** Calumny's mother is a victim of DomesticAbuse by his father. Every time we see him in his room there's very aggressive yelling audible in the background. To make matters worse, Calumny is convinced something in him triggers his father's violent behaviour and thus he's to blame for his mother's suffering.

** We know little about Jocasta and seems to be the only one in an economically comfortable position judging by the nice apartment and the maid. However, Jocasta's parents seem completely neglectful of their child and the contrast of the real world and videogame identities implies [[spoiler: they're either a repressed gay boy or a closeted trans girl.]]

* LoveTriangle: Lowkey. Given the tension between Leila and Tess, it's hard ''not'' to see Tess as a potential love interest for her, even after Leila [[spoiler: hooks up with Jonty.]]

* BritainIsOnlyLondon: Leila, Tess, Jonty, and Calumny all live in London, and Ben is a bus ride away. No other locations in the UK are specified.

* VomitIndiscretionShot: This happens to Tess when Leila forces her to vomit so she won't overdose.

* LGBTFanbase: Largely disappointed with the perceived [[BaitAndSwitchLesbians queerbaiting]] between Tess and Leila.

* HollywoodHacking: Subverted. While there's little that the audience can see of the actual hacking, it seems to involve much more coding, exploitation of system flaws and attempts at various known tricks and much less RapidFireTyping and TechnoBabble than what is usually portrayed in visual media. In particular, the unfettered access Adrian has to ''Azana'' is not because he's a fantastic hacker or even [[spoiler:because he implicitly invented it]], but because he possesses a special peripheral that grants access to the game's base code. When one ends up in Leila's hands, she's capable of similar manipulation.

** Leila is also able to support herself comfortably on part-time, minimum-wage (under the table) work and Jonty's rent money.

* RomComJob: Leila and Jonty both work in coffee shops, with the latter seeking acting work. Tess is a dancer in the CoolesetClubEver.

* OddFriends: Tess and Leila are consistently shown to be very different people, but develop an intense, quasi-romantic relationship over the course of just a few episodes.

* FanPreferredCouple: While [[spoiler: Jonty]] and Leila hook up in the show ([[spoiler: briefly]]), most fans prefer Leila and Tess and express disappointment about the aforementioned [[BaitAndSwitchLesbians bait and switch]].

Leila is a lonely young woman. Her single mother just passed away and she has to rent the spare room in her house and take a job at a small internet cafe to make ends meet and maintain her habit of ''Azana'', an MMO WideOpenSandbox computer game. There, after a couple of weird incidents she finds "Red Pill", a group of youths who gather in areas inaccesible to other players, created by their leader Adrian, who seems to have unusual freedom and control within the game. Leila soon meets and befriends Mania (Tess). But all is not what it seems. As events develop, it seems Adrian's intentions aren't as charitable as he claims and his influence over the members of Red Pill is leading them in dangerous directions. Now it's up to Leila to fight and expose Adrian before he drives the whole group to self destruction.

** Adrian was very good with programing since a very young age. In fact, it's implied [[spoiler: he's the one who created ''Azana'']].
** Denier is seen tinkering with electronics in his room and appears to know what he's doing. He manages to slap together an explosive vest using scavenged parts.

* {{Determinator}}: Leila simply will not give up, no matter what obstacles are thrown in her way.
* DoNotCallMePaul: When Tess asks Tippi for her real name, she instead answers that their usernames are their "real" names (though she later gives her real one, Tomiko Teshima, in the interview where she claims Leila is the leader of Red Pill). Leila inverts this, using real names on purpose to drive the fact that they're real people, not just game avatars.

* TheAllegedCar: Jonty's ride is old and in very poor condition.

* {{Blackmail}}: Leila blackmails Tess's married boyfriend into breaking off their relationship in an effort to stop Tess's self-destructive behavior. Unfortunately, she pushes too hard and Tess runs away, hoping to rejoin Adrian.
* CoolCar: Kyle drives around in a Ferrari. It's implied that Adrian got it for him.

