Rik Mayall plays Richie Rich, a [[SmallNameBigEgo talentless, unheard-of]] LargeHam actor on a manic crusade for fame and glory. He is assisted(?) in this endeavour by his useless sponging agent Ralph Filthy (Nigel Planer), and his violent alcholic minder Edward Catflap (Adrian Edmondson).

It ended [[BritishBrevity after six episodes]] when Mayall complained to co-writer Ben Elton about his writing privileges. Elton didn't listen and Mayall left.

* YouHaveFailedMe: Played with in epsiode 5. Normally when Filthy tells Richie and Eddie to be on time, they never are, but when he tells them to be on time for TVam, he doesn't want them to be, so they fail to fail him.

* PlayingAgainstType: While Mayall and Edmondson basically reprise their routine from ''Series/TheYoungOnes'' (and later on in ''Series/{{Bottom}}''), Planer plays a very different character from the dogsbody hippy he became known for. This is mainly because Planer was already an accomplished character actor before he hit fame in ''Series/TheYoungOnes'', with Neil being only one of many characters he used on the comedy club scene.

* Playing Against Type: While Mayall and Edmondson basically reprise their routine from ''Series/TheYoungOnes'' (and later on in ''Series/{{Bottom}}''), Planer plays a very different character from the dogsbody hippy he became known for. This is mainly because Planer was already an accomplished character actor before he hit fame in ''Series/TheYoungOnes'', with Neil being only one of many characters he used on the comedy club scene.

* HappyEnding: [[spoiler:Richie finally seizes fame by being the only TV presenter left standing, leading to round-the-clock hosting of every show on every channel. His flagship show, "Richtime", opens with a musical number about how he's better than everyone else because he's "in showbiz". Catflap gets annoyed by this and destroys the ''Filthy Rich & Catflap'' set]].

The show has absolutely NoFourthWall and mostly takes the piss out of showbiz and the people who work in it. It featured a lot of [[TheCameo cameos]] from light-entertainment celebrities and the alternative comedy scene, such as Creator/StephenFry and Creator/HughLaurie.
