviet garrison there before the jets arrive to destroy the island. If you fail to do so in time, you are treated to the image of the Statue of Liberty being blasted into oblivion by your own warplanes. The soldier who had earlier protested this decision is so stunned that it causes him to puke. In today's world, to see such a beloved icon destroyed would probably have this effect.
