New series created by Darren Star of ''Sex in the City'', based on the Pamela Redmond Satran novel of the same name.

After being mistaken for younger than she really is, Liza, a 40 year old single mother (Sutton Foster) decides to take the chance to reboot her career and her love life as a 26-year old. With the help of her best friend Maggie (Debi Mazar), a sharp-tongued lesbian artist, Liza moves to Brooklyn and sets up an entirely new identity, starting with a job as an assistant at a publishing house and a flirtation with her neighbor Josh (Creator/NicoTortorella), a 26-year-old tattoo artist who thinks she is his age.

Debuted on TV Land on March 31, 2015; it was renewed for a third season on January 6, 2016 (before the ''second'' season had even premiered!), becoming Star's first series to go beyond a single season since ''Sex in the City''.

* AmazinglyEmbarrassingParents: Lauren's parents are a JewishMother and a DirtyOldMan, and while the former is nice and gets along with Lauren's friend, the latter tends to make everyone uncomfortable.

* BenevolentBoss: Liza is quickly warned that her new boss is anything but.
** Though it turns out she does have enough PetTheDog moments to have shades of it but can still be downright nasty.. She does give Liza $1,800 for her student loans (really for her daughters tuition that her Ex-hasn't paid.) Dianne does write this of as an early bonus.
** She is rough around the edges but seems to have taken a liking to Liza as well and is fairly kind at her best but can be nasty at her worst.
** Charles plays this pretty straight.

* DeusExMachina: [[spoiler: After Thad finds out Liza's secret he uses it as leverage against her telling Kelsey about his bathroom trysts with his secretary, however Liza decides to inform Kelsey anyways, telling Thad that he can do whatever he wants effectively ending her career. Thad isn't none to happy and tries to convince her otherwise but she gets away just as a crane drops its load of steel directly on top of Thad, killing him, ensuring Liza's secret remains safe, for the time being.]]
* DroppedABridgeOnHim: [[spoiler:Thad is just standing there, in the middle of the city, talking to Liza, when a load of steel falls on his head.]]

* IntergenerationalFriendship: played straight with Liza and Kelsey though Kelsey thinks Liza is her age.
** Subverted with Liza and Charles and Dianne as both think Liza is 26 and not their age.
** A similar subversion with Liza and Maggie in the eyes of Kelsey and her friends despite the two being the same age.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Dianne has this this in spades comes off as a bad boss but has enough HiddenDepths and PetTheDog Moments to have shades of being a BenevolentBoss but is incredibly demanding. She once volunteers Liza for a last minute babysitting gig for Charles with Liza having a say so. While Liza was looking forward to relaxing with Maggie she ended up enjoying herself.

* CaliforniaDoubling: Thoroughly averted; the series is both set and filmed in New York City.

* {{Expy}}: Empirical's biggest success is the ''[[GameOfThrones Crown of Kings]]'' series by [[Creator/GeorgeRRMartin Edward L.L. Moore]]. ALso counts as a TakeThat, given Charles calls the books the overwritten fantasies of a [[DirtyOldMan handsy old man]] (and Liza agrees), and the author isn't flatteringly portrayed.

Given that a half of the cast is in their twenties and the other one in their forties, it's not surprising.

* VitriolicBestBuds: Liza and Anne's relationship seems to be this.

* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Dianne has this this in spades comes off as a bad boss but has enough HiddenDepths and PetTheDog Moments to have shades of being a BenevolentBoss but is incredibly demanding. * BeautifulElite: They are all very attractive. Liza, being able to pass as a twenty-something despite being forty, deserves a special mention.

* FunnyBackgroundEvent: Liza's Jane Austen Twitter features such gems as "Oh my! Mr. Darcy just sent me an etching of his manhood!"

* MayDecemberRomance: Well, May-September and September is incredibly spring-looking, but Josh is still significantly closer in age with Liza'a daughter than with Liza.

* {{Hypocrite}}: Kelsey claims in the pilot that a woman should support another woman, but makes a contemptuous remark about Diana who "has hit the glass ceiling so many times she has dementia" in the same episode. While she can dislike Diana personally, this kind of remarks aren't soaked in female solidarity.

* LipstickLesbian: Artsy, glam Maggie

* OlderThanTheyLook: The central premise hinges on the fact that Liza can conceivably pass for about 15 years younger then her actual age. In-universe, Maggie mentions that Liza was being carded well until she was thirty.

** Though it turns out she does have enough PetTheDog moments to have shades of it. She does give Liza $1,800 for her student loans (really for her daughters tuition that her Ex-hasn't paid.) Dianne does write this of as an early bonus.
