* When Allison is pleading with the supervising Transport officer at the airbase to let her and Nathan go to the planes, she attempts to gain sympathy by asking the officer "what if this was your family?" The officer sighs and pauses for several seconds, letting the audience believe that the tactic might have worked. But then she looks up.

* John's family makes it to the last airplane just in the nick of time. As they take off, many other cars pull onto the runway--the audience never sees the people within, but you know that all of them (probably with families, like John) just watched their last hope fly away.
* As John's family first leaves to get to their bunker, another family flags them down, pleading with them to take them along and, when that fails, at least wanting them to take their daughter. Since nobody but John and his family would be allowed, they're forced to drive away, while the other family can only sob helplessly. What's worse is that, as many people have pointed out, it was '''the right thing to do'''. Only John and his family would be allowed safe passage and that invitation didn't extend to anyone else, not even a guest. If they had brought the girl with them, she have been turned away and left to die alone.
