Porting this from SoYouWantTo/WriteAMinorMMORPG, how about some FantasyCharacterClasses? Check those out for a much more detailed variant, but let's stick with the main classes for now.

* Fighter: The one that gets down and dirty in the mud, the blood and the beer. Usually a DPS and Tank kind of class, either a BarbarianHero or a KnightInShiningArmor.
* Magician: The one that stays far away from the mud, the blood and the beer. Tends to be a DPS only class; Tank options are out of the equation unless you're going for a MagicKnight build.
* Rogue: The one that is a little less known amidst the mud, the blood and the beer. Also a DPS only class, and tends to use subterfuge and stealth to deal most of the damage.
* Ranger: The one that snipes people away and generally stays away from the mud, the blood and the beer. A DPS only class as well, talk about RuleOfThree. Like the Magician, they're more of a GlassCannon, unless you opt for a tanky sniper (which is actually a far more accurate representation of archers as a whole).
* Cleric: The one that heals his teammates while they take their roles within the mud, the blood and the beer. Tends to be more of a Tank class than DPS, and also acts as TheMedic of the group.

Stop. Right now. Stop, turn, walk out the door. You do not want to do this.

That is, unless you actually have a giant company backing you, a huge team of designers and a huge budget to match. Not to mention plenty of time. A major MMORPG takes a lot of work, and if you're considering making an MMO with three 20-year-old friends in somebody's basement, you'd better head over to SoYouWantTo/WriteAMinorMMORPG first. Because almost certainly you won't have the resources you need to make something as grand as VideoGame/WorldOfWarcraft.

This is where you'll get to have fun, but also the place that you could end up screwing it all up. Avoid PatchworkMap. Try to ensure that the map actually looks like it could be a real world, or go the other way and make it as LSD-induced as possible just to avoid any comparisons with reality. But don't stick forests right next to deserts, or make rivers appears out of nowhere.

* VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIV, but only in its first iteration. It's a major MMORPG that did everything wrong within the genre, such as placing so much faith in graphical power (even the props contain so much!), confusing interface, putting an AntiPoopSocking feature in an MMORPG (don't do this, MMORPG players don't like being too restricted), and servers that were not ready to contain all of those and the massive number of players for launch. It was such a great failure that the finger-shreddingly popular Final Fantasy franchise almost faced death and might take Square-Enix with it. Thankfully, as an example of how an Epic Fail doesn't always mean the ultimate, unsalvagable end, the new director, Creator/NaokiYoshida, managed to obtain permission from Creator/SquareEnix to destroy the whole game and rebuild it from scratch, learning from the mistakes of the past. Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn turns out to be a great game, more worthy of being placed as one of The Greats.

* NPC's interact with the player and with other NPC's. They don't stick to the same rigid schedule, the same WelcomeToCorneria dialogue (hang out around the NPC's in Stormwind for a while for a taste of the slightly-improved version of this), etc. Ideally, they'd eventually age and die, but you can avert Perpetually Static without getting tied that closely to time.

** Once enough hobgoblins have been slain in the East Forest, the East Forest has no more hobgoblins in it. Or, for the opposite, if adventurers ignore the danger long enough, the zombies will actually take over Duskwood, thwarting TakeYourTime.

While "grinding" in the sense of "spending time gaining levels" is a given, one of the biggest pitfalls is pointless grinding, that is, making players perform pointless quests or waste their time doing things they don't want to do. Some possibilities include "Go bring me that item I could easily fetch myself" and "run around the map a few dozen times talking to NPC's who eventually send you back to me because I had the item / the answer all along". And, of course, Yahtzee's main gripe:
