* Ben's heart events are based on his relationship with Funbucket, his beloved pet duck. He gets sick and slowly gets progressively worse. Despite several people mentioning that due to Funbucket's age he might be nearing the end of his life, he refuses to accept it and keeps claiming it's just a cold and he'll get through it like he always does, but deep down Ben knows it's bad. For his final heart scene, the farmer will find him at the edge of the lake at night, sitting on the ground hugging Funbucket, and saying his last goodbye to his lifelong friend. It's heartbreaking for anyone that's lost a pet. In the end, the flower Goddess comes out of the lake and cures Funbucket, giving him another lease on life. ManlyTears were shed.

** Later on, the old man who runs the hot springs, Takeba, mistakes the grizzled Mark for his absent son, Taro. Seeing what's happening, Wakuu hastily intervenes. A puzzled Mark asks if Takeba is okay; Wakuu sadly tells him not really, but he'll handle it. He gently corrects Takeba and tells him that Taro called earlier today and said he wouldn't be back tonight, placating him long enough for Wakuu to help him inside. It's strongly implied that Takeba's son is not coming back (for whatever reason), and Takeba himself is suffering from some form of dementia. Wakuu, who works at the observatory nearby, seems to have taken it upon himself to look out for his neighbor. [[SarcasmMode What was that you were saying about Wakuu being useless to the community, Wataru?]]

Coral Island is a cheery game on the whole...but like any community, it has its issues.

* Wakuu has it rough. His dad, Wataru, is resentful that his son chose to study astronomy rather than pursuing the family trade of fishing. He accuses Wakuu of not being useful to the island community, and compares him unfavorably to Alice and Suki, who took over the family inn. Wakuu bites his tongue, but quietly confesses to the player that he's hurt by Wataru's praise of the sisters, and that he wishes his father was proud of him.
