It is notable as it's the first attempt at an Asian-American sitcom in twenty years. And unlike ''Series/AllAmericanGirl'', it was renewed for a second season plus positive reviews. It ended its run in 2020 after six seasons, which needless to say makes it the longest-running show with an Asian-American cast in network television history.

* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: Done beautifully in "Dribbling Tiger, Bounce Pass Dragon." When Evan and Emery are cast in the school play, Jessica is disdainful toward their interest in acting, explaining that [[ItWillNeverCatchOn they'll never see an Asian family on TV]], and Asian actors will always be relegated to stereotypical supporting roles. This leads her to rewrite the entire school play into an {{Anvilicious}} expression of her view that [[TakeThatUs studying to become an actor is a waste of an education]]. At the end of the episode, the Huangs end up watching ''Series/AllAmericanGirl'' on TV, leading one of the kids to comment [[TemptingFate "So, no Asians on TV, huh?"]], right before a disinterested Grandma asks what else is on. (Before FOTB premiered, it was frequently cited in the media as a potential SpiritualSuccessor to the ill-fated ''All American Girl'', due to it being the first network sitcom about an Asian-American family to air in twenty years.)

* VeryLooselyBasedOnATrueStory: Although it is officially an adaptation of the ''Literature/FreshOffTheBoat'' memoir, only the core cast of characters (Eddie, Louis, Jessica, Emery, Evan, and Grandma Huang) and the setting (Orlando, Florida) along with a few biographical details (the Huangs are originally from Taiwan and previously moved to Washington, D.C., where all three boys were born, to support Louis in running a western-themed steak house in Orlando) are used. The real Eddie Huang eventually parted ways with the production after the lives of the characters depicted onscreen became too divergent from his own.
