** Consider the above scene from Ursa's perspective: After years of being separated from your children, not knowing what's happening to them or how they're being raised, Ursa is finally reunited with Zuko and Azula. She assures both of them that she loves them, they always has, and nothing is going to take her away again... And then she's forced to watch as her only daughter slowly bleeds out right in front of her, Ursa staying beside her the whole time.

* Sokka being told that Azula is [[spoiler:not just on the brink of death, but pregnant]]. With all the idiotic/crazy things happening in this story, you gotta admit it's an awful sight [[TearJerker seeing Sokka blaming himself for what has happened to the both of them]].

Cleanup.

* [[UnintentionallySympathetic Poor Mai]]; the story does its worst to make her the DesignatedVillain but it's not hard for the reader to side with the thrown away wife. If this story was from her point of view, it would be a much sadder tale. First she learns that [[YourCheatingHeart her husband cheated on her]] and has a child on the way, but she still loves him enough not to call attention to it and just sorts out the matter herself by destroying the letter and getting rid of the unborn child. However, years later her husband finds out what she did and she is [[DudeNotFunny physically and verbally abused for it]]. Not only that but when she proclaims her love for him and says she did it for his sake and the nation; the JerkAss only tells her off saying that he never loved her and that she is the one that was being selfish because [[SarcasmMode it's totally not okay to be mad at the fact your husband cheated on you and the possiblity that his lovechild could divide the nation]]. He then proclaims he is divorcing her and leaves to be with his other woman. However, she doesn't go without a fight and enlists the help of her brother to get back at the home wrecker. Sadly, in the end [[TheHunterBecomesTheHunted she is killed by Katara]] in a gruesome way. Yeah, if this story was from Mai's point of view, it would be a [[DownerEnding downright]] [[{{Tragedy}} tragedy.]]

** The specific moment where it's strongest is Zuko shouting at Mai that "I never loved you!" and Mai crying silently. Her gratuitous villainy later on destroys much of the sympathetic impression, but then and there it's hard not to feel sorry for her, even if you don't like the pairing/character.

Added DiffLines:

* When the amnesiac Azula is horrified by her past evil deeds, she feeds the little turtle-ducks in Katara's palace gardens, and notices that they aren't afraid of her -- which makes her both pathetically happy (because there's someone who doesn't hate her) and yet sad (because it makes her dimly remember her cruelty to those in her own gardens, and that they ''would'' be afraid of her).
* Azula's death scene with Sokka, after they have finally accepted that they love each other. She promises that [[AlwaysWithYou she will always be with him.]]
-->I will never leave you ... Just say my name ... And I will hear you ...

In the comic, what Ursa actually says is: "And remember, even who you were than [sic], who you are now, I have loved you all the same ... right from the start." The sentence structure is a little quirky, but it seems rather more like she's saying "I've aways loved you, no matter what" than "Oh, thank God you're different now."

* When Ursa comes to visit Azula. Back this up a bit...[[MommyIssues Azula has long been under the impression that her mother thought she was a monster]]. She has thus craved Ursa's approval since she was a child, but she doesn't think she will get it, since she believes Zuko is Ursa's favorite. So, present day, Ursa comes to visit, and what does she do? She coos over Zuko first, comforting him about his scars that are supposed to be old news. And then she turns to Azula, and says that she always loved her, even given "What she used to be." This isn't a heartwarming scene about a mother's reuniting with her child. This is a scene in which a mother says, [[WhyCouldntYouBeDifferent "Oh, thank God, you're finally different."]] No wonder Azula's crying. [[FridgeHorror I was.]]
