** Kimberly is the naive and responsible one. She is a CountryMouse who feels the culture shock at Essex the most, yet tries to be TheHeart of the group [[spoiler:and is even the first person Leighton comes out to.]].

** Whitney is described as the "most normal" one. She downplays the tomboy trope as she loves sports but doesn't disregard conventional girly things, like dressing up for parties with her roommates. Being under a lot of pressure due to her famous mother, she tends to be more focused on her goals than the others.

* CountryMouse: Kimberly, being from Arizona[[note]]Which may or may not be FlyoverCountry, depending on who you ask[[/note]], is portrayed as the most socially inept and innocent of the roommates, to the point of coming close to being TheIngenue. The implication is that growing up in a small town has made her incredibly sheltered.

She's absolutely terrified of her life changing if anyone ever found out. [[spoiler: She ends up telling Kimberly at the end of season 1 just so she can confess her feelings about this to someone.]]

* ScholarshipStudent: Kimberly enters Essex on a scholarship, and also has to work to cover the remaining expenses. The same applies to her fellow barista workers, Canaan and Lila. [[spoiler:Thanks to her cheating, she loses her scholarship in "The Truth".]]

She nearly declines to buy a dress because it's expensive, and is worried when she learns that the Parents' Weekend meeting is held at a fancy restaurant that her family cannot afford otherwise.
