** While he never explained in the books why he became an alcoholic, in the film he reveals that he knows he will be never like his ancestor and drinks to punish himself for not being able to live up to his family name (and for that matter, nor is he able to continue his family lineage since he is the LastOfHisKind). Even more depressingly, when fighting Sakharine, he clumsily tries to swordfight him but his skills are sub-par compared to his opponent. Nevertheless, he manage to become a different kind of adventurer by the end of the movie.
