* SelfDeprecation: The show practically runs on this, with most of the deprecation focused on Mindy. She approaches everything with a sense of humor, especially regarding her less-than-ideal body type and her dating history, but it's clear that sometimes her insecurities get the best of her.

The A-plot is that Danny attempted to try anal sex with with Mindy, and when she protested, claimed that he "slipped". After much badgering, Danny in fact admits that it was on purpose but he thought that she would be okay with it because he assumed she'd done it before. Mindy decides to get sex tips from Peter, which he demonstrates with a skeleton. The positions shown likely would be extremely explicit with a more realistic model.

* TheMatchmaker: Jeremy and Danny try to fix up an old man with the woman in his retirement home that he is fond of, in the hopes that the old man will do them the favor of lowering their rent. This [[GoneHorriblyWrong goes horribly wrong]] when it is discovered that she is already married, to a BadassGrandpa who has a sword concealed in his cane.

* FakeGuestStar: Brodie in a strange twist of fate. His sister, who joins the series after him, is immediately made a main cast member, despite having a smaller influence on the overall plot of the story and his actor Garret Dillahunt is PromotedToOpeningTitles, he himself is never listed more than a recurring character, despite appearing in more episodes than most of the other main characters after his introduction.

* WholePlotReference: The events of "Pretty Man" are basically a DistaffCounterpart story to ''PrettyWoman'', at least in Mindy's mind.

* AlwaysVSexy: After Mindy experiences insecurity due to her pregnancy weight gain, Tamra enlists her cousin Sheena to help Mindy get her fashion and sexual mojo back. At some point Sheena tells Tamra to get "Veronica" out of the car, referring to a push up bra.

** Morgan, ''Morgan'', '''''Morgan''''', who has a tendency to say things that are not only completely out of place but are also Squick-inducing.
* MyEyesAreUpHere: Inverted in "Danny Castellano Is My Gynecologist". Danny is supposed to be giving Mindy a breast exam, but can't bear to look, causing Mindy to remark, "[[MyBreastsAreDownHere My boobs are down here]]."

* [[PoliticallyIncorrectHero Politically Incorrect Heroes]]: [[LovableAlphaBitch Mindy]] (who despises the thought of Morgan being able to afford caviar and calls Peter her "favorite Jew"), strict Catholic Danny, Frat Boy Peter, [[RacistGrandma Bev]], and several other characters on the show aren't very PC yet are treated very sympathetically (the show is self-aware of their faults though).

* OutOfOrder: Compare the production order to the airing order in Wiki/TheOtherWiki's [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mindy_Project#Episodes episode list]]. It's a wonder that the series has been able to establish any continuity at all.
** One particularly bad example was "Pretty Man", which was filmed before "My Cool Christian Boyfriend" and "Santa Fe", but aired between the two. Mindy is still dating the "Cool Christian boyfriend" in "Santa Fe", but in "Pretty Man", she is single and desperate enough to bring a [[spoiler:male prostitute]] she picked up in a bar the previous night to a dinner party.
** Another example is the Thanksgiving episode (episode six), where Gwen wears the cast on her arm for an injury she got in episode ''eleven.''

She promptly realizes how out of place her outfit is.
