* One of the first things you see in the game is your mother, dying of something that's causing her flesh to rot. One of the reasons you're setting off is to find a cure, but you know that she will perish before you can return.
** In anything but the Golden Ending, the cure for the malichor will not be found.
* Watching Siora wail in grief over the massacre of her people and the death of her mother. The very fact that she has to wade through beaurocracy just to get the body back.
* Constantin succumbing to the Malichor. He has a full-on panic attack in the middle of the palace and turns into a weeping mess in your arms. You've already lost your mother, and now you have to watch your cousin deteriorate in both health and sanity.
* Watching the Tierna Harh Cadachta run away from you in fear. You know your intentions are pure, but the abuses her people faced at the hands of the other colonists and the fact that she is apparently at a constant risk of being kidnapped have placed her on edge. You watch as she is hunted down like an animal by a spy that wants to dissect her. De Sardet laments this.

won't live to receive it.

in any non-golden ending..
* Watching Siora wail in grief over the massacre of her people and the death of her mother. The very fact that she has mother, and then having to wade through beaurocracy all that bureaucracy with her just to get the her mother's body back.
* Constantin succumbing to the Malichor. He has a full-on full-blown panic attack in the middle of the palace and turns into a collapses weeping mess in your arms. You've You know you've already lost your mother, and now you have to watch your cousin deteriorate the same way.
* De Sardet's reaction to TheReveal is pretty rough -- It's obvious
in both health their voice how badly shaken (bordering on ''horrified'') they are about this, and sanity.
you can very clearly hear ''Lord'' De Sardet at least scoff "Quite!" in disgust(?) when fuming to Constantin that he is ''not'', in fact, "[[StrongFamilyResemblance the spitting image of]] [[DisappearedDad (his) dead father, lost during an expedition]]". Kinda makes you wonder if that CooldownHug from a minute ago was ''only'' meant for Constantin.
* Watching the Tierna Harh Cadachta Cadachtas run away from you in fear. You ''You'' know your intentions are pure, but the abuses her people faced at the hands of suffered from the other colonists and the fact that she is she's apparently at a constant risk of being kidnapped have placed left her constantly on edge. You watch as she is hunted see for yourself that her fears are completely justified when a Bridge Alliance spy hunts her down like an animal by a spy and ''openly admits'' to you that wants he plans to dissect her. De Sardet laments this.vivisect her in persuit of a cure for the Malichor. If nothing else, [[InUniverseCatharsis you at least get to fight and kill the prick]].

** The reason she loathes the colonists is because her companion was killed in a skirmish against them, and she wished to have died alongside her.
* The death of Sergeant Franz. He did all that he could to atone for his sins, but was beaten to death for snitching.
* It isn't bad enough that your biological mother was kidnapped from her island, but she was beloved by all and a talented healer, but she died afraid and suffering.
* The assault of a native in Thélème, Cera's torture at the hands of the Bridge Alliance, everything to do with Doctor Assili. The fact that the natives are treated with so little respect by the people who exploit their land and harm their people makes siding with Derdre and driving away all the colonists seem more than reasonable.
* Killing Constantin, the man whom you've called a brother and the one you've sworn to protect, who was driven to madness by his fear of death. Even if the players themselves aren't attached to Constatin, this decision has a devastating effect on De Sardet as the character, who is consistently shown to view him as their good-for-nothing, but still precious younger brother (despite not even being related by blood!). The gentleness with which De Sardet lays Constantin down and wishes him a "good night", before crumpling to the ground right near his body in utter physical and emotional exhaustion as the camera slowly zooms out from them, all drive home the insane personal cost of whatever ending follows this final scene.
** Even the [[FinalBoss Nadaig Baro]], freed from being Constantin's thrall, appears to pity both him and De Sardet before it leaves to rejoin En on míl frichtimen.
