Here are some suggestions for finding problematic tropers and reporting them to AskTheTropers (ATT), if necessary. These are meant to discourage tropers from cluttering the ATT with unnecessary commentary and non-issues, and making the job of moderators easier as well.

Note: We can't and won't enforce these as guidelines, this page is here only to help making reports more concise and clear.

* Rule breaking is not arguable, either it happened or it didn't. If you're reporting rule breaking, it doesn't matter which example is more correct. The problem should be addressed ''first'', ''then'' the editing can continue.
** If you're not reporting rule-breaking but you consider an edit problematic, [[Administrivia/RepairDontRespond just improve it]]. There are better places to resolve small disputes than ATT, like in Private Messages (PM) and forums. Consider ATT as the ''measure of last resort''.
* Don't comment in a report ''unless it involves you, or you can append'' or elaborate the report. Off-topic comments or discussions of troper's personality, without new evidence of a problem, are called [[Administrivia/TVTropesGlossary Popcorning]] and will annoy the mods.
** Getting angry, bringing up your own or someone else's personal flaws and poor grammar are quick signs that someone can't keep up a constructive conversation.
** Don't threaten other tropers with a ban or ask to ban specific tropers (Mini-modding). It is for mods to decide, ''no jurors needed''.
** If the troper goes haywire and starts vandalizing or throwing insults, '''don't engage'''. It's better to keep an eye on their edits and do a cleanup after they're being dealt with, than everyone jumping into Administrivia/EditWar against one non-disarmed troper.
* ''Don't PM the mods'' unless it's really urgent. Mods monitor the ATT and their forums of choice regularly when they get online, they will respond to reports if needed ''eventually''. If the query didn't get any development in over a day and the issue still persists, make a "Bump" comment to bring it to the top of the ATT.
** Don't comment on reports that have been resolved recently (Gravedancing) or a while ago (Necromancy). If a similar issue appears, ''make a new report'' and link the old one as reference.
** Don't ask to lock the query unless it's escalating into a FlameWar. If the issue is resolved, it should be obvious by looking at it, just let the query get buried in the queue.

* Name the new ATT query something like ''Edit War: page name'', or ''Possible Edit War: page name'' if you're unsure.

* Add any information that could be useful, like a troper's similar edits on other pages, or any correspondence you two had, if any.
* PM the troper by clicking the "Send Message" in the History page near their edit or at the troper's profile page. Invite them to a talk in the query involving them. Rarely, but it does happen, that they really haven't been paying attention to the edit history and have "considered it strange" that their example has disappeared. Note that Edit Wars are still rarely pardoned.

* Someone's edits being very similar to the edits of a troper who has been brought up in ATT before and was suspended. They may have registered under a new username to continue editing (Sockpuppeting). Even ''if they haven't broken other rules'', tropers under a suspension '''are not allowed to edit at all'''.
* A suspended troper directly asking someone else to edit or message on their behalf. Per [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=365rl6gt9w6vijv1envyi76j forum rules]], this is not allowed either, even outside of the forums. Tropes who are edit-banned but not forum-banned can still use appropriate forums to suggest edits, however.

* Check the forum and edit activities for both of the suspicious tropers. If the second one has been inactive until the first one got suspended, it's very likely to be a sockpuppet. On the other hand, if both accounts have been around for a while, the similarities are probably either coincidental or they have been be cooperating.
* '''Do not message suspected ban evaders. Do not ask them any questions.'''

* If the similarities are too glaring, then no further discussion is required. Just wait for the mod to perform the IP address check and make a decision.
* If the mod can't say anything decisive after the check, message the second troper with an invite to the ATT, so they can comment on why they have edits similar to the suspended troper's edits. If the correlation is not confirmed, if there are other problems with their edits, they can be addressed in private or in another query.
* If the mod suspends the second troper, ask on the [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=16091187550A68598200 Ban Evader Reversion Thread]] for the sockpuppet's edits to be undone. To reiterate, edits by ban evaders are ''reverted on principle'', regardless if there are other issues with them. The edits can be re-added after the discussion with the thread, if necessary.

