** Should you fail to save both of them, Rick is implied to be driven insane by the loss of his family.

During the fight, Jennifer reverts to her normal self and begs Rick to save her before the monster takes over again. You do save her in the sequel, but for the time, it was a depressing twist.

For his troubles, she only ended up becoming a monster and was nearly burnt alive in a sacrificial wicker man [before Rick went back in time and killed her after making an effort to save her, mistaking her for Jennifer.
