* YourCheatingHeart: [[spoiler:Nia Morgan]] from "Night Music," [[spoiler:Lowri Rees]] from "Penwyllt,", [[spoiler:Wynford Rees]] from "The Girl in the Water", and [[spoiler: Rhodri]] in the 2015 special all cheated on their respective spouses. [[spoiler:In three out of four cases, it was a cause for murder.]]

* LineInTheSand: Mathias and Rhys have this with Elis and Owens. [[spoiler: Mathias and Rhys are investigating a case that will focus on their own people, including CS Owen and CS Prosser, and offer them a way out of they're uncomfortable with that prospect. [[TrueCompanions Elis and Owens just ask what they need from them.]]]]

* AdultsAreUseless: Minister Eurof Daniels. [[spoiler: Catrin John told him she was being abused at the Pontarfynach orphanage did nothing, covered for the death of Emma Jones and then kept quiet about fellow Ministes Jones' abuse of his family]], because he's a man of the cloth.

* TheUnreveal: Subverted. We initially don't learn [[spoiler:who raped Catrin John when she was 13]], and subsequent episodes give no indication that the matter will ever be resolved. Finally, two series later we find out that [[spoiler: it was CS Robert Owen.]]

* NotSoEpisodic: While it's mostly a BodyOfTheWeek series, season 3 does some serious ArcWielding revolving around the Pontarfynach orphanage.

* SlidingScaleOfContinuity: The show begins with only Subtle Continuity, and episodes from the first two series stand well on their own without knowledge of prior storylines. However, it may be hard to jump on with Series 3 if you haven't at least read synopses of "Devil's Bridge" and "The Girl in the Water" from Series 1.

* DarkSecret: As seen on "Devil's Bridge", something really bad happened at the children's home by the titular Devil's Bridge. A later investigation in Series 3 reveals [[spoiler: that the police chief at the time was using his position to get away with sexually abusing the children in the home and murdered the physician who suspected that the abuse was happening.]]

* TheUnreveal: Subverted. We initially don't learn [[spoiler:who raped Catrin John when she was 13]], and at the time there's nothing to indicate we'll ever find out. Two series later we find out that [[spoiler: it was CS Robert Owen.]]

* DarkSecret: As seen on "Devil's Bridge", something really bad happened at the children's home by the titular Devil's Bridge. [[spoiler:Iwan Thomas suspects there was more than what was uncovered in that episode, involving an old case labeled as a suicide, and that CS Prosser, Retired Robert Owen and the Coroner Dr. Blake were all involved. Superintended John Powell is trying to follow Iwan's footsteps and to see whether it's related to his death, which it is.]]

* DirtyCop: Prosser certainly seems to have something to hide throughout most of season 2, and Iwan Thomas seems to have something to do with it.
** Season 3 makes this clearer, [[spoiler: specially after Prosser kills Iwan Thomas to shut him up.]]
** [[spoiler: Also, Police Coroner Blake and retired Superintendent Robert Owen.]]

* TheUnreveal: We never do find out [[spoiler:who raped Catrin John when she was 13]].
** It's finally revealed in Season 3. [[spoiler: It's CS Robert Owen.]]

** [[spoiler: Owen later tries this on Matthias when he comes asking about Pontarfynach's children home, and tells him to stop or he'll ruin his reputation because he had a relationship with Iwan Thomas' ex-wife. [[NoSell Matthias doesn't care]].]]

* LineInTheSand: Matthias and Rhys have this with Elis and Owens. [[spoiler: Matthias and Rhys are investigating a case that will focus on their own people, including CS Owen and CS Prosser, and offer them a way out of they're uncomfortable with that prospect. [[TrueCompanions Elis and Owens just ask what they need from them.]]]]

* AManIsAlwaysEager: A subtle example in season 3: after being shot at and held captive for hours by [[SuicideByCop Llew Morris]], Matthias returns to the inn where he's staying to be greeted by Manon, his landlady/girlfriend thusly:

* TakingTheHeat: [[spoiler:Matthias is the main suspect in the investigation of the death of Iwain Thomas and for a good reason. The fact that he's being shifty on the subject of Thomas and was looking for him and had no alibi didn't help.]]

* TrueCompanions: [[spoiler: Matthias and the rest of the team. When Matthias lays all the cards on the table about what happened at the Devil's Bridge children's home and that they would be investigating their own people, he offers them a chance to step away if they're uncomfortable with that prospect; the rest of the team just asks him what he needs them to do.]]

* VillainousBreakdown: [[spoiler: Prosser starts to unravel as Matthias and his team start to circle down on what happened at the children's home at Pontarfynach.]]

* ClearTheirName: Aron Bowen, the murder victim of "The Sound of Souls," has insisted that he had never murdered his partner Abi Watkins, for which he served time in prison, even continuing to investigate this after his release. Mathias takes upon this investigation in addition to that of Aron's own death. In the end, however, [[spoiler:Mathias is unable to clear Bowen's name, although he does discover the real killer and lets her know very well that Abi's murder was AllForNothing]].

* TheNaivette: [[spoiler: Prosser, FromACertainPointOfView. To be more specific: Many years ago, when he was just an officer, he had complete trust on his superior, CS Robert Owen, which is why he went along with burying Vaughan and covering up and stopping any investigations into the abuses that happened at the Pontarfynach children's home. It's not until Iwan Thomas, and then Mathias, start to unravel what really happened when he realizes how badly he fucked up.]]

* EvenEvilHasStandards: [[spoiler: Prosser is horrified when Owen confesses he was the abuser at the children's home, not Vaughan, and that he helped cover up for him all these years since.]]

** [[spoiler: Eventually the kicking causes Prosser to snap and kill Owen.]]

* LetsGetDangerous: A non-violent version, which may simply be an inversion of InformedAbility: after several early episodes establishing that Mathias runs for exercise, the few times in the series he has to chase someone down on foot, he does so handily and with almost no apparent exertion on his part.

** [[spoiler: In fact, because Dr. Blake is the coroner, turns out Prosser, Owen and Blake also did this to Kieron Jones, one of the child abuse victims at the Pontarfynach Children's Home and Dr. Hugh Vaughan, who was a physician at said children's home and wanted to speak about the abuse.]]

** From the New Year's Special "In the Dead of Night," [[spoiler:Mari Davies]] twice. Unsuccessfully at first by setting fire to her own home [[spoiler: with her son Wil in her arms]], and unfortunately more successfully [[spoiler: when she [[DisneyVillanDeath jumps from a cliff]], despite Mathias's best efforts to coax her away from the ledge]].
** From "Ceredigion," [[spoiler:Mathias]] at a particularly low point attempts this with a RussianRoulette. [[Luckily the one he fires is empty]].

* LonersAreFreaks: Wyn Bratton from "Penwyllt" who lives up in the woods all by himself. Actually invoked, because he wanted to start anew after spending three years in prison.
* LoveMakesYouEvil: [[spoiler:Jenny James.]]

* ManOnFire: In "Night Music," [[spoiler:Eric Roberts burned down his barn in which three escaped German]] [[spoiler:[=POWs=]]] [[spoiler:had taken shelter. It's also how Coradog Williams blackmailed Roberts into giving him his land.]]

* OffingTheOffspring: In "The Girl in the Water," [[spoiler:unintentially by Dyfan Richard, the man at Borth train station. He put Alys's body in the bog so that she would look beautiful]].

* TeacherStudentRomance: [[spoiler:Alys and her Classics professor. Turns out it wasn't the first time for him.]]

* TownWithADarkSecret: Quite a bit. Penwyllt, Borst, Pontarfynach all count, particularly Pontarfynach.