* Multiple editors going back and forth with their edits on the same page, though not getting into a straight Administrivia/EditWar.

* If the page keeps attracting "heat", ask the [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=gsjp7dldjh2dwdelcha2hu17 Locked Pages]] thread to freeze the page, it could be getting the attention because of a trending topic.

* A Private Message that is insulting, overly snarky, or too personal.
* Same for edit reasons, forum posts and discussion posts. Note, that [[Administrivia/EditReasonsAndWhyYouShouldUseThem conversing in the edit reasons]] is not allowed by the either side.

* Ask the troper to stop and ask why they're doing it. If they apologize and don't do it again, then it's up to you if that's good enough. If they do continue to act rude, '''stop interacting with them'''.
* As per [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=365rl6gt9w6vijv1envyi76j forum rules]], ''sharing the contents of your PM is not allowed''. This applies to other parts of the website as well. The mods have a tool to see the messages of any troper, they can check them if necessary.
* Bring up the offending troper in ATT, summarize in a couple of words how rude their messages are and what actions preceded them.

* Read each article for the specifics.

* Check up on them some time later. If they continue to edit with improper English, they're just creating more mess to clean up. Make the ATT query with a title like "Poor Grammar: Tropername" and bring up the edits. Ask the troper in a PM to come to the thread, in case they wish to respond.

* Stub trope drafts, lacking description or examples.

* Encourage the troper to read the relevant Administrivia pages if you think their knowledge is lacking, and also ask them to elaborate their questions in the future if they weren't clear.

* Check the edit history of the troper who put a problematic image, they may have done so somewhere else as well.

* Removing large portions of text from pages without an approval or an edit reason.

* Use the "Report Page" button at the side bar, or bring the page up in the ATT while linking the relevant edits.

* [[Administrivia/RepairDontRespond Improve the edit]] if necessary, then send the Grammar notifier from the page's History by explaining why the spelling is wrong and also ask them to consult with the [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=b9tcd2k65789p1pglrd92nvr Help With English]] thread. Edit War / Rudeness routine may kick in depending on response.

** Images that are [[Administrivia/TheContentPolicyAndThe5PCircuit NSFW]], don't [[ThisImageIsNotAnExample fit the page]] ("Does Not Illustrate" / Administrivia/JustAFaceAndACaption / Rely on text too much), [[Sandbox/ArtifactsRUs hard to see]] or [[Administrivia/AboutImagesAndCopyright copyrighted]]. "Better than nothing" is not how things work.

* Bring up the page that has a violating image to the [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=1317986693061200100 IP]], prefebly bringing up who made the change and what was the old image, if there was one. This is ''not an ATT problem'', unless the troper systematically replaces images or adds bad images.
* Check the edit history for the troper who put a violating image, they may have done so somewhere else as well.
* Do nothing else. The mod will pull the images when they notice them.

* Removing large portions of text from pages without an approval or edit reason.
* Adding text with obviously false information, [[Administrivia/ConversationInTheMainPage personal comment]], [[Administrivia/TheContentPolicyAndThe5PCircuit lewd comment]], [[Administrivia/ComplainingAboutShowsYouDontLike complaining]], or [[Administrivia/FirstPersonWriting breaking the speech style]].
* Multiple editors going back and forth with edits on the same page without getting into straight Administrivia/EditWar.

* Use the "Report Page" button in the side bar or bring the page in ATT while bringing up relevant edits.
* ''Don't message tropes'' that are deliberataly harm pages.
* Check the edit history of the guilty parties for any other problems.
* If the page keeps getting "heat", ask the [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=gsjp7dldjh2dwdelcha2hu17 Lock Page]] thread to freeze the page, it may be getting outside attention because of a trending topic.
* Ask the [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13327578050A72722200 Complaining cleanup]] thread if there's anything else that should be removed.

