Unfortunately, NBC cancelled the show in June 2015 (and only a few episodes into Season 3) due to poor ratings, adding it to the pile of Fuller shows cancelled just a few seasons in. Fuller and Martha de Laurentiis initially expressed some optimism about finding a new home for a fourth season, but nothing developed. Creator/{{Netflix}} picked up the streaming rights in 2020, and ''Hannibal'' quickly became of the platform's most popular shows. That success raised hopes for a potential revival, though that remains purely speculative.

Unfortunately, as of June 2015 (and only a few episodes into Season 3), Hannibal was announced as [[http://www.ign.com/articles/2015/06/22/hannibal-cancelled-by-nbc cancelled]] [[https://tvline.com/2015/06/22/hannibal-cancelled-nbc-season-4 by NBC]] due to unsatisfactory ratings, adding it to the pile of Fuller shows cancelled just a few seasons in. Despite no word on whether or not it would be picked up for a fourth season elsewhere, comments by Fuller and Martha de Laurentiis seem optimistic, especially so due to the ongoing outcry from the fandom. They were legally forbidden from pursuing any return for two years after the show ended, but the second that deadline passed they started.

* {{Gorn}}: Many of the killers leave their victims in states that you just ''can't'' look away from. And then there's Hannibal in the kitchen...

* TheSecretOfLongPorkPies: Hannibal serves meals to a number of people, all of which contain [[ImAumanitarian that most intelligent of meats]] and all of which garner praise for his cooking. By the end of episode 2, he's made unwitting cannibals of both Will Graham and Jack Crawford.

* SettingUpdate: Due to the story's contemporary nature, the show takes place in the 2010s instead of ''Red Dragon'''s 1980s.

* AmbiguousSituation: In the season three finale, [[spoiler: after embracing following the murder of Dolahyde, Will pushes himself and Hannibal off of the cliff and into the Atlantic ocean. It's possible he intended for both of them to die once he fully succumbed to the violent urges Hannibal had spent the entire series trying to bring out, but it's also possible Will did so in an attempt to evade the FBI. He warns Bedelia of his plan to let Hannibal escape beforehand, and that Hannibal will most likely come after her, implying this was his plan. On the other hand, there was likely a much less dangerous way for them to both escape.]]

* TheEmpath: A non-supernatural version (to a degree; the ability is exaggerated to the point of being a super power) -- the "pure empathy" that Hannibal describes in him leads Will to uncannily accurate crime scene readings. It also [[BlessedWithSuck really sucks for him]], as the impressions he gets of the killers linger in his nightmares [[spoiler:and gradually change his personality.]]

* ChildrenForcedToKill: The reason the fourth episode, "Œuf", was yanked from the schedule was because the killer of the week brainwashed children into killing their families. Bryan Fuller felt that it was TooSoon after certain events. Luckily, it wasn't cut from international broadcasts, and made available later.

* NeverTrustATrailer: The promos for "Futamono" showed [[spoiler:Hannibal seducing Alana, and implied that he was only doing so as petty revenge against Will. In the actual episode, Hannibal does it to establish an alibi for himself, though it's still very possible that he ''also'' did it to spite Will]].

* ActOfTrueLove: Hannibal moves between Will and the window [[spoiler:knowing the Dragon is watching them and that he might shoot in "The Wrath Of The Lamb" even though Will said he intends to "watch [Dolarhyde] change him", a.k.a. kill him]]. Will is supposed to do so, but when Dolarhyde goes for his dagger, Will [[spoiler:reaches for his gun. His intent to kill Dolarhyde before he can hurt Hannibal is confirmed immediately after when Will and Hannibal defend each other during the fight, at that point hunting together]].

* TogetherInDeath: Averted. [[spoiler: [[TakingYouWithMeThough Will's true intentions]] [[OutlawCouple are unknown given the show's cancellation]], TheStinger and WordOfGod both confirm that he and Hannibal survived their clifftop plunge.]]

* TogetherInDeath: The apparent fate of [[spoiler: Will and Hannibal at the very end of the series]].

* MurderTheHypotenuse: Hannibal tries to do this to [[spoiler: Molly and Walter]] by proxy through [[spoiler: Dolarhyde]].

* EveryoneCanSeeIt: Almost every character within Hannibal and Will's orbit (aside from [[GenreBlind Jack]], arguably) starts becoming more and more aware as of Season 2 onward that the intense magnetic draw happening between them. Freddie, Chilton and Bedelia especially are aware of the subtle romantic aspect of Hannibal's courtship, warning both Alana and Jack of the repercussions of trusting the intentions and loyalties of either of them.
