* {{Crossover}}: With ''Series/EarlyEdition'' (characters from ''Chicago Hope'' appearing in an episode of ''Early Edition'') and ''Series/PicketFences'' (in both directions). Dr. Geiger appeared in a wordless cameo on an episode of ''Series/HomicideLifeOnTheStreet'', and the same episode showed the name of the hospital. While ''Series/{{ER}}'' never directly did a crossover, they took place in the same city, and evidently same universe, since many references to the fictional "County General" were made on this series, including directly referencing a plot from the other show; when Austin is considered for a "doctors in space" program, it's mentioned that a doctor from County is also being considered, which was true; Dr. Greene was approached on ''ER'' about the program but turned it down.

** In large part, the Season Five finale "Curing Cancer" was this, as it directly addressed, onscreen, the issues that had caused it to sink in ratings and critical response. The biggest issues critics and fans alike had was that without Mandy Patinkin, most of the cast was bland and unlikeable, and those that weren't still benefitted greatly from having Patinkin to react against. Christine Lahti's character, Dr. Kate Austin, who had replaced Patinkin's Dr. Geiger, was seen as a self-righteous MarySue, who spent each season getting less likeable. The solution? Bring Geiger back, now the hospital's CEO, have him fire all the characters fans didn't like, have a lawyer list out fan-provided reasons the characters should go, have multiple characters, but Geiger especially, comment on how the hospital has gone downhill since he left it and now needs him to set it back on course, etc. It didn't really work; viewership fell even further in the sixth and final season, and critics even said that Geiger's return had only heightened his DoctorJerk tendencies and he was now even less likeable than Kate Austin had become.

* BunnyEarsLawyer: Dr. Jeffrey Geiger. Briliant cardiac surgeoon, loyal friend, but unhinged because his mentally ill wife had drowned their infant son. Among his many eccentricities was a habit of locking himself in his office so that he could think procedures through -- without his slacks(he considered the 'swishing' sound of his pant legs touching as he paced distracting).