* A private message that is insulting, overly snarky, or too personal.
* Ditto for edit reasons, forum posts and discussions. Note that [[Administrivia/EditReasonsAndWhyYouShouldUseThem coversing in edit reasons]] is not allowed by either side.

* Ask them the troper to stop and tell why. If they apologize and don't do it again, it's up to you if that's considered resolved. If they continue, '''stop interacting with them'''.
* As per [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=365rl6gt9w6vijv1envyi76j forum rules]], ''sharing the contents of your PM is not allowed'', this applies outside the forums as well. The mods have a tool to see messages of any user, they'll know what are you refering to.
* Bring up the offending troper in the ATT, summarize in a few words what's wrong, and what actions preceeded these messages.
* Create the query as private. Since it's a problem between two tropers, no peanut gallery is necessary.

* Read each article for specifics.

* [[Administrivia/RepairDontRespond Improve or remove the edit]], then use "Send Message" from the page history and use the appropriate notifier type.
* Depending on their reaction, the Edit War or Rudeness guidelines may kick in.
* Check after a few hours their edit history. If they still show no understanding of how to edit the pages, make an ATT with bringing up problematic edits and summon them to it. You may further explain how and how not to write examples until the mods arrive.
* Collaborate with appropriate cleanup threads to fix the pages if there's too much to edit.

* Page descriptions and examples that are copied from another website, even if the troper is that page's [[Administrivia/TheFicMayBeYoursButTheTropePageIsOurs fanfic owner]].
** Translations are a grey area, but if the troper is working with another language, they're more than capable of rephrasing the text.
* Refer to Reporting Images for copyrighted photos and comics that are "mostly borrowed" without permission.

* Comment out the text and put the URL of the page you've found it's taken from as edit reason.

* If they can't or won't do it, try working with the text yourself, and if you can't, ask [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=14727740310A09919300 Copypaste cleanup]] what to do with the text and with the troper.

* Systematically replacing one spelling with another when Administrivia/AmericanAndCommonwealthSpellings and Administrivia/BluenoseBowdlerizer say not to.

* [[Administrivia/RepairDontRespond Improve the edit]], then use "Send Message" from the page history by explaining why the spelling is wrong and also ask them to consult with [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=b9tcd2k65789p1pglrd92nvr Help With English]] thread. Edit War / Rudeness guidelines may kick in on response.
* Check on them some time later. If they continue to edit with bad English, a poorly spelt example is as bad as a wrong example, they're just creating more mess to clean up. Make an ATT with a title like "Poor Grammar: Tropername" and bring up edits with poor grammar. Ask the troper in PM to come to the thread in case they want to say something.

* Stub trope drafts (no description / examples).
* Not working with own drafts discussions / suggestions.

* Making a bad first draft is something expected. Politely bring up everything you can think of to improve the draft up to a standard. Get attention from / to [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=mrrv0lfphb29fvme6ofumrj0 TLP workstation]] for additional help.
* It's not recommended, but it's ''acceptable'' to use TLP to draft a Work page. Administrivia/WorksPagesAreAFreeLaunch does not mean "if TLP draft is a Work page, it should be launched / bombed right away". Please, let the troper read [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=15946606200A77250100 New Work Page Workshop]] and cooperate with them if you can.
* If a trope has launched (visible on the main page) when it had some lingering problems, or launched by someone who isn't the draft's current owner, [[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13544789560A75740100 bring it here]] for it to be sent back.
* When someone makes multiple "concept" drafts and doesn't work on them, they clutter the TLP queue. They, and their drafts, should be brought to ATT for a talk.

* Questions in ATT like "is that correct", "where can I find" or "does anyone know".

* [[Administrivia/TVTropesCustoms Don't be a smartass]], everyone was a newbie at some point.
* Post a link to the appropriate place.
* Don't answer the question if you can't come with the answer right away.
* Encourage the troper to read appropriate Administrivia pages if you think their knowledge is lacking, and also to elaborate their questions in the future if it didn't sound clear clear.

