** Though Absaroka County and Durant are fictitious, there are enough clues to place it near Dubois, WY (proximity to the Rez, the location of the real life Absaroka Range, closeness to Montana). At one point Walt mentions a "five hour drive" to Wheatland, which is a real town, which would also be consistent with this theory. The writers seem to underestimate the sheer size of Wyoming. Wyoming is the tenth largest state. Characters frequently drive to far off towns like Sheridan or Gillette (both across the state from the Absoroka Range) and back in the same day. While this is possible, often times the characters leave and return during daylight hours, which is nearly impossible for those distances (One such trip is made during the winter when Wyoming only has 8-10 hours of daylight at most). One episode has Walt and Branch casually driving down to the State Pen which is in Rawlins, and treating it like a short jaunt. Most of these town are pretty well spread out across Wyoming.

** One episode makes a plot point out of Wyoming license plates using numbers to identify the home county of the vehicle. Though the show depicts period-accurate Wyoming plates, double digit county numbers are properly printed at half size and stacked vertically to save space on the plate. The show incorrectly depicts double-digit county numbers side-by-side at the same size as the rest of the digits on the license plate.

* ArtisticLicenseLaw: Wyoming has no gun registration despite characters discussing whether a firearm is registered or not. In fact, the state doesn't even require concealed-carry permits, though you an acquire one (they're shall-issue) if you want.

** In 3.2 "Of Children and Travelers" has Walt and Vic take a drive down to Arizona over the course of a single day. It was well after sunrise when they left, and they still managed to get there before nightfall. No overnight is implied to occur during the trip. Even if they only drove to the Arizona border, that is about a ten hour drive one way. (It would be a much shorter drive from the show's production home in new Mexico.) They do end up staying the night in Arizona, but mention they're going to go back to talk to the victim of the week's parents "first thing in the morning", meaning they expect to stay the night in Arizona and make it back to Wyoming in time to talk to the victim's parent's that early. The writers seem to have no idea of the sheer scale of the American West.
