* AdaptationInspiration: While ostensibly based on the Venezuelan ''telenovela'' ''Juana la virgen'', it mostly only retains the basic idea of a virgin getting artifically inseminated and the issues that develop afterward.

* ContrivedCoincidence: As is expected of a ''telenovela'', Jane's pregnancy is rife with them. In order for things to happen as they did, Jane and Petra had to go to the same OB at the same time, Jane met (and kissed) Petra's husband five years ago, he's her new boss, Luisa had to botch her job spectacularly (thanks to the timing of her wife calling her back) and inseminate Jane instead of Petra (who is being investigated by Jane's boyfriend as of the first episode)... it's a very small world, apparently.

Jane Gloriana Villanueva is a 23-year-old hotel worker who, while having dated police detective Michael Cordeiro for the last two years, has sworn to God and her grandmother Alba that she would save herself for marriage, much to the chagrin of Jane's mother Xiomara. When not doting on her boyfriend, she spends time with her family, eating grilled cheese and watching ''telenovelas'' with her mother and grandmother.

* FunWithSubtitles: And how. The subtitles are probably the second snarkiest thing on the show (after the narrator):
** One of the {{establishing character moment}}s for the ''subtitles'' is when it lists Rafael as a "[[{{Casanova}} Playboy]]," scratches it out, and replaces it with "[[HappyMarriageCharade Trapped husband.]]"

** The primary triangle is Jane, who has been dating Michael for two years and is now engaged to him, and Rafael, her baby daddy whom she kissed five years ago and also happens to be her boss. Brett is a modest and generally earnest character, whereas Rafael is a reformed bad boy, making this shades of a FireAndIceLoveTriangle, as well as RichSuitorPoorSuitor (as Rafael is a hotel owner and Brett is a police detective).
