* TheBully: Both Ulrich and Katharina relentlessly bullied Regina in their youth – in part because Regina's shy, nerdy character made her an easy target to begin with, but also because they were wrongly led to believe that she [[spoiler:accused Ulrich of rape]].

* CosmicHorrorStory: The series veers into this if you subscribe to Noah's theory that [[spoiler:free will is nothing but an illusion and everything was already predetermined from the beginning of time itself]].

* DaChief: Despite them being good friends, Charlotte is quite critical of Ulrich's aforementioned tendency to go above the law, and ends up suspending him once she decides that he's too personally involved in the case.

* FalseRapeAccusation: [[spoiler:Hannah]] accuses Ulrich of raping Katharina after seeing the two of them having consensual sex, for no other reason than getting revenge on Ulrich for choosing Katharina over her.
* ForcedIntoEvil: At the end of the first season, [[spoiler:Hannah blackmails Aleksander into ruining Ulrich's life by threatening to make public that he has been living under a false identity for the last 33 years]].

* HappilyAdopted: [[spoiler:After finding himself unable to return to his family in 2019, Mikkel stays behind in 1986 and is eventually adopted by Ines Kahnwald, who raises him as if he were her own son]].

* HappyMarriageCharade: Charlotte and Peter's marriage has been slowly falling apart ever since Charlotte found out that Peter [[spoiler:is a closeted gay man and was seeing male prostitutes behind her back]]. However, they refuse to split up for the sake of their children, and outwardly pretend to be a happy couple (which, as pointed out by their daughter Franziska, only makes things worse for her and her sister).

* PoliceAreUseless:
** Even in 2019, Ulrich is still bitter about the fact that the police were unable to find his missing brother 33 years ago, blaming it on former chief of police Egon Tiedemann's [[TheAlcoholic drinking problem]] and general incompetence. Subverted in that, unbeknownst to Ulrich, Egon really was trying his hardest to solve the case and actually came pretty close to identifying the culprit, but obviously had no way of knowing that [[spoiler:time travel]] was involved.
** Completely averted with Charlotte, who, by the end of Season 1, [[spoiler:has managed to figure out the mystery all on her own, without any explicit help from the future]].

* RageAgainstTheHeavens: [[spoiler:Noah]]'s motivation essentially boils down to this: [[spoiler:By building a time machine of his own, he hopes to rewrite the laws of the universe, creating a world in which humans are no longer at the mercy of forces beyond their control]].

* SecretIdentity: [[spoiler:Aleksander]] is actually named [[spoiler:Boris Niewald]]. Why he hides his real identity remains unclear as of now, though it is hinted that he was involved in some illegal activities.

* TrappedInThePast: [[spoiler: Mikkel, who disappears from 2019, is stranded in 1986. He is adopted by Ines Kahnwald, is given the identity of 'Michael Kahnwald', and eventually marries Hannah and fathers Jonas.]]

* SanDimasTime: The three time periods - 1953, 1985, 2019 - exist in parallel. Time flows at the same rate in all periods, and its the same date and time at all ends of the portal, exactly 33 years (or in case of 1953 and 2019, 66 years) in the past or future. Justified by the premise that [[spoiler: the universe is exactly the same every 33 years in a cosmological sense, which is somehow related to how the portal works.]]

** [[spoiler: As of the end of Season 1, Ulrich is trapped in 1953 - though in his case, its not because he can't find his way back to 2019, but rather because he's been incarcerated as a murder suspect by the police of the era.]]

* GuiltRiddenAccomplice: [[spoiler:Helge]] clearly feels guilty about participating in [[spoiler:Noah]]'s crimes, but is so psychologically damaged that he's easily cowed into submission.
* HappilyMarried: Regina and Aleksander, which is pretty remarkable, considering how awful everyone else's relationships are.

* MrExposition: Tannhaus has a lengthy conversation with the Stranger that seems to exist solely to educate the viewer about Einstein's theories on time and the universe, as well as the possibility of [[spoiler:time travel via black holes]].