Here are the suggestions for finding and reporting problematic tropers to AskTheTropers (ATT). These are meant to discourage tropers from cluttering the ATT with unnecessary commentary and non-issues, as well as making the job of moderators easier.

Note: We can't and won't enforce these as guidelines, it's only to help making reports more concise and clear.

* Rule-breaking is not arguable, it either did happen or didn't. If you're reporting rulebreaking, it doesn't matter who's example is more correct. The problem should be addressed ''first'', ''then'' the editing can continue.
** If you're not reporting rulebreaking, but you consider an edit problematic, [[Administrivia/RepairDontRespond improve it]]. And there are better places to resolve disputes, like in Private Messages (PM) and forums. Consider AAT as a ''last-resort measure''.
* Don't comment to reports ''unless it involves you or you can append'' or elaborate the report. Off-topic comments or discussions of troper's personality without new evidence of a problem is called [[Administrivia/TVTropesGlossary Popcorning]] and will annoy the mods.
** Getting angry, coming up with own or someone else's personal flaws and poor grammar are quick signs that someone can't keep a constructive conversation.
** Don't threaten other tropers with a ban or ask to ban specific tropers (Minimodding). It's for mods to decide, ''no jurors''.
** If the troper goess heywire and starts vandalizing or throwing insults, '''don't engage'''. It's better to keep track on their edits and do cleanup after they're being dealt with, then everyone jumping in Administrivia/EditWar against one non-disarmed troper.
* ''Don't PM the mods'' unless it's really urgent. Mods monitor the ATT and their forums of choice as part of their duties when they get online, they will respond to reports if needed ''eventually''. If the query didn't get a development in over a day and the issue persists, make a "Bump" comment to bring it to the top of ATT.
** Don't comment to reports that were resolved recently (Gravedancing) or a while ago (Necromancy). If a similar issue appears, ''make a new report'' and link the old one for reference.
** Don't ask to lock the thread unless it's developing into a FlameWar. If the issue is resolved, it will be obvious by looking, just let the query get buried in the queue.
* SingleIssueWonk in ATT refers to tropers who have a noticeable pattern to their edits, like mass-editing pages with a specific topic. "Agenda-Based Troper" is a variant of that, who ignores Administrivia/RuleOfCautiousEditingJudgment and think their [[PoliticalCorrectnessGoneMad opinion]] on a controversial topic is [[Administrivia/RightingGreatWrongs more valuable]] than what the pages had. Talking to these people is '''generally considered pointless''', as they clearly have a certain intent to not follow common decency.

* Addressing the troper: ''[=Tropers/{{TroperUsername}}=]''. If you are in a forum, ''[=@Tropers/{{TroperUsername}}=]'' (Paging) will create a PM for them to check the post they're mentioned on. Paging does not work in ATT due to a bug.
** Do note, however, that certain usernames that begin with a number or have an underscore (_) cannot be linked properly. This is due to a bug that doesn't support those characters and breaks the linking functionality, leading to dead links. If the troper you want to report has a username like that, request a mod for assistance in citing their editing and posting history.
* Bringing up troper's edit history: ''[=[[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/el.php?findfor=TroperUsername TroperUsername's Edit History]]=]''.
* Bringing up specific edits: From the page's History tab, navigate to the edit and copy the link from the timestamp at the top-right corner of the post. Note, if the edit is not recent, using the link won't show it as it's hidden by the Show All button. Append "&more=t" after the pagename, ex: ''[=[[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/article_history.php?article=Administrivia.TropesNeedingTRS&more=t#edit30413004]]=]''.
* Bringing up troper's forum activity: ''[=[[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/forum_troper_posts.php?fortroper=TroperUsername]]=]'' (can be useful to check if they were invited to Suspension Appeal before).
* Bringing up a forum post: copy the link from the timestamp to the right of the post, or click on it and copy the URL, ex: ''[=[[https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13327578050A72722200&page=3#comment-54]]=]''
* Bringing up troper's page discussion activity: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/comment_activity.php?t=TroperUsername