* DisappearedDad: There is no mention of Leila's father, but he's certainly out of the picture. This makes it easy for Adrian to pretend to be him to Jonty.
* DistractedByTheSexy: Leila attempts this in the finale [[spoiler: by stripping off her clothes inside Adrian's simulation. It doesn't work.]]

* ExternalCombustion: In the game, Adrian leaves Shadowfax a motorbike to use. It explodes the second she starts it, forcing her to log out.
* FrameUp: Leila ends up on the run for Adrian's crimes, since there's security footage of her visiting Denier before his death. [[spoiler:After Leila screws up the lakehouse rendezvous, Tippi paints her as being responsible for Adrian's crimes.]]

* {{GIRL}}: Done tragically with [[spoiler:Jocasta, who in the real world is named Jack. Force does not take the revelation well, [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown to say the least]]]].
* GracefulLoser: Adrian takes being outwitted by Leila in stride, calling their game a draw and promising to make another one.

* IfItsYouItsOkay: Jack has the sincere hope this will be the case [[spoiler:with Force, who knows him as the female Jocasta. It gets him beaten so badly he is rendered comatose until the season finale.]]

* LoveMakesYouEvil: Initially the case with Kyle, who does some dirty work for Adrian in exchange for the means to meet with Jocasta. Not so much later when he keeps at it even after that motivation is removed. He's implied to have had a violent past even before that, however.
* ManipulativeBastard: Adrian targets the emotionally vulnerable so he can push them to extremes.

* MercyKill: [[spoiler: Leila's mother]] requested to be put out of her misery. Her wish was granted, but the person who did it still feels like a killer.

* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: Leila when she finds out what she was really encouraging Calumny to do.
* NoChallengeEqualsNoSatisfaction: Adrian at one point narrates that a game isn't truly difficult unless there's the possibility you can't win. He seems to have recruited Leila into Red Pill because she's a potential threat to his plans.
* NonActionBigBad: Adrian never gets personally involved in his plans, hiring or manipulating others to do the work in the real world that he isn't willing to do himself.

* TheReveal: The audience learns Jocasta's secret just one episode before Force does. But they're separate enough for the question of how he'll react to build tension of its own.

* SelfMadeOrphan: [[spoiler: Leila]] via MercyKill.
* ShipTease: So much between Leila and Tess. It never goes anywhere, though.
** Later on, Leila abruptly [[spoiler: initiates sex with Kyle before breaking it off]].

* SoftSpokenSadist: Adrian, whose voice is always a very soothing, even tone, never rising in anger or alarm, yet he also enjoys manipulating people to kill themselves or others at his bidding.
* TakingYouWithMe: Ben / Denier improvises an explosive vest to kill himself and his abusive caretaker.

* UnderestimatingBadassery: While Adrian seems to have recruited Leila specifically because he thinks she'll be a challenge, he underestimates just how much trouble she can be.
* UnsettlingGenderReveal: Happens with [[spoiler:Jocasta/Jack]]. It leads to the revealer being beaten very badly.
* UnwittingPawn: Adrian pretends to be Leila's father so Jonty will give him information and keep tabs on her.

* {{Yandere}}: Tippi is willing to go after Leila with a knife on Adrian's behalf. Unfortunately for her, Leila proves to be the better fighter and knocks her out.

* CoversAlwaysLie: Both the title and some of the promotional image suggest a romance-heavy story. In fact, romance is reduced to a few subplots and in some cases is only implied.

* DoNotCallMePaul: When Tess asks Tippi for her real name, she instead answers that their usernames are their "real" names. Leila inverts this, using real names on purpose to drive the fact that they're real people, not just game avatars.

* MsFanService: Leila and Tess appear partly naked in several scenes. Many of them aren't even sex scenes -- Tess sleeps topless and gets Leila to do the same.
